RFD: Black Rebel Motorcycle Club

(side note: I propose RFD [Request For Discussion] as a way to initate a discussion of a band which is not CoD or S&D, perhaps because it is new) So I just bought the debut of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, who I just discovered is the "new favorite band" of Noel Gallagher (strike one) and I think it is fairly good, but spotty. The fuzz and distortion bits are lovely, but it seems to sort of fade to generic on about half the tracks. The best tracks, strung together, I think could make a really standout EP. But I haven't really gotten much of a critical assessment together yet. And that's where you (yes, you) come in. So discuss, please.

Stick with PSYCHOCANDY by the Jesus & Mary Chain.

Yeah, I'm with Alex, what I know of them. Friend of mine has seen them a number of times in LA, says that they do what they do and do it well enough, but the world ain't coming to an end with them around.

Aren't they from Berkeley? How could they possibly be good?

Uh. I looked at their CD. It didn't entice me into playing the thing, though. Looked a little too self-conscious.

Came to a new conclusion over the course of an all-night cram session. BMRC is great music for such a mood. Etherial enough to soothe, and rocking enough to keep me alert rather than drifting.

i really like the idea of being able to talk about a band without resorting to classic or dud format, but 'rfd' just makes me think of that lame andy griffith spin-off 'mayberry rfd' (um, 'rural fire department', in case you were wondering). so maybe we should think of a better one.

I like 'RFD'. It makes me feel like I'm back on usenet (sniff).

So Sterl, does rebellion come up at all in the music or lyrics? Or more importantly, motorcycles?

Actually, it seems to go between rock, love, and Jesus. The spacemen 3 comparisons aren't invented from whole cloth, you know.

RFD?? The idea's fine, it's just the abbreviation, sounds too close to R.D.F. (Radical Dance Faction)

one year passes...
I like a lot them. Maybe, not worth the hype, though. Their name doesn't pertain to their music. It was just from a movie. Sometimes they seem a little bored. Actually, my favorite B.R.M.C. songs aren't on the album. They are "Down Here" and "At My Door." They are pretty good live. They sound more fresh and less bored.

I thought this was a Request for Discombobulation. Of course completely impossible unless you put the record on your head and spin around at the speed at lightning. Apparently you can hear the Reid bros sing about bunnies if you do it fast enough.

their live act is pretty blah. they opened for spiritualized when i saw them and thankfully i only caught a few songs - they're really boring on stage. haven't heard their album in full, though.
