ILX's poptimists will dismiss it as or what. But I've been absolutely ensnared by this album. Great backstory – Faulkner's grandson, former addict, got clean and won back his wife and kids, and documented the whole thing on this album. Anyone else been as entranced as me?

John Murry was born in Tupelo, Mississippi and is the second cousin of William Faulkner through adoption

DAMN THE PRESS PACK LIED!
Doesn't stop the album being great.

watched some vids. cuz i'm bored. better than beck or pete yorn anyway! dig the 9-minute heroin epic released as a single. watching and listening i kept thinking man they must love this guy in the u.k. and then i see it was uncut's album of the year. can i call them or can i call them? not bad though.

i only thought of beck cuzza the drum track on the california song and the po' face vocals at the beginning. i can definitely see them playing him on the radio station here that plays greg brown and ray lamontagne and all those weary dudes.

Greg Brown's been at it a long time, he's earned a little weariness

think he was born weary.

Brit paper's review loves the "weaping Americana"
"Americana" musically in crit-speak and in the biz is nearly always white guys these days

mags like Uncut have an endless capacity for weary ameridudes. they even loved that weary kid from marthas vineyard that my wife knows. he actually sounds a little like this guy at times. even though he's a young dude from marthas vineyard.

x-post -"weeping" spelling typo. Admittedly, the Americana lovers like Mavis Staples and Bettye Lavette too-- African-American singers who reverently and politely reach back, usually with the aid of indie-rock producers or classic rock covers. But they're not interested in any of the current Southern soul singers Xchuckxx and I talk about on the Chitlin circuit soul thread. But that shouldn't take away from Murry, whom I should give a chance to, and shouldn't blame, just because he gets more press and marketing than Ms. Jody or Mel Waiters
― curmudgeon, Monday, 6 May 2013 16:16 (twelve years ago)
to say nothing of the music, which I haven't heard-- i'm starting to really get annoyed by this whole "authentic backstory" as marketing ploy thing.
― Poliopolice, Monday, 6 May 2013 16:21 (twelve years ago)
xpost I think one reason lots of the stuff you're talking about on the Chitlin soul thread doesn't get talked about by the UK press is that … it doesn't really reach the UK. Either way, as you say, don't blame Murry for what happens or doesn't happen to other artists.

Watched it last night. Eh, it's ok.

Huh. So I'm about to see this guy almost by chance here in LA. One of the opening acts is a dude from Wolfmother, gack. But apparently Roger Manning and David Baerwald are helping back Murry? Could be interesting.
