listening to mostly metal the past year, no surprise I missed this news, but I just saw they're doing a show in my area in September. Um, snapping tix up asap.
seriously had been lobbying for a G.M. reunion the last two years, so stoked.

I'm not a big hip-hop listener but somehow I always loved this band. This sounds very good.

So one day of listening later there are what feels like five or six classic GMob tracks on this:I'm SetValleujahSpecial EducationUnderstanding Father Time
and then there's a bunch of tracks that are pure mega-corny Cee-Lo projects like Ghosts of Gloria Goodchild, Come As You Are, Nexperience and (woo boy at this last one, it's a total disaster) Amy. All of these have deeply diminishing returns.
Then there's a handful of other tracks that are strange mishmoshes of interesting production and/or rapping that either slip somewhere or just too minor to go one way or the other, like U Don't Know What U Got /State of Emergency (very "Hair"), Kolors ("Music is color/a range of hues/BB King sang the blues" sounds like a Lonely Island line), State of the Art (sounds a lot like a lost Isaac Hayes track but muddy) and Power (Cee-Lo chants "white power" over a guitar line here which sounds like a joke but isn't).
So 5 I'll listen to for the rest of the year easy, 4 I don't really need to hear anymore at all, 3 I feel like I need to listen to more and a handful of skits/shorts that are good, bad and indifferent. I can't complain. I just wish that the half of this that sounds like a hip-hop musical would calm down. Curious to see how this hits old heads/young kids who might try them for the sake of monae.

there's a lot of moments where the mob seems to have decided that one monkey might stop no show but that monkey got fucking RICH and FAMOUS so lets try it his way
― YOU FOOLS PAY OVER $2.50 for a comic book (forksclovetofu), Friday, 23 August 2013 04:45 (twelve years ago)
but goddamn, the highs. Special Education, I'm Set, Father Time and Pinstripes (did I leave that off somehow?) is as good as anything they've ever done.

State of the Art is kind of a mess. at least its quick
― I’m pissed off for greatness (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Sunday, 25 August 2013 06:28 (twelve years ago)
damn, Power had potential, then the hook. this album is way too loooooooud and busy so far. ease up
― I’m pissed off for greatness (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Sunday, 25 August 2013 06:29 (twelve years ago)
IM SET. now we're talking. eh those horns, coulda done without, seems like Ceelo is like MAKE IT THEATRICAL and just throws in something over the top just cos.
― I’m pissed off for greatness (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Sunday, 25 August 2013 06:32 (twelve years ago)
Valleujah is dope but why the hook? Coulda been a low key banger. Hook kinda bugs, too loud, too much. damn you cee-lo you ruiner
― I’m pissed off for greatness (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Sunday, 25 August 2013 06:34 (twelve years ago)
Pinstripes still great.Special Ed hook is kinda cheeze but she sounds good, at least its a break from c lo. His verse is cool tho.Kolors is ok. horns at the end are nice.lol Come as you are.Nexperience is good, C lo goes in kinda hard.
― I’m pissed off for greatness (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Sunday, 25 August 2013 06:44 (twelve years ago)

Understanding is cool, like something youd hear on one of their old albums.
― I’m pissed off for greatness (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Sunday, 25 August 2013 06:46 (twelve years ago)
Father Time yeah, low key good. Kinda wish theyd just stick to the simpler sounds. Ceelo sprinked this whole thing with his pop juice and it suffers big time. def some keepers tho.
― I’m pissed off for greatness (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Sunday, 25 August 2013 06:49 (twelve years ago)
It's not so much pop juice as it is grandiose Broadway mythology of a sort but i don't think it ruins the album. Just a weird direction, like somebody let Ringo drive.

I got the album but I went out of state shortly after and haven't had a chance to listen.
their entire tour, sans a handful of shows in Atlanta and LA, got cancelled. so looks like I won't be seeing them. what was so bad about the show you saw?
― Neanderthal, Sunday, 1 September 2013 14:57 (twelve years ago)
started two hours late but whateverterrible model dj with no skills and no engagementwhole thing felt like Cee-Lo presents The Goodie Mobthis "V" protege is terrible and she got about as much stage time as T-Moat one point, cee-lo did a full rendition of Dont'cha with her which is like, what the fuck am i at a gmob show for to hear you do thatthe rapping and most of the song selection was excellent (Cell Therapy! Grillz!) but the songs were badly mixed and often unrecognizable $50 ticket for a show that pulled what looked like 300 people in a 2000 person room
― YOU FOOLS PAY OVER $2.50 for a comic book (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 1 September 2013 15:32 (twelve years ago)
ahh. that's the problem with rap shows. I've never felt like there's much quality control, half of them I've seen are great, half atrocious, little middle ground.
I'm guessing the attendance is why they cancelled the tour. oh well. as far as starting two hours late that's not surprising. Mobb Deep came on like two hours late too, Wu-Tang 90 minutes when I saw them :).
yeah I can imagine the rest of Goodie Mob is not happy about the overemphasized Cee-Lo angle but apparently the reunion has been so weakly received it's been necessary.
― Neanderthal, Sunday, 1 September 2013 15:46 (twelve years ago)
yeah, late shows are nothing new. but it's the attendance that's been hitting them hard up north. People who love goodie mob will come in from out of state but they're unlikely to get any new fans at this stage in the game and they've just never had real fan penetration north of the mason/dixon
