"Julie & Candy" for me- it feels like it hits the right balance between melody ("Dawn Chorus") and overt menace ("1969").

1969 by a mile.

Naive Teen Idol, Tuesday, 23 April 2013 03:21 (twelve years ago)

1969 was my favorite but I haven't listened to this album in a very long while. I love how when "you could feel the sky" comes in, it's like swimming in the sea at sunset after iceclimbing all day in blinding sunlight http://www.sherv.net/cm/emo/smoke/toke.gif

all the interludes on this really kill the flow.

I have no idea what any of the songs on this are named

Yeah tough poll. One of those albums I've listened to a lot and still feel as though I haven't even scraped the surface of. It's sequenced in a really weird way - I'm not all that sure how it ends, it kind of just peters out and then there's several minutes of silence.

my shortlist is 1969, beach at redpoint and music is math. so creepy!

of the short interludes, i think i like dandelion the best

the late great, Tuesday, 23 April 2013 19:30 (twelve years ago)

is this the beach at redpoint?

gyroscope

good album to listen to on a cd walkman in 2002 walking around squinting in the sunshine thinking about greenhouses. considered the beach at redpoint, dawn chorus, music is math, sunshine recorder, but voting dandelion

ogmor, Wednesday, 24 April 2013 00:06 (twelve years ago)

Shit voted music is math but should've voted gyroscope. The best warp tribute to My Bloody Valentine so far.

Moka, Wednesday, 24 April 2013 00:33 (twelve years ago)

Tempted to go with The Devil is in the Details, such a dark avant-hauntological ghost of a track amidst the yellowed polaroid tracks (which I also love)

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 24 April 2013 01:23 (twelve years ago)

all the interludes on this really kill the flow.

^^ some days, the interludes are everything i need to hear from them - devil is in the details, innit? the homemade comp i made comprised of them is probably the thing i heard most from boc...

considering them apart for a number of reasons, i'll probably go for either 'music is math' or '1969', i guess...

Shit voted music is math but should've voted gyroscope. The best warp tribute to My Bloody Valentine so far.

^^ wouldn't that be 'corsair'? or even 'dawn chorus'?

rusty_allen, Wednesday, 24 April 2013 02:34 (twelve years ago)

dawn chorus is v mbv

the late great, Wednesday, 24 April 2013 02:43 (twelve years ago)

Went back and listened to this album and there are surprisingly few standouts, the best of the best Boards of Canada ends up on the EPs I think.

B-Boy Bualadh Bos (ecuador_with_a_c), Wednesday, 24 April 2013 06:44 (twelve years ago)

The eps amd music has the right to children are way better than geogaddi.

Its still a BOC album, though, which is better than nothing.

Moka, Wednesday, 24 April 2013 06:51 (twelve years ago)

Xxpost oh shit, yes dawn chorus is the one. I keep mixing up the songs on this one.

Moka, Wednesday, 24 April 2013 06:54 (twelve years ago)

I have a friend who loved making erratic analogies between BoC and life itself. He said that Music Has the Right, per example, evoked the innocence and curiosity of childhood, whereas Geogaddi was a much darker, confusing ordeal that could be related to puberty. Campfire Headphase would then be young adulthood, more serene and sober.

It doesnt make much sense, perhaps but, One thing's true about his theory, at least for me, though. MHTRTC makes me all giddy and nostalgic when I listen to it but I cant listen to certain Geogaddi tracks when I'm all by myself at night because they freak me out. There's something disorienting about this album.

Moka, Wednesday, 24 April 2013 07:08 (twelve years ago)

Too many commas. I apologize Im writing from a phone and its annoying.

Moka, Wednesday, 24 April 2013 07:09 (twelve years ago)

interesting analogy, tho fwiw my young adulthood has been neither serene nor sober.

i push more weight than giles corey (Pillbox), Wednesday, 24 April 2013 07:13 (twelve years ago)

Song for song maybe MHTRTC is better, but Geogaddi's got that vibe

pssstttt, Hey you (dog latin), Wednesday, 24 April 2013 07:17 (twelve years ago)

Seeing the listing reminded me how much I still love this album, got to put it back on my player for morning walks. Comes down to 1969, YCFTS, Alpha & Omega but I think Music is Math just edges it for me - the main melody line using that ghostly choral voice never gets old.

In full support of all the interludes and snippets on this too, crucial to that vibe you mention, dog latin. Can't remember which review it was but recall a terrific description of Opening the Mouth as being like "a heavy breathing call from a banshee".

