Trojan Records' new 2CD history of dub. Features many names I've never heard of. Has anybody heard it? Is it any cop?

Haven't heard the comp itself, but looking thru the track listing, most of the artists I can vouch for, except for a small minority that seem hopelessly obscure. BTW,the Crystalites were also responsible for a fabulous dub version of Shaft.

The Crystalites were Derrick Harriott's studio band, so played on loads of classic tracks (e.g. Keith & Tex 'Stop That Train')

re: the obscure names on dub records - it's because they just make up any old name for the track title and the artist to write on the b-side.

[do you work at Syzygy? i know who used to work there...]

there's a 'someone' missing from that last line

I saw this in the shops last week. Looked solid, although Trojan was past its heyday when dub was at its height. (Mind you both the Trojan dub boxes are good). The Tubby/Aggrovators stuff on it is ace, as are the Jammys cuts.

one month passes...
Got this at the weekend, and it’s excellent. There are only 5 tracks in common with the 100 tracks on the 2 Trojan Dub box sets, and plenty of rare versions. The Crystallites track on Disc one – Dubbing The Chariot – is absolutely amazing -, organ and vocoder duelling over a super-tuff rhythm. I’m surprised that this was produced by Derek Harriott, who I’d normally associate with far smoother stuff than this – although I don’t know who engineered it. Their track on Disc Two – ‘Guidance’ – seems to take the first few horn notes of ‘Uptown Top Ranking/Still In Love With You’ and weld it on to a rocksteady chassis – although I’m not sure that this is really what’s going on – that’s the fun of dub! Also on Disc One, there’s a version of Ali Baba, The Treasure Isle All Stars/Duke Reid ‘ Arabian Dub’ which I’d never heard before, This one differs from the gazillions of King Tubby/Bunny Lee versions by replacing Tubby’s characteristic ‘drag’ rhythm with a more upright and springy organ track and a drum sound that sounds like a basketball bouncing on a polished wood floor. The earliest track here, Andy Capp’s ‘Pop A Top’, is based on a soft drinks commercial (Sip a Sip, Taste a Taste) and is remarkably odd – Lynford Anderson as Reggae’s Joe Meek?

I haven’t actually made it through to the end yet because I keep having to replay virtually every track , but so far the absolute highlight is Joe Gibbs’ (but of course) ‘Rockers Dub’. It’s driving me mad trying to remember what this is versioned from – the vocal goes something like ‘Rockers are no crockers(?) Rockers are heavy music (something)’. Anyone know?

Anyone know the source of Rocker's Dub?

Tim H? M. Matos?

Has anyone heard that new Madlib-selected comp on Trojan? Looks like it may have the version of Shaft that Baboon mentioned above, plus lots of other quirky selections (it has 'Space Flight' by U-Roy on it - top tune!)

Dr. C, the answer appears to be Glen Washington - "Rockers No Crackers". Can't find an mp3 to confirm it but the title's right and google tells me that the original was also a Gibbs production. Google doesn't seem quite sure whether it was Glen or George though.

(The version is indeed mighty fine.)

YEEEESSSS! Mmmmwah - Rebecca! You are fantastic for remembering this, and I definitely have this track on some comp or other. I love how this happens all the time with reggae - you keep looping back and forward to discover new stuff, rediscover old stuff etc.

nebbesh - are you talking about 'Funky Kingston'? It looks like a Trojan attempt to muscle in on the interest created by Soul Jazz's 'Hustle' collection.

Actualy I just looked at the tracklisting - it has Lloyd Charmers 'Shaft', but not Space Flight. Space Flight is on one of the Trojan boxes, possibly Rare Groove?

Dr C, Trojan now have what looks like a mix CD with about 63 tracks on it, perhaps that's the one referred to above.

I like 'Pop a Top' best from Flashing Echo, but it hasn't all sunk in yet, 2 CDs is an awful lot in this case. No complaints though.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 21 November 2002 10:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah yes - 'Blunted in The Bomb Shelter' is what it's called. It's not on Trojan, but mixes their stuff.
