Listening to it again tonight and I think it's such a melancholic masterpiece.
Why is it so underrated compared to Talking Book, Innervisions and Songs in the Key of Life?

unfathomable

I think it's one of his best, but I've never liked the title.

Love this album - They Won't Go When I Go might be my favourite Stevie cut (well, you know, until it's I Wish or Love Having You Around or etc etc)
It shouldn't be underrated. Too Shy To Say (with the session musician nerd bait of Jamerson and Sneaky Pete Kleinow on bass & pedal steel respectively), the Beach Boys/Bacharach thing of It Ain't No Use... It's maybe slightly more chill than the rest and the big funk single is a Superstition rip kinda? But IDGAF. I love weird chill moog masterpieces.

the lack of hits is the reason i guess, and yeah the title doesn't help. Please Don't Go is in my Stevie Top 5 easy.

a weird thing i read on Wiki recently about an amazing track from the Jungle Fever soundtrack:
It is rumored that "Feeding Off The Love of the Land" was originally intended for release on Fulfillingness' First Finale Volume Two, a project that has never been confirmed as completed.

Huh, weird, I was just revisiting the poll thread for this the other day - What's the best track on "Fulfillingness First Finale"?
It's a nice listen but I have a harder time keeping track of it in my head, maybe because of the absence of huge singles/anchor songs.

xpost: "You Haven't Done Nothin'" was a number one hit in the States...although it's the only chart topper I've never heard on the radio by him (aside from "Fingertips").
I've never heard of FFF V2 (surely Fulfillingness' Second Finale), got any more info about that?
― arctic mindbath (President of the People's Republic of Antarctica), Saturday, 25 May 2013 02:20 (twelve years ago)
xxxxpost re. hypehat: yeah, "YADN" is definitely a rehash of "Superstition", but an effective one at that.

If I were ?uestlove, I'd play You Haven't Done Nuthin' for Bono's wak on music.

crikey YHDN went to Number 1 in the States? went to number 30 in the UK. hadn't heard of Finale Volume 2 until very recently.

It's very good but it seems to me the religious/spiritual lyrics sometimes get in the way for me more on this particular album than on his other 70s albums.
The very opening chords of "Smile Please" are the musical embodiment of my romanticized idea of The Urban.
Listening now. Yeah yeah, it is undoubtedly great. Mmmm. The indescribable specificities of art.

Love this album. Songs In the Key of Life is my favourite of his but this is a close second. I think Creepin' is probably my favourite Stevie song these days.

Does anyone else sort of fall into a music listening hole from time to time? Like, I heard Strange Relationship by Prince recently then listened to nothing barely anything but Prince for a fortnight. And there's only a select few artists for which this happens to me. Miles, Prince, the Beatles... But my number one music hole guy, as measured by the number of times I've fallen, is Stevie.
I fell earlier this year when there was a videogame trailer that used his Skeletons... and I think this thread is setting me off again.

Probably my least favorite of his 70s run, relatively speaking. Haven't listened to it in a while, but there are a few too many medium-tempo slow-burners for my taste. Should revisit, especially since "Boogie On" and "You Haven't Done Nothin'" (the most political thing the Jackson 5 ever did) are in my Stevie top 5.

My favorite album of Stevie's 70's run (Music of My Mind a close second). I like how slow it is in comparison to the other records from the time.

'heaven is 10 zillion light years away' is almost like an entire gospel song in the optative mood

and rather brooding for a gospel song too

would've been a pretty good album title for the 6ths, though.

“they won’t go when I go” is so masterful, it’s like a dark wintery epilogue to “visions”’ ‘when autumn comes around’
