i think it's a good track, in an "experimental" XTC kinda way, except for the child singing in the beginning.

x2. quite a comeback from that snoozer of a song they released before.
― mizzell, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 20:44 (twelve years ago)
They wasted all the hooks they had on them on their debut, huh?
― Moka, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 21:01 (twelve years ago)
i enjoyed that.

― mark e, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 21:39 (twelve years ago)
I wonder if that's the best song on the album or if they're holding something back.

― More Than a Century With the Polaris Emblem (calstars), Monday, 16 September 2013 19:18 (eleven years ago)
Not sure what to make of this new one. I ended up really loving the last album but apart from a few interesting moments this didn't really leave much of an impression.
― Kitchen Person, Monday, 16 September 2013 19:31 (eleven years ago)
This is a terrible, repulsive album.

How did you rate the first album?

This is an act that has never had any clue about what they want to sound like.

First one didn't make much of an impression on me... totally loved 'Congratulations'... find this one pretty rotten so far (though I do like "YLIAL").
I'm thinkin it's the Fridmann factor. Dude is the indie T-Bone Burnett. Blech.
― mr.raffles, Monday, 16 September 2013 19:55 (eleven years ago)
Liked the three singles on the first album, ended up loving Congratulations and enjoying it way more than the debut. Not sure I'll play this one again.

the album is so squashed/compressed/blown out! I know that sounds like a contradiction in terms but, it's WAY overloaded, not like Congrats where it was really nicely blended and warm, this is like, earbud distortion-wave
― i also enjoy in line skateing (spazzmatazz), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 14:42 (eleven years ago)
still needs more listens, but so far Your Life is a Lie is the one great song on here
But yeah, MGMT don't deserve the sort of indie Bieber-esque circlejerk of hate they get. Bc you hate their fans, their early singles? Not exactly unique, good bands having shitty fans and overexposed, burnt out singles/flukes.....Congratulations is a fantastic album
― i also enjoy in line skateing (spazzmatazz), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 14:50 (eleven years ago)
Writing a song so Frank Ocean can sample its hook is their most lasting contribution.
― first I think it's time I kick a little verse! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 14:51 (eleven years ago)
when I said upthread that I couldn't get through more than 15 seconds of any given MGMT song I've heard, I was 100% serious
― WHAT DOES SAMANTHA FOX SAY (DJP), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 15:00 (eleven years ago)
I've managed to not be around many IRL people who've even heard of them, let alone listens to them incessantly, so I have no real exposure to their fanbase. I just wholly detest their music.
― WHAT DOES SAMANTHA FOX SAY (DJP), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 15:01 (eleven years ago)
in what ways?
― i also enjoy in line skateing (spazzmatazz), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 15:04 (eleven years ago)
I thought I liked the first album but the other day I heard Pieces of What in a pub and wondered what that awful music was until I googled the lyrics. So, like most people, I guess I really just liked the hits.
― Deafening silence (DL), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 15:15 (eleven years ago)
It's all about the first half of that album. I still get quite nostalgic for 2008 when I hear bits from it.
― Pingu Unchained (dog latin), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 15:20 (eleven years ago)
Every snippet I've heard (and snippets are all I've heard because, as I stated, I've turned them off after 15 seconds) has been viscerally unpleasant to listen to. The instruments sound like they are actively working against each other, often exacerbated by the most unpleasant, grating synth noises possible used as if they were melodic leads on rhythmically lifeless songs, and the bits of singing I've heard is unforgivably wimpy, breathy, lifeless and aggressively out of tune. There is absolutely nothing here that I consider to be of value, from song construction up through execution. They are one of the worst bands I've ever encountered.
― WHAT DOES SAMANTHA FOX SAY (DJP), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 15:21 (eleven years ago)
It's the singing that kills me.
― first I think it's time I kick a little verse! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 15:22 (eleven years ago)
Actually let me walk that back a little bit; in the hands of a more competent songwriter/arranger, the synth patches could be great. I love a lot of music with discordant and/or detuned noises in them. Very little of it is trying to be jaunty-sounding pop songs.
― WHAT DOES SAMANTHA FOX SAY (DJP), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 15:24 (eleven years ago)
It all sounds like amateurs digging Primal Scream and AnCo without having a clue.
― first I think it's time I kick a little verse! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 15:25 (eleven years ago)
this new album is very interesting, have only heard these guys peripherally before (only saw their videos, which rip off films that I like very much). will have to check out the earlier albums.
I would completely understand why someone would find their pretenses unlistenably annoying (especially the voice), and yes you can hear how hard they're trying at times, but I wouldn't exactly say amateurish. I hear much more of a Zombies / Pretty Things / Incredible String Band homage on the songwriting structure front than anything contemporary.
― Milton Parker, Tuesday, 17 September 2013 18:17 (eleven years ago)
i don't mind some of their recorded stuff - but they were one of the hands down worst live acts i'd ever seen.
― Porto for Pyros (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 18:50 (eleven years ago)
I don't know the first album that well (other than the singles), but Congratulations sounds nothing like Prml Scrm or AnCo.
The new one is unlistenable (cept for 'Your Life..." - that's a decent tune).
― mr.raffles, Tuesday, 17 September 2013 21:21 (eleven years ago)
I'm giving this a listen this morning. I really liked the first album and I loved the second album but the new songs I've heard (mainly "Alien Days" and "Your Life") haven't left much of an impression. I like them alot, I like the vocals, the melodies, etc. The second album I felt was really great but I thought the first was just about as good as it and the whole "oh they are too weird to like the first album" stuff was distracting and dumb. But most of that is probably out of their control, I'm sure they get asked constantly about their big hits, they were probably sick of them before the first album was even out.
Kind of puzzled about "Your Life is a Lie" being everyone's favorite. It's barely a song.

it's an ok release. nothing hugely special but very likeable. weirdly, i was listening to a lot of early split enz just before hearing this and they seem quite similar.

― PaulTMA, Sunday, 22 September 2013 20:32 (eleven years ago)
I listened to it again on Sunday, which was a nice fall day, while taking the train out of see my family. Again, I can't remember much aside from a few tracks ("Alien Days" is really growing on me, "Your Life is a Lie" too, though maybe cos it stands out so sharply amidst everything else). Anyways yeah "Congratulations" had a very guitar and rock-oriented thing going for it, whereas here it is much more about the keys. Feels as if some of these songs were improvized in the studio. Lay down a drum loop put down a chord progression w some synth pads go write some lyrics, whisper/sing them on top, etc. Whereas the last album felt more like they were song that had been rehearsed and performed live.
After listening to this I switched to Simon & Garfunkle's "Bookends" and it was kind of striking how much "Save the Life of My Child" had in common w MGMT. Though way more catchy and schizophrenic.
