by Mary J...from What's the 411?..really, isn't it spectacular how it still sounds so fresh today

i fucking LOVE this song.

i decided it was the best song of the '90s awhile ago. don't even front otherwise!

brian badword (badwords), Sunday, 6 October 2002 01:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I've worse candidates. And better ones.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 6 October 2002 01:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Make that 'I've heard,' etc.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 6 October 2002 01:16 (twenty-three years ago)

oh come on Ned... haha...explain which ever song could possibly compete here w/ Ms. Blige's, as it has soul, catchiness, street-appeal & cred, hot beats, emotional depth, era-defining rep, soaring bridge, rough-edged romanticism and historical/influential value all rolled into one..

btw, when was the last time u Ameobaed? last time i was there i was wondering if i would run into u around some corner ! hehe

V, Sunday, 6 October 2002 01:23 (twenty-three years ago)

or okay, maybe i should modify the claim: best r&b song from the 90s..surely we can grant it that?

V, Sunday, 6 October 2002 01:24 (twenty-three years ago)

You gotta keep in mind I've never been a Blige lover (or hater for that matter) -- my impression's always been that she's all right enough, whereas I can't fucking get some of Mariah's worst moments out of my head, goddammit, and loathe her all the more for it. In fact it wasn't until Fred S. did some bit of rhapsody over Mary J. a couple of years back that I realized what status she did have for some!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 6 October 2002 04:18 (twenty-three years ago)

it make me dance. i luv mary j.

di smith (lucylurex), Sunday, 6 October 2002 04:42 (twenty-three years ago)

for one strange second I thought this was referring to the "Beatles" song of the same name.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Sunday, 6 October 2002 05:20 (twenty-three years ago)

i could see someone thinking that blige wasn't extraordinary, and she probably isn't. but her complete lack of any pretension whatsoever and her down-to-grit earthniness and very, very real emotionalism conveyed through honest accounts of suffering (both pre- and post-fame) make her very hard to dismiss as just another competent r&b singer, besides from the fact that she was historically the epicenter of new jill swing turning into hip-hop soul - (whatever that means). she has a distinguishable personality. she never had to construct a persona or make-up her past. and she never has to overly rely on production values or showy beats to hide genuine musical statements, and has written enough of her own words to prove that she is more than a gifted vocalist...for all these reasons, she is almost as lauded now as the 70s soul singers are, if not quite at their level in the r&b pantheon...

she is just as important to 90s r&b as missy elliott, but on the complete other side of the spectrum...and i think her legacy will be more secure than someone who was initially attractive but now splits people (like lauryn hill). she will never be as preachy as india.arie (who is already giving free life-lessons on her second album at the age of um, 25). and the songs on those early albums may almost justify producer puff daddy/p diddy's very existence

so for those reasons mary j should be respected if not liked, as long as these consensual ja rule duets never ever happen again and the re-mix albums are kept to a minimum.

now as for mariah...

V, Sunday, 6 October 2002 05:29 (twenty-three years ago)

i rate SWV's 'I'm So Into You' higher, esp. the Allstarz Drop Mix..less of a pop aspect but stronger flavour

and if 'Say My Name' by Dc counts than that as well

blueski, Sunday, 6 October 2002 10:14 (twenty-three years ago)

also for R&b songs of the 90s...surely 'No Diggity' wins this? and there are many songs by Mary J i prefer to 'Real Love' (which i hated at the time cos i wasnt a fan of that style/genre then despite being quite big on the Teddy Riley stuff) tho incluidng 'Be Happy', 'All That I Can Say', 'Family Affair' and esp. 'I'm Goin Down'

blueski, Sunday, 6 October 2002 10:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Other candidates:

"One In A Million"
"Creep"
"My Lovin' (Never Gonna Get It)"

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 6 October 2002 14:14 (twenty-three years ago)

En Vogue owns this, I think.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 6 October 2002 15:58 (twenty-three years ago)

now that tim's brought it up, i think 'creep' might be the winner, though everything mentioned has been good (except the swv song which i don't know). 'real love' is pretty amazing.

dave k, Sunday, 6 October 2002 16:12 (twenty-three years ago)

"Creep" is a fantastic song, but I think I might prefer "Real Love" to it. I know I prefer "My Lovin' (Never Gonna Get It)" to it.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 6 October 2002 17:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Thought about the songs mentioned: I know there are R&B songs I like more than these, but there's something so all-encompassing and inevitable about these choices (and "Real Love" as well) which is hard to put into words. Like it's irrelevant that I might actually prefer "Diggin' On You" and "Silly Ho" to "Creep"; "Creep" is the song to choose because it's TLC's stab at definitiveness.

I agree with Dan though that "My Lovin" is the bestest of the bestest.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 6 October 2002 21:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh yeah, and what's odd is that I allow "definitiveness" to be a consideration for R&B whereas I would strenuously avoid such a criterion in other genres.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 6 October 2002 21:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Search: Mike Doughty's deadpan vanilla cover of this on Skittish.

j.lu (j.lu), Sunday, 6 October 2002 21:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah theres just something about all of these songs that grabs my definitiveness-meter, even though personally if i was to make a "real list" i would rank my personal fave "Are You That Somebody?" as one of the highest...one of the highest singles of the 90s, not just R&b tracks.

