...i'll be honest, i've listened to it a couple times, and while it sounds pretty chill, i'd say it's not representative of his output in general and definitely not his best release. it's pretty sad music; inspired by a breakup, i believe. kind of squanders his greatest strength, which is singing these really earnest, almost cheesy-inspirational lyrics that--despite occasionally sad--always have an overriding really powerful joyful vibe.
everybody's gotta check out his back catalogue, all of which is uploaded & available for free on the arbutus website:
tripple midnight karma : this one's the best imo. front to back classic, amazing lyrics, sounds like it was all recorded on the same keyboard/drum machine with the same settings. "common be happy," the song in the live clip posted above is off this one, has some great lines that exemplify what i love about him so much as a songwriter: struck myself in the face again last night/with the hand of a million goodbyes just really simple, basically a cliché, but really great imagery, really sticks with you right away... everyone's gotta get this one
flamingo this one's on kind of a folky, breezy vibe for the most part. "chin chin" is my friend tara, who turned me onto him, 's favourite

mutual feelings of respect and admiration this one's tagged "Disco" in itunes, and while it does have some disco strings, it's not as danceable as tripple midnight karma, more of a creepy lounge vibe. instrumentation sounds like strings, bass, bongos, and an acoustic guitar?
even though the recordings aren't "hi-fi" or studio recordings, i think there's a pretty clear distinction between this and other lo-fi indie pop stuff of the past few years. it's really clear-cut, simple music, almost childlike at times, doesn't have that murky reverb all over everything, and his voice always cuts through
anyways, hope some of yall enjoy this stuff. some of my most listened to music this year. imo this guy's a total pop star
