"The Fall, having a communal sauna, yesterday"

Thanks to all for the considered ballots supplied, in all there were 36 supplied ballots, of which 29 also listed their top ten albums (or less)

In this thread, we roll-out the Top Twenty Albums. (The tracks should roll out on Monday, all things being good.)

The bona-fide albums (i.e. not compilations) that got no votes...

yeah, I think I held off on Peel box out of ill-formed principle (voted for one comp though) - it'd be top 3 for me otherwise, possibly number 1

woof, Thursday, 25 April 2013 11:33 (twelve years ago)

It deserves its place, I reckons: There are a lot of 'definitive versions' of certain tracks, but the vast majority are better on the source albums/whatever..

Levitate and YFOC too low!

I understand that little group of zero-vote-getters. But something that surprised me in my crossing and re crossing of the fall body since I voted was how much my enjoyment of Reformation has gone up. When it was new I found it useless, a failure to capture the weird wind tunnel sound of the American lineup. Now I'm not so sure.

Heads Roll indisputably one of the weakest, which is interesting when you consider it's Peel session is one of the two or three finest they ever did.

brad palsy (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 25 April 2013 12:44 (twelve years ago)

I was the Levitate numbernone, and YFOC was I think my number 5. Levitate is a new dimension of recorded art that nobody else will ever stumble into

tsarnaev paleface (imago), Thursday, 25 April 2013 13:12 (twelve years ago)

number ONE, wdve voted it 0 given the option

tsarnaev paleface (imago), Thursday, 25 April 2013 13:13 (twelve years ago)

Well, I got a promo of Fall Heads Roll, and the thing about it is: It is what the fall do well. But without diversion, and it's often the diversions that make it.

I did give "are" a listen via Spotify, and I could have quite easily have added it to the favourites list, but wasn't there some sort of problem with the sound quality originally? The tracks I heard were all fine.

Mark G, Thursday, 25 April 2013 13:45 (twelve years ago)

YFOC being above Levitate (& presumably Imperiak Wax Solvent) is straight up b.s.

Also, Missing Winner getting no votes makes me sad does this mean 2G+2 got votes?

pink lady lemoncankles (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 25 April 2013 13:50 (twelve years ago)

It means that 2G+2 is not on the list of "actual Fall Albums" as per the excellent http://www.visi.com/fall/discog/singlesalbums.html

There are many "Live albums" and "Compilation Albums" that got no votes..

Mark G, Thursday, 25 April 2013 13:53 (twelve years ago)

Even more glad In a Hole made it then :D maybe one of my favorite live albums for all sorts of reasons

pink lady lemoncankles (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 25 April 2013 14:00 (twelve years ago)

frenz experiment and i am kurious oranj way too fucking low

i like a lot of the 90s and 00s, stuff, but little of it comes close to the weird pop corner they'd battered themselves into c 88

Mark G, Thursday, 25 April 2013 14:09 (twelve years ago)

i like fall heads roll more than most, but yeah - if you take away "blindness" and the wonderful move cover, there isn't much left

his army of super young artists produce, (contenderizer), Thursday, 25 April 2013 14:11 (twelve years ago)

I will probably whinge and cry when Witch Y
Trials places three spots above Dragnet

pink lady lemoncankles (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 25 April 2013 15:00 (twelve years ago)

Superfluous Y there, but Pop Group is a great band too

Dragnet will beat Witch Trials.

Excited for this! Have adopted old DN in tribute.

Flat Of NAGLs (sleeve), Thursday, 25 April 2013 15:36 (twelve years ago)

I didn't vote for the albums because i only know about 5 albums really well, and one of those is a comp (the rough trade comp). listening to Levitate now. Can't wait for the songs countdown!

you're going home in a crispy ambulance (cajunsunday), Thursday, 25 April 2013 16:33 (twelve years ago)

Flat of NAGLs is an all time fave dn

pink lady lemoncankles (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 25 April 2013 17:37 (twelve years ago)

-In the same boat as Gerald and woof re: the Peel box.

-V. glad at the placement of Infotainment Scan - possibly the most light-hearted Fall album, and one of the few that I tend to listen to front-to-back.

-Seriously surprised by Imperial Wax Solvent being so high!

bentelec, Thursday, 25 April 2013 19:49 (twelve years ago)

you mean YFOC? I love that record! and Infotainment Scan is really solid. not a big Kurious Oranj or RTL fan, I would have subbed in Extricate and maybe Bend Sinister.

top ten - well, we have Witch Trials, Dragnet, Grotesque, Slates, Hex, PBL, TWAFWOTF, and TNSG. that leaves two surprises by my count, maybe the ones I mentioned? Shift-Work is more likely imo.