BoC are still my favourite electronic musicians by some distance, more excited for the new one than anything else this year.

that mustardless plate (Bill A), Wednesday, 24 April 2013 07:25 (twelve years ago)

Well i meant compared to puberty and childhood when you get a free pass from everyone when doing crazy, irresponsible things.

Moka, Wednesday, 24 April 2013 07:27 (twelve years ago)

wow never thought Music is Math (for which I voted) would be so popular. I thought 1969 would be the pretty obvious winner
Anyway like people have already said, this is the kind of album where picking winners is a bit besides the point. Any of the In a Beautiful Place track would prob win this poll, yet Geodaddi just seems bound to remain this thing, their masterwork.

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Wednesday, 24 April 2013 13:12 (twelve years ago)

of the main tracks probably Alpha & Omega but i realize i prefer the "interludes" tho I don't think of them as interludes exactly. Anyway that would make it Dandelion

suare, Wednesday, 24 April 2013 13:27 (twelve years ago)

Alpha & Omega makes me wish I could muster the time, skills and effort to make a YT clip for it exclusively using footage from Logan's Run.

that mustardless plate (Bill A), Wednesday, 24 April 2013 15:12 (twelve years ago)

julie & candy.....but i almost voted for a is to b as b is to c, for being one of the most genuinely disturbing pieces they've done...

yellow jacket (spazzmatazz), Wednesday, 24 April 2013 15:35 (twelve years ago)

oh no, another unsearchable thread title

WilliamC, Wednesday, 24 April 2013 15:37 (twelve years ago)

this is easily their best record. easily

always thought of 'julie & candy' as the heart of it

'you could feel the sky' never not awesome though. just what is that sound

r|t|c, Wednesday, 24 April 2013 15:39 (twelve years ago)

'Julie & Candy' was my favourite when this first came out but I'm going to have to relisten the whole thing before I vote, I can't remember which songs are which in the second half.

'In the Annexe' is the creepiest track I think.

Gavin, Leeds, Wednesday, 24 April 2013 15:46 (twelve years ago)

this is easily their best record

we're up all night to get picky (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 24 April 2013 16:14 (twelve years ago)

Was thinking of voting Sunshine Recorder but went with Music Is Math in the end. For a moment I seriously considered choosing Ready Let's Go, never tire of hearing that little intro. Geogaddi definitely has a "spooky" vibe to it, which I found off-putting at first, but the album does reward repeated listenings.

agnosy, Wednesday, 24 April 2013 19:00 (twelve years ago)

difficult, that album underwhelmed me when it came out. i had discovered boc just before via ilm. but this was not as magic as music has the right or some of the eps. they seem to be on autopilot. music is math is a strong contender but it is by no means a truly great song.

it's the distortion, stupid! (alex in mainhattan), Wednesday, 24 April 2013 19:27 (twelve years ago)

beach at redpoint, which i am voting for

the late great, Wednesday, 24 April 2013 19:54 (twelve years ago)

'you could feel the sky' never not awesome though. just what is that sound

MES: In this album, there’s a beat that really satisfies us, the one on “you could feel the sky”, that sounds like someone stretching a rope over the surface of a wooden ship”

I always thought it was a chainsaw about to fell a tree in a boreal forest at twilight in an Arctic summer, but that's just me.

yellow jacket (spazzmatazz), Wednesday, 24 April 2013 20:30 (twelve years ago)

i've always found Gyroscope beguilingly creeeeepy - it is the sound of a nightmare you might actually be enjoying & not want to wake from. Recently, it was employed appropriately as background music in the horror film Sinister (not that the movie itself was that great, but that aspect of it was).

true, but imo DC is at the very top of the heap (along w/ maybe a few early M83 tracks & some Kompact stuff) of the early-00s electronic nu-MBV thing - definitely superior to what Shields himself turned in for the Lost in Translation soundtrack.

third time of listening to this since the poll and i'm starting to appreciate it more than i did at the time. fuck the interludes still though.

Elvis was a hero to most but he never her (ledge), Thursday, 25 April 2013 14:24 (twelve years ago)

This is way better than Music Has The Right To Children, which had the edge on beats, but Geogaddi is way out in front on melodies and overall ambiance.

Matt DC, Thursday, 25 April 2013 14:26 (twelve years ago)

The Beach at Redpoint still does it for me, always thought it sounded like some soundtrack from Twin Peaks or a Micheal Mann movie. Really powerful track.

Jason Dowd, Thursday, 25 April 2013 14:38 (twelve years ago)

voting alpha and omega because wtf is that snare/gasp sound every few bars in the second half.

Best bit in Alpha and Omega is the vocodered voice that pops up and goes 'YELLOW' out of nowhere.
