Oh hey new single:

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 6 June 2013 03:35 (eleven years ago)

Hmm. Sounds sort of like a track someone would stick on the soundtrack to something. Which is to say, I dunno, not an A+ effort. But I'm glad to have him/it back.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 6 June 2013 03:51 (eleven years ago)

Ann Powers just had an AMAZING comment on Twitter: "I think that NIN track feels oddly vegetarian or something"

I support this more techy less abrasive direction (at least for one song).

No surprises from the new song. Enjoyable, brilliantly produced, absolutely nothing new in the melody/lyrics department.

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Thursday, 6 June 2013 10:51 (eleven years ago)

Made it halfway through, couldn't get past the fact that he's using the exact same vocal cadence ("melody" would be too strong a word) as "Somewhat Damaged" (and probably a dozen other songs, but that was the one that stuck in my head).

誤訳侮辱, Thursday, 6 June 2013 13:49 (eleven years ago)

Hesitation Marks is an awful album name, BTW.

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Thursday, 6 June 2013 14:20 (eleven years ago)

I'm being negative. I still reckon this'll be pretty good.

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Thursday, 6 June 2013 14:20 (eleven years ago)

I loved The Slip and have enjoyed the recent non-NIN projects, so my hopes have been actually kinda high, but this sounds like really unexciting more of the same stuff (and not even in 'well maybe they're trying to get a single doing well on rock radio' way).

some dude, Thursday, 6 June 2013 14:21 (eleven years ago)

I loved The Slip too - easily his best post-Downward Spiral album (lots of good songs on The Fragile, but really only one disc's worth at most).

誤訳侮辱, Thursday, 6 June 2013 14:47 (eleven years ago)

Hmmm, I was extremely underwhelmed by the slip.

i feel like this new track would be more impressive if it was an instrumental

precious bonsai children of new york (Jordan), Thursday, 6 June 2013 14:57 (eleven years ago)

Yeah, apart from the vocals it's perfectly good.

No surprises from the new song. Enjoyable, brilliantly produced, absolutely nothing new in the melody/lyrics department.

OTM. I don't really turn to NIN for surprises anymore.

they are either militarists (ugh) or kangaroos (?) (DJP), Thursday, 6 June 2013 15:11 (eleven years ago)

i like most everything about this song but man his vocals sound just kind of weary, but not in any compelling way. my first reaction honestly was "huh i wonder if he's blown his voice out and this is what we get from here on out." guitar tone (for the short time it shows up) is weirdly bland - trent obv needs to stop by my store, i have some pedals that could fix him right up.

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 6 June 2013 15:19 (eleven years ago)

I'd quite like him to write a couple of songs about being rich and happy. I'm sure they'd be awful, but I think the excersize would do him good.

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Thursday, 6 June 2013 15:20 (eleven years ago)

I suggest he start off with one called 'I've got a hot wife and an Oscar'.

lmao this thread

some dude, Thursday, 6 June 2013 17:49 (eleven years ago)

I just watched "Girl with a Dragon Tattoo" the other day, and I thought his score approached (subtle) self-parody at times. It worked really well for "Social Network," but here it was wall-to-wall menacing piano plink-plink, spooky drones and instruments that don't exists (TM).

Davey D, Friday, 7 June 2013 19:22 (eleven years ago)

saw the other day that he wasn't gonna be touring with them so this isn't too surprising right?

thot police (fadanuf4erybody), Friday, 7 June 2013 20:29 (eleven years ago)

reposting my conception of the break:

Trent: Welcome to the team, Adrian.
Adrian: Yeah, this is exciting.

[Trent hands Adrian a box]

Adrian: What's this? A present?!
Trent: No, it's your wardrobe.
Adrian: My wardrobe.
Trent: Yeah.
Adrian: Like, the clothes you want me to wear? On stage?
Trent: Well, not just on stage. Also, in photos and pretty much any time you're out with us in public.
Adrian: So, like, suits?
Trent: Well, more like ... costumes.
Adrian: Costumes?
Trent: Yeah. And make-up.
Adrian: Make-up?
Trent: Yeah. Also, we're going to need to shave off your eyebrows.
Adrian: My ... eyebrows?
Trent: Yeah.
Adrian: You haven't shaved off your eyebrows, Trent.
Trent: It's my band. Don't you want to open up the box?

[Adrian opens the box]

Adrian: This looks like black fishnets and shiny plastic shirts.
Trent: That's right.
Adrian: And you want me to wear this?
Trent: Yep.
Adrian: See you later, sucker.

[Adrian walks out]

Trent (calling after him): Wait, Adrian, don't go!

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 7 June 2013 21:05 (eleven years ago)

That's the opening scene. Most of the rest is told in flashback, then it suddenly jumps to the present, with Belew debuting his new project FLUX while NIN plays to half-empty theaters. It ends with Trent celebrating his birthday alone, blowing out the candles of his cake. CUT TO BLACK.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 7 June 2013 21:07 (eleven years ago)

Lindsay Buckingham is on this! I'll be surprised if this album isn't at least good; it might well be great.

Hope he comes back to SF because I'm not doing Outside Lands to see them.