Flat Of NAGLs (sleeve), Thursday, 25 April 2013 19:58 (twelve years ago)

bend sinister maybe

contenderizer, Thursday, 25 April 2013 20:31 (twelve years ago)

And so Frenz remains criminally underrated. Tossers.

Kent Burt, Thursday, 25 April 2013 20:57 (twelve years ago)

^

contenderizer, Thursday, 25 April 2013 20:59 (twelve years ago)

you mean YFOC? I love that record!

I do too! I was reading too fast and thought that anything that had votes was in the countdown, and thus IWS was still to come. Nice record but not expecting it in the top 10 (and not heartbroken it missed the top 20).

bentelec, Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:09 (twelve years ago)

So is code: selfish not a possible top 10? I came to really like it as just accessible pop when I went through the Fall albums last year. Not sure how it's rated by others...

dlp9001, Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:20 (twelve years ago)

I would put code:selfish as the best 'madchester fall' record, ahead of shift work and infotainment scan. Had I listened to it the day before submitting my ballot instead of 2 days after, I think I would have had it in my top 10.

brad palsy (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:55 (twelve years ago)

is it really bad & wrong of me that I basically ignore everything between bend sinister and the light user syndrome except a few peel trax (chicago now, aussies in urp) and bonkers in phoenix? ok, and understanding that the answer is 'yes u idiot', where to really start GIVEN THAT my tastes usually skew 'weird Fall' or at least 'deranged Fall'

tsarnaev paleface (imago), Thursday, 25 April 2013 22:10 (twelve years ago)

u need Seminal Live and Extricate at the very least!

Flat Of NAGLs (sleeve), Thursday, 25 April 2013 22:16 (twelve years ago)

and "Haf Found Bormann"!

Flat Of NAGLs (sleeve), Thursday, 25 April 2013 22:17 (twelve years ago)

ok...

tsarnaev paleface (imago), Thursday, 25 April 2013 22:19 (twelve years ago)

even more guilty confession: have been relatively unable to get into the pre-Hex stuff, although this will happen more by osmosis and maturity than brute willpower

tsarnaev paleface (imago), Thursday, 25 April 2013 22:20 (twelve years ago)

yeah extricate is probably the strongest in that run. seminal live isn't that good - the definition of contractual obligation album.

sleepingsignal, Thursday, 25 April 2013 22:34 (twelve years ago)

true, but it has some pretty weird stuff on it like "Mollusk In Tyrol" that I think Mr. imago would dig.

Flat Of NAGLs (sleeve), Thursday, 25 April 2013 22:35 (twelve years ago)

yeah mollusc is good and weird. first time i saw them, in 90, that was played really loud right before they came out.

Mark G, Friday, 26 April 2013 12:04 (twelve years ago)

I was sure Hex would walk this, but Slates a deserved winner; no flab, no filler, just six concentrated and extraordinary songs that still sound revolutionary. Ten inches of joy. V skinny rats indeed.

Dr X O'Skeleton, Friday, 26 April 2013 12:12 (twelve years ago)

feel like In: Palace of Swords Reversed is the way to go if you want an expanded vision of Slates era but i don't know what the rules were so

we're up all night to get picky (Noodle Vague), Friday, 26 April 2013 12:14 (twelve years ago)

Hex perhaps suffering from the usual thing of everyone assuming that everyone else will vote for it, leading to many voters plumping instead for their ‘other’ favourites and putting the obvious choice lower down to try and keep things even. I was guilty of this, I have to say. I do love PBL, but I think Hex is the one I listen to most frequently and thoroughly.

Oopz. Ahem, looks like a slip of t'finger totalliser.

Anyway, I have just re-added from the ballots for Frenz Experiment..

OK, Frenz experiment moves up from position 18 to position 12, with eight votes:

234 The Frenz Experiment 8 1

Mark G, Friday, 26 April 2013 13:24 (twelve years ago)

so your Frenz added up to more than one hand

we're up all night to get picky (Noodle Vague), Friday, 26 April 2013 13:25 (twelve years ago)

I revisited Slates after voting and wished I'd had it higher up in my Top 10 so I'm glad it didn't lose out... #1 for me was a close call between PBL and Grotesque.

Gavin, Leeds, Friday, 26 April 2013 14:08 (twelve years ago)

okay, that makes more sense to me. was disappointed to see frenz and curious huddled together for warmth at the bottom of the rollout.

Hex also suffered from Slates being a way better album. ;)

Number Three reporting for duty. Slates is indisputably classic, one of the peak experiences of the UK post punk pantheon, and a crown jewel in the lineage of musical statements of intent in EP format. The only record review I've ever left on amazon.com was for Slates, some ten or eleven years ago. The 10" strengthened me like blood strengthened Audrey II, energizing me into a vicious beast bent on conquering the planet. Definitely a personal touchstone, it made so much other music sound like a joke at the time I first became obsessed.