But there was just something about "Real Love" that seemed to jump out at me yesterday: probably the fact that after recently getting the album it was on I fully heard it for the first time in, like, 8 years!!

"My Lovin'" is fucking hot from back in the day, but then that entire Funky Divas album is so, so good. En Vogue really outclassed everybody, even if there were no noticeable personalities standing out till much later (shout out to Dawn Robinson). Salt-n-Pepa were the pioneers, but TLC wins hands down for definitiveness-awards amongst girl groups (biggrest since the Supremes?) as all three worked superbly as a unit and had three distinguishable personas as well, but they've recently been eclipsed by a flawed attempt at facsimile (Destiny's Child - and yes its a singular child, as only Beyonce seems striking enough to succeed alone, with all due respect to Kelly and Michele) and the original incarnation is all but over now. It just can never be the same again, and a new girl-group has to emerge to take back that definitiveness-mantle..

I saw him do this live several years ago. It was great.

Semi-unrelated: I just downloaded an mp3 of this and had my mind blown when I heard the snippet of the Feelies' "Only Life" he throws in in the breakdown. That's one of my very favorite songs.

call me a stick in the mud but i think 'vanilla covers' are pretty zzz.

'only life' #1.

brian badword (badwords), Monday, 7 October 2002 06:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I like "Be Happy" more but I know it better too.

Is "Right Here (Human Nature)" R & B?

Tom (Groke), Monday, 7 October 2002 09:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Destiny's Child - and yes its a singular child, as only Beyonce seems striking enough to succeed alone, with all due respect to Kelly and Michele

This is a good time to point out that Kelly has had more hits outside of Destiny's Child than Beyonce. I've always said that she would be the one to have the most successful solo music career and early indications point to me being correct.

"Right Here (Human Nature)" is definitely R 'n B and is SWV's best song by a long ways.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 7 October 2002 11:31 (twenty-three years ago)

no, 'I'm So Into You' is the best SWV song dagnabbit!

blueski, Monday, 7 October 2002 11:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Another vote for "One In A Million." And on the subject of TLC, let's not forget "Ain't 2 Proud 2 Beg" - in fact, no one ever goes on about their first album, but I reckon it's still a stormer ("CrazySexyCool" and "Hotmail" are classics as well, obv).

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 7 October 2002 11:53 (twenty-three years ago)

damn I meant "Fanmail" featuring the smash hit "No Yahoos."

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 7 October 2002 11:54 (twenty-three years ago)

"Real Love" is amazing, and is probably no. 2 on my list of favorite R&B singles of the nineties, but "Are You That Somebody?" wins. It is sometimes my favorite song of the 90s.
(Oh and when was "Buffalo Stance" recorded? That is another favorite of mine but I think it is '89, right? Or am I way off?)

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Monday, 7 October 2002 14:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Buffalo stance was '88 i believe...but that doesnt seem very R n' B

blueski, Monday, 7 October 2002 15:08 (twenty-three years ago)

All these songs are great! But My Love (never gonna &etc...) is the best!

Dan I., Monday, 7 October 2002 15:16 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm not talking in best evers, but i'm really feeling aaliyah's "4 page letter" right now. it's all about that floaty "ooh ooh" background loop.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Monday, 7 October 2002 15:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Sensitivity - Ralph Tresvant. BEst ever.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 7 October 2002 15:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Not with that video.

Do you not feel my love, Dan? I am crushed.

New Edition's Ralph (Ned), Monday, 7 October 2002 15:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I punch you!

Violent Mahir (Dan Perry), Monday, 7 October 2002 16:07 (twenty-three years ago)

And with your new computer you can download Ralph GIFs all day.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 October 2002 16:25 (twenty-three years ago)

More props for "My Lovin". I love the girl gang closing ranks ("What makes you think you can walk back into her life", "she don't love you, no way"), the "never gonna get it" is some of the best taunting on record.

Is it possible to dance badly to this single? Best sashaying ever.

Mike (mratford), Monday, 7 October 2002 17:23 (twenty-three years ago)

(haha unless I copy the URL, Ned's taunting is thwarted by Angelfire)

Mike may be onto something here. People I know who dance like Elaine Benes suddenly become ultra dancefloor macks when "My Lovin'" comes on. It's uncanny.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 7 October 2002 17:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Going back to this:

"Creep" is the song to choose because it's TLC's stab at definitiveness.

Every TLC album has a definitive single, though. The first one has "Ain't Too Proud To Beg", the second is a toss-up between "Creep" and "Waterfalls" and the third album has "No Scrubs".

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 7 October 2002 18:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Buffalo stance was '88 i believe...but that doesnt seem very R n' B"

But the chorus... it is close enough for me.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Monday, 7 October 2002 18:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Ain't Too Proud To Beg!!! - featured featured the girls wearing those condoms in the video, remember that! It was so sassy!

yah buffalo stance is '89 and like i said before i think neneh cherry's homebrew album from'92 is criminally underrated, but it expands beyond r&b to show us the beginnings of trp-hop

V, Monday, 7 October 2002 22:13 (twenty-three years ago)

"Are U That Somebody?"
