i watched the other ones, i love how they're able to function as a tight band w/no rehearsal because they all have that common vocabulary of Prince's stage cues ("on the 1" = stop, then come back with "good god!" where "god" always falls on beat 3, etc). i mean i know it all comes from james brown, but it's really specific Prince shit.

this is quite good from what ive heard so far, even if it could have been recorded in 2001 (not that i dislike it, but it just seems a bit of a shame, hes still playing the same old rap instrumentals, pretty much the same old covers he was doing in 96... why?!), rather than march of this year. i dont have much faith in his comeback really yielding anything that amazing at this point. and it seems kinda fucked up that bilal is still releasing good records, and actually has a strong identity of his own, while were all still waiting for dangelo to make the album we all thought he could make...
― StillAdvance, Wednesday, 2 October 2013 08:06 (eleven years ago)
actually, this is pretty great (even if it is covers). from the 57 min mark, its pretty special. and just makes me more frustrated at his general lack of output. argh.

he's doing a poor job of shaming dangelo in that case (i dont think he is doing that in any case, i think hes too aware of dangelo's mental fragility, he doesnt want to upset things too much, beyond airing some frustration and playful digs about his career inertia - dangelo wont let the new record be heard until hes laboured it to death most likely)

Billboard a week ago:
In March of 2013, Liles told Billboard, "We're trying to finish the album. Right now we have 13 songs done, trying to think about the sequence of the album, mastering and mixing within the next two weeks, and release the thing. Ain't no question it's coming."Judging by that tectonic pace, the album actually should be just about approximately almost 100 percent done right about now. Here's what Liles said:"Here's the thing: with D'Angelo it was a process. He didn't perform for 10 years and he's been working on an album for the past 12 years. I actually got him to go out and do 30 shows (in 2011-2012), and then we did some 'Brothers in Arms' shows. I said, 'We have to get motivated around what people want to hear from you, and what does it mean to come back to that space?' He very bluntly put it, 'Kev, the studio and the stage: that's my lifeblood. Now that I've touched it again, now that I see it again, I wanna be sure that the baby I'm about to have -- the album -- that I take it to the point where it's all it can be.'"There'll be an album this year: there's 14 records so far, we might have a couple of bonus records, but all the recording is basically done and we're mixing and mastering now. Definitely, he'll be back.

Claiming he has 14 records ready to go sort of undercuts even the modest claim that he even has one record ready to go.

comparing drugs to women is always corny and problematic but i don't see what makes it that much worse than the rest of the album
― Left, Saturday, 22 May 2021 20:18 (four years ago)
Not much worse, just that the best songs on there are better. Its melodically weak too. Instrumental is good though. Good to vibe to.
Back to black messiah though. Not to get all stevehoffman, but i I bought it on vinyl thinking that would be the perfect format but the CD seems to handle it better, esp 1000 deaths.
― candyman, Saturday, 22 May 2021 20:58 (four years ago)
categorically disagree that the melody for brown sugar is weak. rhythm is as important to a melody as range and variation
― the mai tai quinn (voodoo chili), Saturday, 22 May 2021 21:01 (four years ago)
it’s definitely true that d’s melodies grew much more complex by the time black messiah came around, hard to imagine “another life” appearing on either of the first two albums
― the mai tai quinn (voodoo chili), Saturday, 22 May 2021 21:02 (four years ago)
does the organ/falsetto hook on BS count as part of the melody? i could listen to that all day
― Left, Saturday, 22 May 2021 21:06 (four years ago)
The hook is good, thats true, I was thinking of the verses.
"categorically disagree that the melody for brown sugar is weak. rhythm is as important to a melody as range and variation"
Thanks for your input. However I didn't comment on the rhythm, I commented on the tunefulness, specifically the verses. To compare to another rnb weed song, its hardly Mary Jane by Rick james.

Seriously can't believe the lack of mentions for Voodoo when discussing D'Angelo's finest piece. It captured something culturally as well as musically which I don't think the others did in the same way. It's his defining statement in my opinion.

"riot going on" vs "stand" as "intro funk album" is such a fine line
cuz "riot going on" is better as an album but it's just_exceptional_
the sly stone story is so sad because it's true
he hasn't _lost_ anything, it's all _there_
he just can't get to it reliably, it's buried under all this other awful shit
the drugs and trauma and shit
breaks my fucking heart
cuz whereas with brian wilson, i mean
maybe this is harsh, but it's what people say, that there just wasn't much of him left, that there was maybe 10% of him left by the '80s
but with sly, i don't get the sense that he's lost a damn thing

i was at this show, it was very special. they did do some d'angelo songs at the end, not sure if they're in this recording. i definitely remember them doing "lady." my other lasting memory is questlove imploring the crowd to cheer loudly to convince d'angelo to release a new album, saying that if we cheered really loud it might convince him, in that distinct tone of voice one has when they're saying something that sounds like it's a joke but really isn't
― slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 17 October 2024 22:17 (ten months ago)

― Jordan s/t (Jordan), Thursday, 17 October 2024 23:42 (ten months ago)
i'm sure i've said this already in this thread, but at the listening event where they first played this album, nelson george (who was emceeing) said that, essentially, he and questlove had to wrest control of the album from d'angelo once they were able to get it to a certain level of completeness, bcuz if they didn't do that then he probably would've have just been happy recording forever w/o ever releasing anything
