Thanks to all for the considered ballots supplied, in all there were 36 supplied ballots, of which 29 also listed their top ten albums (or less)

In this thread, we roll-out the Top Twenty Albums. (The tracks should roll out on Monday, all things being good.)

It deserves its place, I reckons: There are a lot of 'definitive versions' of certain tracks, but the vast majority are better on the source albums/whatever..

Levitate and YFOC too low!

I understand that little group of zero-vote-getters. But something that surprised me in my crossing and re crossing of the fall body since I voted was how much my enjoyment of Reformation has gone up. When it was new I found it useless, a failure to capture the weird wind tunnel sound of the American lineup. Now I'm not so sure.

Heads Roll indisputably one of the weakest, which is interesting when you consider it's Peel session is one of the two or three finest they ever did.

I was the Levitate numbernone, and YFOC was I think my number 5. Levitate is a new dimension of recorded art that nobody else will ever stumble into

Well, I got a promo of Fall Heads Roll, and the thing about it is: It is what the fall do well. But without diversion, and it's often the diversions that make it.

I did give "are" a listen via Spotify, and I could have quite easily have added it to the favourites list, but wasn't there some sort of problem with the sound quality originally? The tracks I heard were all fine.

Also, Missing Winner getting no votes makes me sad does this mean 2G+2 got votes?

It means that 2G+2 is not on the list of "actual Fall Albums" as per the excellent http://www.visi.com/fall/discog/singlesalbums.html

There are many "Live albums" and "Compilation Albums" that got no votes..

Even more glad In a Hole made it then :D maybe one of my favorite live albums for all sorts of reasons

i like a lot of the 90s and 00s, stuff, but little of it comes close to the weird pop corner they'd battered themselves into c 88

Wonderin' which of the top ten people are gonna say is "Too High"..

i like fall heads roll more than most, but yeah - if you take away "blindness" and the wonderful move cover, there isn't much left

I didn't vote for the albums because i only know about 5 albums really well, and one of those is a comp (the rough trade comp). listening to Levitate now. Can't wait for the songs countdown!

you mean YFOC? I love that record! and Infotainment Scan is really solid. not a big Kurious Oranj or RTL fan, I would have subbed in Extricate and maybe Bend Sinister.

top ten - well, we have Witch Trials, Dragnet, Grotesque, Slates, Hex, PBL, TWAFWOTF, and TNSG. that leaves two surprises by my count, maybe the ones I mentioned? Shift-Work is more likely imo.

I do too! I was reading too fast and thought that anything that had votes was in the countdown, and thus IWS was still to come. Nice record but not expecting it in the top 10 (and not heartbroken it missed the top 20).

So is code: selfish not a possible top 10? I came to really like it as just accessible pop when I went through the Fall albums last year. Not sure how it's rated by others...

I would put code:selfish as the best 'madchester fall' record, ahead of shift work and infotainment scan. Had I listened to it the day before submitting my ballot instead of 2 days after, I think I would have had it in my top 10.

is it really bad & wrong of me that I basically ignore everything between bend sinister and the light user syndrome except a few peel trax (chicago now, aussies in urp) and bonkers in phoenix? ok, and understanding that the answer is 'yes u idiot', where to really start GIVEN THAT my tastes usually skew 'weird Fall' or at least 'deranged Fall'

yeah extricate is probably the strongest in that run. seminal live isn't that good - the definition of contractual obligation album.

true, but it has some pretty weird stuff on it like "Mollusk In Tyrol" that I think Mr. imago would dig.

yeah mollusc is good and weird. first time i saw them, in 90, that was played really loud right before they came out.

I was sure Hex would walk this, but Slates a deserved winner; no flab, no filler, just six concentrated and extraordinary songs that still sound revolutionary. Ten inches of joy. V skinny rats indeed.

feel like In: Palace of Swords Reversed is the way to go if you want an expanded vision of Slates era but i don't know what the rules were so

Hex perhaps suffering from the usual thing of everyone assuming that everyone else will vote for it, leading to many voters plumping instead for their ‘other’ favourites and putting the obvious choice lower down to try and keep things even. I was guilty of this, I have to say. I do love PBL, but I think Hex is the one I listen to most frequently and thoroughly.

I revisited Slates after voting and wished I'd had it higher up in my Top 10 so I'm glad it didn't lose out... #1 for me was a close call between PBL and Grotesque.

okay, that makes more sense to me. was disappointed to see frenz and curious huddled together for warmth at the bottom of the rollout.

I went with Bend Sinister at number 1 because, let's face it, your top 10 Fall albums probably change often and that's just what I was feeling when I responded.

Number Three reporting for duty. Slates is indisputably classic, one of the peak experiences of the UK post punk pantheon, and a crown jewel in the lineage of musical statements of intent in EP format. The only record review I've ever left on amazon.com was for Slates, some ten or eleven years ago. The 10" strengthened me like blood strengthened Audrey II, energizing me into a vicious beast bent on conquering the planet. Definitely a personal touchstone, it made so much other music sound like a joke at the time I first became obsessed.

I'm not sure how that's possible, Doran, as the 3 preview tracks on the RSD single sounded pretty good to me.

I wouldn't be surprised, the last album was one of the worst things they've ever put out.

It's embarrassing. I get the feeling there's now only about a window of one hour in the day where you can get him to do stuff before he's too clattered. My sources up in Manchester say he's properly not well now also. Him being totally fucking drunk all the time I can just about handle but the band are just awful now. The worst plodders. Just shit, and I don't mind Cerebral Caustic either. For all their faults at least Domino stood up to him and sent the album back... no one should have put this out. I've only listened to it twice so maybe it'll bed in like many others have but at the moment I hate it. You know, obviously he's made his bed with drinking himself to death and it is easy enough to rationalise this course of action to yourself if you like a drink or two but it would be bad if this was the last Fall album.

Did you like 'Imperial Wax Solvent' (a recent-ish album I thought was pretty hot that wasn't sent back to Smithy by the label for more work - to my knowledge anyway -) or no?

Well, yes obviously it's all personal taste. When there was a big critical shift in thinking on The Fall in the late 1990s from thinking 'misunderstood genius' to 'indulged drunk' I didn't agree with it and I've always thought "Smith knows best" in the past so there's every chance I'm wrong.

I really rate IWS - it's probably my favourite naughties Fall album.

Always surprised IWS doesn't get the love YFOC gets.
They never seem to have much trouble doing the rock thing, but "Can Can Summer" was a bit of an odd pop surprise I didn't think them capable of at that point.

Every Fall album since "Extricate" has been full of gems and garbage but there's always at least 4 or 5 genuinely great tracks on each.
