Apparently we haven't done this. Listening to it now for the first time in years on the back of seeing them at ATP last weekend. Totally solid album.

DLZ

Simon H., Thursday, 16 May 2013 12:54 (twelve years ago)

and "DLZ" gets my vote. Heard it in "Breaking Bad" last week – tremendous song, with the singer's outrage making up for dodgy NEVER YOU MIND DEATH-PROFESSOR nonsense

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 16 May 2013 12:54 (twelve years ago)

For me it's between DLZ, Halfway Home and Love Dog

Hearing it as someone who never clicked with TVOTR before (or indeed after), Halfway Home blew my mind but yeah, it's a solid album.

Deafening silence (DL), Thursday, 16 May 2013 12:58 (twelve years ago)

Only song I don't really like is the dreary Family Tree

a much better album than Return to Cookie Mountain, this.

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 16 May 2013 13:00 (twelve years ago)

Yep. Can't really get into Nine Types of Light either except for a couple of tunes.

It's astounding how well the lyrics resonate with BB, it almost could've been written about Walter White!

Anyone else?

Pasty, British & Shit (wins), Monday, 20 May 2013 13:10 (twelve years ago)

Only really like Halfway Home and Shout Me Out; voting latter as it's always better than I remember

bleeding like a stoke pig (imago), Monday, 20 May 2013 13:14 (twelve years ago)

2) family tree
3) golden age

golden age

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Has anyone ever noticed that the introduction of Family Tree has the same tune as Blue Savannah by Erasure?

Anyway this is still my favourite album of theirs and I'll vote for Lover's Day which is one of my favourite album closers of recent years.

Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 22 May 2013 00:05 (twelve years ago)

Haven't listened to this for ages, thanking you for reminding me.

"Red Dress". I don't really care about any of the songs that come after it and can't fathom why people are voting for "DLZ".

MIGUEL 3D: THEY FLY @ U FACE (The Reverend), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 04:05 (twelve years ago)

this record really hit me but it wasn't enough to get me into any of their others (save some enjoyable listening to the earlier ep stuff).

j., Wednesday, 22 May 2013 05:58 (twelve years ago)

Previous record has much higher highs for me (the last two tracks, mostly)

OH NO, SECONDS LEFT, SECONDS LEFT, AND THERE IT IS. REGRET. (imago), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 09:52 (twelve years ago)

Huh, for me Red Dress onward is the best run of songs.

This thread made me give Nine Types of Light another chance. It's actually a pretty great record, it just didn't live up to the previous two albums.

Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 22 May 2013 23:16 (twelve years ago)

Does anyone else have a hard time not hearing "Family Tree" as the Love Theme from Rachel Getting Married?

da croupier, Wednesday, 22 May 2013 23:18 (twelve years ago)

I have a hard time hearing "Don't Let It Bring You Down" as the Spacey-Suvari love scene in American Beauty.

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 23:21 (twelve years ago)

The lyrics to Red Dress are really, really good. I voted for Lovers Day though, such a perfect way to end this record. 'Yes dear of course there are miracles / under your sighs and moans / I'm gonna take you / i'm gonna take you / I'm gonna take you home!' Build up to final climax. Fin.

I like the afro-funk jams on this record and don't give much of a fuck about TVOTR beyond that

the correct winner

dyl, Thursday, 23 May 2013 00:02 (twelve years ago)

i'm cool with lovers day but it's kind of a hilarious boner fanfare esp in the context of "i was a lover" from the last album.

da croupier, Thursday, 23 May 2013 00:09 (twelve years ago)

stork & owl got robbed though, that song is really pretty

da croupier, Thursday, 23 May 2013 00:09 (twelve years ago)

Lover's Day is good but there are at least five better cuts and I'm kind of baffled by its victory.

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Thursday, 23 May 2013 01:35 (twelve years ago)

I thought DLZ would sweep this FWIW, so I kind of tactically voted for Halfway Home.