So this is great. Didn't see that coming.

What is wrong with songs? Absolutely nothing. Songs are great. (DL), Friday, 14 February 2014 10:39 (eleven years ago)

It is good but tbh I could put this on shuffle with all his post Fragile stuff and it would all blend together. I was hoping for a bit of a new direction.

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Friday, 14 February 2014 11:41 (eleven years ago)

It's not like a massive volte face or anything, put this is definitely cleaner and poppier than anything since PHM really.

If Reznor is really concerned about becoming a nostalgia act, going out on a summer coheadlining tour with Soundgarden is nagl.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 17 March 2014 12:05 (eleven years ago)

I mean... he had an out to stop doing NIN and playing old NIN hits nightly, but he went back to it. Touring with other bands who were big in the 90s doesn't make that much of a difference imo.

acluelessdic (some dude), Monday, 17 March 2014 13:49 (eleven years ago)

By all accounts the last NIN tour was awesome and inventive and successful. So why does he need to lazily hitch his wagon to Soundgarden for an outdoor shed tour? This is like the Psychedelic Furs hitting the road with the English Beat.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 17 March 2014 14:24 (eleven years ago)

last Soundgarden reunion tour was a+ tbh. I had all but given up on them. new album kinda blows but i would see them live again happily

plus i mean, NIN toured with Jane's last time or the time before, 90's is kinda how they roll

i see no problem here

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 17 March 2014 15:50 (eleven years ago)

Huh, yeah, I guess. Soundgarden was good last I saw them, had no idea NIN toured with Jane's Addiction.

They should start repackaging past Lolla tours by date. Like, this summer, the complete reunited 1991 Lollapalooza line-up, back for one show!

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 17 March 2014 16:51 (eleven years ago)

they toured with QOTSA in Australia last month

I was kinda hoping they would keep them on the tour.

"Satellite" is definitely the winner for me as an individual song. Still Prince-damaged after all this time (a compliment).

I've actually thought about this. Pretty sure the only person you couldn't convince to go along would be Rollins

I'm still annoyed that apparently the kneejerk reactions to "Everything" scared them off releasing it as a single, love that song, think it woulda sounded great on the radio

Yeah actually everything is good too. Took me a few listens to come round to it though.

I wish they'd made a video for it with Trent frolicking in a meadow, maybe having a go on a trampoline.

the best nin record bc it's so fonky

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 14 July 2022 14:09 (two years ago)

and in a discog full of incredible production, somehow their best-sounding record, every track like sitting in the center of a slow motion three-dimensional swirl of detail

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 14 July 2022 14:10 (two years ago)

revisit this record, it is way more dope than you remember!

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 14 July 2022 14:11 (two years ago)

Might just do that. Satellite has remained in rotation ever since due to aforementioned funkiness

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Thursday, 14 July 2022 14:24 (two years ago)

Ok Brad, I'm doing it. I remember thinking of it as their modular synth album, but looking at the credits I'm curious to hear Pino on bass and Lindsay Buckingham & Adrian Belew on guitar.

Brad, I love it when you bump old ILM threads and describe things so enthusiastically it gets me to dig them out again

it's just yet another solid post-fragile nin album to me idk, plenty to like but not much to love. do appreciate the funk though

ufo, Thursday, 14 July 2022 15:02 (two years ago)

2000s NIN > 1990s NIN all day every day (even Year Zero). This feels like a close #2 for me behind The Slip, but I'll listen to it again happily.

but also fuck you (unperson), Thursday, 14 July 2022 15:03 (two years ago)

It's definitely a pretty funky album, maybe his funkiest since the first one? I (er) hesitate to call it his best because he's never really put out a bad record.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 14 July 2022 15:37 (two years ago)

The funny thing about Pino and Belew is that the former's fretless playing often sounds like a bass synth anyway, and a latter's guitar playing often sounds like a bunch of weird noise, so they are both perfect fits for projects like this.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 14 July 2022 15:39 (two years ago)

Yeah, it's hard to pick out anyone actually playing anything (in a way that couldn't also be a synth or programmed part). But so far "All Time Low" sounds great and I didn't remember it at all.

change display name (Jordan), Thursday, 14 July 2022 15:49 (two years ago)

'Everything' is a cute pop-punk song

change display name (Jordan), Thursday, 14 July 2022 15:58 (two years ago)

'Satellite' is a good Neptunes beat, and I've always loved falsetto Trent.

change display name (Jordan), Thursday, 14 July 2022 16:03 (two years ago)

Satellite is my favourite too from memory. I wish he'd make a whole album of falsetto electro disco numbers which are funky yet sinister.

chap, Thursday, 14 July 2022 17:44 (two years ago)

Listening to Satellite now. What a sick beat!

chap, Thursday, 14 July 2022 17:48 (two years ago)

i love this version of "sanctified" from the pino era:

adam, Thursday, 14 July 2022 17:49 (two years ago)

Now I'm going to have to go back to With Teeth, which I remember as an enjoyable Trent-does-DFA album (with my favorite session playing by Dave Grohl).

'Running' is sick btw, sounds like he was listening to Konono no 1.
