this might be the best side 1 of 2008, possibly the best from the 2000's.

Oh shit. This is difficult. And important.

Treeship, Thursday, 16 May 2013 01:20 (twelve years ago)

Probably will have to go "Time to Pretend" for the sublime resignation, although I do love saying "the youth are starting to change" at relevant moments.

Treeship, Thursday, 16 May 2013 01:21 (twelve years ago)

that cover was suppose to be in the original post, messed that up...

Bee OK, Thursday, 16 May 2013 02:18 (twelve years ago)

that one, you know the one, yeah that one

controversial vegan pregnancy (contenderizer), Thursday, 16 May 2013 02:23 (twelve years ago)

but i find this album bugs me more now than it did then

Didn't this come out in 2007? Torn between TTP and Kids.

monster_xero, Thursday, 16 May 2013 02:26 (twelve years ago)

can't remember what any of the songs on Side 2 sound like

monotony, Thursday, 16 May 2013 03:01 (twelve years ago)

possibly the best from the 2000's.

I wouldn't go that far, but it's a solid Side A.

billstevejim, Thursday, 16 May 2013 05:26 (twelve years ago)

also "The Youth"

Agree with this.

It's got to be Time to Pretend just ahead of the other two singles. I actually rate the second album more these days.

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 16 May 2013 05:46 (twelve years ago)

easily 'Of Moons, Birds & Monsters, still their best song.

PaulTMA, Thursday, 16 May 2013 11:40 (twelve years ago)

I love the three singles from this but never had much time for the rest of it. Would vote for 'Electric Feel'.

Gavin, Leeds, Thursday, 16 May 2013 12:06 (twelve years ago)

Electric Feel is their only song I've wanted to hear more than once (of the four or so I've actually heard)

sons of plutarchy (will), Thursday, 16 May 2013 12:24 (twelve years ago)

Side 2 has those songs that you forget about until you hear them by chance years later

calstars, Thursday, 16 May 2013 13:12 (twelve years ago)

special place in my <3 for this album as it'll always remind me of meeting my g/f back in (k-blimey!) 2008

Pingu Unchained (dog latin), Thursday, 16 May 2013 13:45 (twelve years ago)

Was gonna vote for Kids but it's ever so slightly overplayed. Went for Time To Pretend as I remember connecting with the lyrics quite a lot at that time.

Seriously such a front-loaded album.

hard not to vote for "Time to Pretend."

Time to Pretend all the way. Funny and sharp. Then Kids was something about trees?

Forgot this ended today. would have given a pity vote to "Pieces of What"--I hear nice slow bluegrass/string band version in my head.

Classic.

It's always time to pretend

H.P, Thursday, 5 December 2024 07:53 (seven months ago)

That put a smile on my face

Bee OK, Thursday, 5 December 2024 19:50 (seven months ago)

A detail from the Rob Harvilla podcast on "Kids": When labels were bidding for MGMT they were asked for a list of their dream producers and they offered "Barack Obama" and "not Sheryl Crow."

Grape Fired At Czar From Crack Battery (President Keyes), Thursday, 5 December 2024 19:55 (seven months ago)

Awesome. Kind of mind-blowing to think about the time this occurred and how different it was when the song became a hit - OutKast was at the top of the world and their biggest album wasn't out yet, and Taylor Swift and Kanye West were basically unknowns, plus the Iraq War just started with Barack Obama still pretty much unknown outside of his own district.

I know two people who were at Wesleyan at that time, though haven't spoken to them in a while. I'm looking in the crowd and thinking "is that them?"

I could have chosen to vote for this, I love the way the final choruses drop a semitone in pitch instead of the expected/clichéd rise, and it gives them a burnished, hazy nostalgic aura, pulling back on any possible anthemic triumphalism .

Halfway there but for you, Saturday, 7 December 2024 17:53 (seven months ago)

The youth and weekend wars both get stuck in my head from time to time. Great tracks

H.P, Saturday, 7 December 2024 22:07 (seven months ago)

I remember seeing Oracular Spectacular somewhat dumped upon when support was gathering round Congratulations, but it's a brilliant album isn't it

PaulTMA, Saturday, 7 December 2024 22:27 (seven months ago)

it's very impressive how much they had this nailed down even when they were just goofin' around in the quad
