Kanye West singles 2010-2012

thought it might be interesting to talk about Kanye's work the last few years post-808s & Swiftgate while avoiding the ALBUM OF THE DECADE or w/e and just looking at the radio songs, since there's been a lot of them and a few really huge ones but i dunno if there's that much consensus.

i like a fair amount of these but i feel like usually on the good ones he's seriously upstaged by Nicki, 2 Chainz, Jay, etc.

J0rdan S., Thursday, 2 May 2013 14:30 (twelve years ago)

so many of these feel like 'em murdered you on your own shit' type tracks that i can only in good conscience vote for like, 3

乒乓, Thursday, 2 May 2013 14:38 (twelve years ago)

ha i like runaway (and a bunch of others on here). voted monster, but power, NIP, and mercy were possibilities too. clique is great but i've heard it too much recently.

Deafening silence (DL), Thursday, 2 May 2013 14:46 (twelve years ago)

Start It Up vs Niggas In Paris

deeznuggz (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Thursday, 2 May 2013 15:01 (twelve years ago)

mercy, paris, clique, monster nicki verse

rest is worthless trash

for real, and not only that but kanye is usually the WORST verse on them - "monster" and "paris" are really excellent songs that would be flawless classics if it wasn't for him (and for jay on "monster"). at least he doesn't embarrass himself on "mercy" and "clique" but then on the former he gets upstaged by big sean for heaven's sake

Jay is on 7 of these songs, i don't think it's insane to suggest Kanye isn't better on him on at least a couple ("Paris" and "Gotta Have It" especially imo). Jay on his worst day ain't that far below Ye on his best day in pure rapping terms.

love bullets featuring skylar grey (some dude), Thursday, 2 May 2013 16:27 (twelve years ago)

"Marvin & Chardonnay" started to grow on me way after the fact, although as with most Roscoe Dash songs it'd've been better as RD solo

love bullets featuring skylar grey (some dude), Thursday, 2 May 2013 16:28 (twelve years ago)

I'm not as down on recent Kanye as most people here, but this list really hits home the decline. I'm not sure if any of these would even crack my list of Top 10 Kanye Singles

Evan R, Thursday, 2 May 2013 16:33 (twelve years ago)

feel weird voting Gotta Have It--hell I didn't even know it was a single--but man it's so great

kiss me, son of based god (fadanuf4erybody), Thursday, 2 May 2013 16:37 (twelve years ago)

did it get any real burn whatsoever? don't think I ever heard it on the radio

kiss me, son of based god (fadanuf4erybody), Thursday, 2 May 2013 16:37 (twelve years ago)

"Gotta Have It" did pretty well for a random not-super-radio-friendly song that had no video -- #14 in R&B airplay, which is like, in the neighborhood where something like Jeezy's "R.I.P." peaked. i'm sure there were stations that never picked up on it at all, though.

love bullets featuring skylar grey (some dude), Thursday, 2 May 2013 16:41 (twelve years ago)

1) niggas in paris
2) mercy
3) power

dyl, Thursday, 2 May 2013 16:44 (twelve years ago)

"power" is so overrated

J0rdan S., Thursday, 2 May 2013 16:56 (twelve years ago)

not much love for Start It Up huh?

deeznuggz (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Thursday, 2 May 2013 16:56 (twelve years ago)

Power is ok

deeznuggz (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Thursday, 2 May 2013 16:56 (twelve years ago)

I don't think it's a great Kanye single or even a great performance, only the best of an average lot.

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 2 May 2013 16:58 (twelve years ago)

1. otis 2. niggas in paris 3. no church in the wild 4. gotta have it 5. ham

all 1 great singles 2 that album came out at the right time and i heard so much of it in the right places that it means a lot to me despite my feelings about it before it came out and how i still feel when i realize one of my favorite songs of the last five years is something by jay-z and fuckin kanye west called niggas in paris. WHATS THAT JACKET MARGIELA kanye murders jay on his own shit for me too btw stayed quoting dumbass kanye lines all winter/spring 2012.

dylannn, Thursday, 2 May 2013 16:58 (twelve years ago)

1. all of the lights
2. mercy

worst: runaway, et, erase me, ham, wish you would

Ship Lion (some dude), Monday, 6 May 2013 01:25 (twelve years ago)

Lost in the World should have been a single, I was looking for it in the list, probably because they made a video. Voted NCITW.

Van Horn Street, Monday, 6 May 2013 09:19 (twelve years ago)

God, H*A*M was so bad.

NIP

But yeah, I don't give a fuck about most of this list

Raymond Cummings, Monday, 6 May 2013 12:21 (twelve years ago)

Whatever he's brewing in Paris right now had better be next level

Raymond Cummings, Monday, 6 May 2013 12:22 (twelve years ago)

Runaway is awesome. I'm interested in Kanye's self-loathing narcissist schtick though, I think it works and adds a layer of drama/tension to his boasts on the more straightforward songs.

i have opinions about empire burlesque (Treeship), Monday, 6 May 2013 12:52 (twelve years ago)

I like several of these fine as radio songs, but like others have said it's hard to argue that Kanye rapping is the best thing on any of them. I guess he should get credit for production on "Mercy," "Clique," and such, but the only one of these where I actually feel like the track is better for having him show up on the mic is "Otis." There's something sort of appealing about his "HaNNH!?" on "Marvin & Chardonnay" I guess.

"Otis" for the refreshing back-and-forth format, the "other other benz" which I actually did hear quoted by the youth of America (okay, one guy I worked with at Holiday Inn), and the sense that everyone involved was actually having some fun for a change. NIP bounces along nicely too but at this point I'd much rather hear that cheerfully dopey Otis loop than yet more Hard, Minimalist Plink-Plonk, not to mention Kanye's pained groaning about the mall and the grating coda.

"E.T." by far the worst.

Doctor Casino, Monday, 6 May 2013 13:10 (twelve years ago)

None of them will be as good as the one he is about to do with Skrillex.

controversial vegan pregnancy (contenderizer), Tuesday, 7 May 2013 01:56 (twelve years ago)

"No Church" is AWFUL...every verse, every line of the chorus.

Ship Lion (some dude), Tuesday, 7 May 2013 01:57 (twelve years ago)

naw, the only part I really dislike is Kanye's verse

Fred by Durst (The Reverend), Tuesday, 7 May 2013 01:58 (twelve years ago)

it works much better as dramatic album opener than as single tho obv

Fred by Durst (The Reverend), Tuesday, 7 May 2013 02:03 (twelve years ago)

apart from nickis verse i cant even listen to monster

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 7 May 2013 02:07 (twelve years ago)

as expected sasquatch, godzilla, king kong, loch ness, goblin, ghoul, zombie with no conscience and jigga proved to be a formidable voting bloc

r|t|c, Tuesday, 7 May 2013 02:13 (twelve years ago)

like monster, but mostly for nicki. don't hate the jay & kanye verses as much as most.

controversial vegan pregnancy (contenderizer), Tuesday, 7 May 2013 02:14 (twelve years ago)

i would ask what a zombie with a conscience would be like but i'm sure there's a remorseful emo zombie movie coming down the pike if it hasn't happened already

Ship Lion (some dude), Tuesday, 7 May 2013 02:15 (twelve years ago)

fonkytimez mix of 'birthday song' pwns all of these btw
