Is it too early to call MBDTF Kanye's New Jersey?
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 2 May 2013 15:22 (twelve years ago)
808s iirc.
― cacao nibs (Eric H.), Thursday, 2 May 2013 15:23 (twelve years ago)
Nah, Graduation is his New Jersey. 808s is his Nebraska.
― MarkoP, Thursday, 2 May 2013 15:40 (twelve years ago)
isn't that kim's due date
― prolego, Thursday, 2 May 2013 15:56 (twelve years ago)
Or maybe not:
Wilson has retracted his Tweet, writing "Clarity: Kanye West album release date has NOT been confirmed. Apologies to Chris Atlas."
― Ned Raggett, Thursday, 2 May 2013 16:40 (twelve years ago)
haaa it probably was kim's due date
― flamenco drop (lex pretend), Thursday, 2 May 2013 16:43 (twelve years ago)
LOL at music writers jumping on the hype train without considering it might be something a little more important to him
If it wasn't for the original Wilson post etc.

― J0rdan S., Thursday, 2 May 2013 16:57 (twelve years ago)
Wouldn't he have already known the due date a few months ago?
My guess is that it's both the due date and the album release date.
― MarkoP, Thursday, 2 May 2013 17:01 (twelve years ago)
but v much in character
― flamenco drop (lex pretend), Thursday, 2 May 2013 17:08 (twelve years ago)
In what universe is a perfect score on pitchfork and 3 or 4 relatively inescapable singles considered a New Jersey?
― billstevejim, Thursday, 2 May 2013 17:12 (twelve years ago)
why are people so desperate for opportunities to scream "New Jersey"

And since Daft Punk apparently programmed drums on it I'll just consider this phase two of the overall promotion plan.

also i'm betting that's what Daft Punk worked on:
Details surrounding his recording sessions remain scarce, but he has been in the studio with Daft Punk, who programmed drums for the album. “It was very raw: he was rapping—kind of screaming primally, actually,” Thomas Bangalter of the French duo told Rolling Stone.
i think this song will sound good in a higher quality recording, especially from 2:40 on. the lip syncing was hilarious and i'm loving the zordon vibes.

two years later and i still enjoy this album a lot, first four tracks especially still surprise and overwhelm, the charlie wilson vocal in "bound 2" still resonates
the dancehall elements are some of the best parts imo, if this album did anything for me it made me want to listen to capleton and beenie man more
very weird to read the first reactions in this thread esp to "new slaves" and see people think kanye wasn't parodying white voices in the "what you want, a bentley? fur coat? a diamond chain? all you blacks want all the same things" line, i don't know how you could hear that any other way?

same. there are things on this album that don't work but absolutely nothing that's unintentional and, of the elements considered controversial, almost nothing that's included solely to shock or lacks a pointed significance, w/ the possible exception of "i'm in it"

idk Blood on the Leaves with the juxtaposition of the original song with lines about an ex and alimony is probably the most grating, and if there is a "pointed significance" to that, let me know

album has lost its 'WTF is this' shock factor since it came out, but its still good, its just marred by a lot of the lyrics, that havent aged too well (already), and the fact that it doesnt seem to hang too well together overall. but its bound to be better than the new one.

I nearly had a heart attack the first time I heard this record. Love it to pieces; those first 4 tracks rock hard — my first time listening to the opener when I suddenly heard where the 1 was and how the verse was leaning into the groove was magical.
To me BotL seems to be about the toll of meaningless sex; subversively using "black bodies" and "strange fruit" to mean naked people getting it on. I could be projecting.

I was listening to an interview with a drummer who does sample replays for a living, and learned that the gospel sample on 'On Sight' was actually an entire replay. Days before the album dropped, they had to hire another producer/engineer to get a drummer and a gospel choir to precisely re-record the sample (which presumably couldn't be cleared). Crazy.
I.e. it's not actually this record --https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vyf7f7ouzjk
