I know, right!?!?!

I once interviewed Robert Smith and asked him if he wrote songs like "Disintegration" just to mess with Simon, and he laughed and said that Simon actually likes to play the long songs where the bass does the same thing over and over again!

Still, there must be some nights where playing 15 minute versions of 'Faith' feels like a bit of an endurance test!

Re: Disintegration, I was always under the impression that while Robert wrote all the lyrics on the album, the music came from various other band members (I recall hearing that 'Homesick' was based on one of Lol's ideas, for example?)...

Simon actually did the music for 'Fascination Street' and 'Lovesong.'

Simon because he's turned out to be much less of a douche.

Yeah, I was tempted to lean Simon anyway, but Peter Hook's de-evoltion into a total cockface puts him out of contention.

no I know I'm just a big old cranky grampa. got a lot of facebook friends whose sole actual engagement with music is via the lens of their formative years (or post-formative I guess - teens through early twenties) and it's sad to me, to a point where I get reactionary about seeing any of these names crop up, since it's not like they haven't gotten their due over the years (or in the case of Depeche Mode, much more than their due). but I shouldn't do that on ilm; hardly anybody here is on the The Music Was So Much Better Then YouTube commenter tip that seems to be the fate of...like...everybody who isn't obsessed with music

Yeah, I understand what you're getting at. I mean, I will admit to loving a LOT of '80s music but I still try to check out new releases. I like a lot of '60s and '70s music too, but even I have to let out a massive sigh whenever I see phrases like "real music" or Facebook groups called "Pink Floyd - Led Zeppelin - The Rolling Stones" etc.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Tuesday, 30 April 2013 18:49 (twelve years ago)

Both wrote some cool basslines, but Gallup stuck with it. Hook went for the top-line w/loads of shitty, warbly clone theory, his sound from 82 onwards is just the worst.

Hook wrote a million more, and Smith wrote more cool Cure basslines than Gallup

also Gallup has the cheek to make all his fights with Smith and quittings of the band so private that we often don't know about them until Smith talks about it years later, instead of mouthing off in the press and being hilarious, what a spoilsport

Hook is a twat, but this is about memorable basslines, not likability. And in that dept. it's not even close.

Gallup doesn't play on the latter, I don't think, so the choice is clear.

Both have such a distinct bass sound, but it's so similar to each other. Is it high-fretted, run through a chorus pedal? That's what it sounds like.

3×5, Wednesday, 1 May 2013 03:04 (twelve years ago)

This being ILM, Gallup will win; in a poll of folks with ears and brains, Hook would walk away with it.

rather cheering to me to see the Hook-worship so prevalent out there in indie-land hasn't got a stranglehold on ilm. he's good, writes nice lines, but he's also kind of a one-trick pony - he does The Peter Hook Sound. On every track he plays on. He makes sure you know it's him. Yngwie Hook just representing on the track for you all, glad you came to hear what I do because that's what you're gonna get

And now the former two are dead, so we will never know for sure!

Robert Smith plays bass on "Let's Go To Bed."

Bonus trivia: the drums are by Steve Goulding of the Rumour/Mekons!

You know that old joke about a young guitarist stopping at a roadhouse in the deep South for a beer? "Oh, you play guitar," says the bartender noticing the gig bag draped over his shoulder, "well, you're in luck, 'cause Blind Lemon Pledge is playing tonight." "Who's that?" "He's the greatest guitar player alive." So the guitarist sticks around. The band comes on an hour later, and they're just a bar blooz band, nothing special, but the guitarist notices the blind man with a prehistoric and extremely abused Telecaster waiting for his solo. So the second verse of "Got My Mojo Working" ends, and the old blind man begins to play and it is glorious -- the tone, the rhythm, the intensity, it's like the guy is pouring all of his existence into his solo and communicating directly into the young carpetbagger guitarist's soul.

And he's only playing one note. One glorious, transcendent note, over and over again, and it sounds incredible. The young guitarist in deeply moved, and deeply confused.

The first set goes on for about a half hour, and Blind Lemon Pledge continues to only play that one note, and it continues to be some of the most beautiful blues soloing the young guitarist has ever heard. So when Blind Lemon goes to the bar at the set break, the young sets upon him immediately. "Mr. Pledge?" he says, "My name is Stevie Ray, and I'm a guitar player, and I think that was some of the best blues playing I've ever heard." "Well, thank you, young man." "But sir, I don't understand something -- I've been studying and playing the blues for years, and I know all the greats -- Johnson, Hopkins, Waters, even BB King -- and they all play several different notes. But you, you only play one note! WHY???"

"Oh," says the blind man, smiling, "those guys are all still looking for it. I found it a long time ago."

That's Peter Hook in New Order.

He's the guy still looking or he's the guy he found the note?

In recent JD memoir he says he developed his signature sound because he bought a used amp - after answering an ad that turned out to be from an old teacher of his who moonlighted in a rock band, much like the guidance counselor on Freaks and Greeks- and the amp did not produce the lower frequencies properly.

I think some of the cool bass stuff in The Cure is really the down tuned baritone guitar stuff that Robert Smith does.

I really wish that David J. was included in this (would vote for him over the other two)

― earlnash, Monday, May 6, 2013 12:16 PM (8 hours ago)

The "baritone" is a Bass VI - i.e. it IS a bass. It has a guitar-like tuning for the six strings, but the notes on the low 4 strings are identical to a standard bass (E A D G B E). A baritone is typically tuned somewhere between a bass and a standard guitar, for example B to B instead of E to E.
The Beatles used it on a bunch of white album and Let it Be material too.

MatthewK, Monday, 6 May 2013 10:50 (twelve years ago)

Standard six-string bass tuning is actually: B-E-A-D-G-C. The four in the middle are the same as a 4-string bass (E-A-D-G), with a low B on the bottom and a high C on the top.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Monday, 6 May 2013 13:24 (twelve years ago)

Nope. There are two different kinds of six-string bass guitar; EADGBE an octave down was around long before Anthony Jackson came up with what he calls Contrabass tuning, and it continues to survive.

Three Word Username, Monday, 6 May 2013 16:11 (twelve years ago)

Hook used a six-string sometimes, like on "Blue Monday." Was that a six-string bass as well?