3. This Nation's
4. Slates
5. Code
6. Wonderful

...and then I would have just been picking stuff based on my mood.

rubbish?

how so, sir?

mr.raffles, Sunday, 28 April 2013 02:38 (twelve years ago)

I'm not sure how that's possible, Doran, as the 3 preview tracks on the RSD single sounded pretty good to me.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Sunday, 28 April 2013 03:15 (twelve years ago)

I wouldn't be surprised, the last album was one of the worst things they've ever put out.

Kitchen Person, Sunday, 28 April 2013 03:25 (twelve years ago)

It's embarrassing. I get the feeling there's now only about a window of one hour in the day where you can get him to do stuff before he's too clattered. My sources up in Manchester say he's properly not well now also. Him being totally fucking drunk all the time I can just about handle but the band are just awful now. The worst plodders. Just shit, and I don't mind Cerebral Caustic either. For all their faults at least Domino stood up to him and sent the album back... no one should have put this out. I've only listened to it twice so maybe it'll bed in like many others have but at the moment I hate it. You know, obviously he's made his bed with drinking himself to death and it is easy enough to rationalise this course of action to yourself if you like a drink or two but it would be bad if this was the last Fall album.

Dark days my friends.

Doran, Sunday, 28 April 2013 07:31 (twelve years ago)

How did you rate Ersatz GB? Is the new one worse than that?

Kitchen Person, Sunday, 28 April 2013 07:45 (twelve years ago)

Came here to post my ballot, but obviously the herald angels have sung a foul tune, so I'll cross it out

Levitate
The Unutterable
Hex Enduction Hour
Perverted By Language
Your Future Our Clutter
Bend Sinister
The Marshall Suite
Imperial Wax Solvent
This Nation's Saving Grace
The Light User Syndrome

Comfort be unto he in his time of decline

tsarnaev paleface (imago), Sunday, 28 April 2013 08:28 (twelve years ago)

In my opinion after two listens it's much worse than EGB.

Doran, Sunday, 28 April 2013 08:53 (twelve years ago)

Let not the misfortune of crows beholden to thy sly grimace, oh imago - we are all but dredgers in the craven land of time.

Hinklepicker, Sunday, 28 April 2013 10:21 (twelve years ago)

That's easy for you to say.

Doran, Sunday, 28 April 2013 10:22 (twelve years ago)

Goddamn, this news about the new album is depressing.
Any chance you're completely wrong, Mr. Doran? heh

Did you like 'Imperial Wax Solvent' (a recent-ish album I thought was pretty hot that wasn't sent back to Smithy by the label for more work - to my knowledge anyway -) or no?

mr.raffles, Monday, 29 April 2013 04:01 (twelve years ago)

Well, yes obviously it's all personal taste. When there was a big critical shift in thinking on The Fall in the late 1990s from thinking 'misunderstood genius' to 'indulged drunk' I didn't agree with it and I've always thought "Smith knows best" in the past so there's every chance I'm wrong.

I really rate IWS - it's probably my favourite naughties Fall album.

Doran, Monday, 29 April 2013 07:13 (twelve years ago)

My album picks:

1. Perverted by Language
2. Grotesque (After the Gramme)
3. Hex Enduction Hour
4. The Wonderful and Frightening World of the Fall
5. The Frenz Experiment
6. This Nation's Saving Grace
7. Bend Sinister
8. Extricate
9. Slates
10. Dragnet

My revised ballot would have Slates bumped up to #5. Not familiar with many of the '90s/'00s albums at all but I'm going to rectify that.

The only thing unusual about my top ten would have been The Unutterable mid list and a probable showing for Imperial Wax Solvent. Other than that Hex, Language, Grotesque, This Nation etc all the way.

Always surprised IWS doesn't get the love YFOC gets.
They never seem to have much trouble doing the rock thing, but "Can Can Summer" was a bit of an odd pop surprise I didn't think them capable of at that point.

Crossing my fingers re the new one.

I totally agree re: IWS. The last Fall album I really really liked

I'm sorry I said anything (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 29 April 2013 15:06 (twelve years ago)

My picks from the last few albums:

Imperial Wax Solvent:
Alton Towers
Wolf Kidult Man
50 Year Old Man
I've Been Duped
Can Can Summer
Tommy Shooter
Senior Twilight Stock Replacer

Your Future Our Clutter:
O.F.Y.C. Showcase
Bury Pts. 1+3
Hot Cake
Slippy Floor
Chino

Ersatz G.B.:
Taking Off
Nate Will Not Return
Greenway
I've Seen Them Come
Age Of Chang

Every Fall album since "Extricate" has been full of gems and garbage but there's always at least 4 or 5 genuinely great tracks on each.
