So, what do you think of the new suicide album?

Tobias, Monday, 7 October 2002 10:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I heard one song on the latest Inrocks compilation cd which was ace.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Monday, 7 October 2002 10:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I think it's the first song that reminded me of '90 Tackhead and Infectious Grooves. The rest is better, which isn't saying a whole lot.

Andy K (Andy K), Monday, 7 October 2002 11:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I have reviewed it at length for the next issue of the Wire. Suffice it to say for now that I consider it Suicide's finest work since their debut, indeed may even surpass their debut. It is to 9/11 what Hendrix's "Banner" at Woodstock was to Vietnam. A classic.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 7 October 2002 11:50 (twenty-three years ago)

FUCK!

I guess I should give it more of a chance then.

Andy K (Andy K), Monday, 7 October 2002 11:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Damn, Marcello, that's high praise and a half. Didn't even know it was out. Who released it?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 October 2002 15:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned, read about it @ Suicide

It's not released yet, Oct 28th (UK) Oct 29th (US)

Suicide - American Supreme (Blast First) [part of Mute].

Remember Ned, Marcello gets advance copies of albums to review.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 7 October 2002 16:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, but so I do, young man. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 October 2002 16:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Or so do I, even!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 October 2002 16:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah Ned but "Didn't even know it was out" implies it has already been released, like Andy K sez if only you were to read my weblog ;) you would have known about the Suicide release weeks ago ;)

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 7 October 2002 16:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Weblog? What is that? ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 October 2002 16:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh God....

I was so excited about this, but "American Supreme" has got to be about the worst thing they ever did (and this includes YBBlue)..

Tired techno/dance loops which sound like they've just been ripped from sample CD's with some on the most uninspired vocals...

With all the recent disobey/pan sonic type connections, i would have hoped for a lot more...

destroy...

.... or am i missing something?

Baxter Wingnut, Monday, 7 October 2002 20:25 (twenty-three years ago)

''chello'' huh...i smell a rat here.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 7 October 2002 20:33 (twenty-three years ago)

what?

Baxter Wingnut (Baxter Wingnut), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 07:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I've only listened to like three times so far, and at this point I can say that the vocals are OK but Revs music is, well, dated. Tired soul samples and techno pianoloops. While Vega still manage to sound desperate Rev sounds...dunno...just plain boring. Another Y B Blue? ARE weapons sound more like suicide than the present suicide does!

tobias, Tuesday, 8 October 2002 07:33 (twenty-three years ago)

''what?''

hehe...thought you were someone else under disguise. sorry.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 08:48 (twenty-three years ago)

It's funny because It has the suicide repetative arangements, and vocals, but with a more modern production and lots of samples, record scratching, etc. I like it, but not better than Half Alive, thier first, or second.

A Nairn (moretap), Saturday, 19 October 2002 18:46 (twenty-three years ago)

three weeks pass...
Just got this and I'm less than excited by what I hear. The rubbish use of delay on the vocals on some tracks is one of the biggest misfires.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 02:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic, undoubtedly. And I haven't particularly been a fan up until now. I'd like to see someone drop "American Mean" into a house set in a club.

As of yesterday, Waterstones in BXL still hadn't got in the latest Wire yet, grrr.

Jeff W (Jeff W), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

three years pass...
I just got the 2CD version of "Why Be Blue?", and it's got to the be the strangest remastering of an album I've ever heard. It seems like they just put the original mix through a stereo phaser + reverb, so now it sounds like it's playing in a club and you're staggering around outside listening to it through the window. I hated the album when it came out, but now it sounds great. Funny enough, at the time, I'd wished Alan Vega's voice were put through some effects so you could hear less of the lyrics, and that's the effect you get here. Has anyone else here heard this? Is it, as I'm suggesting, the weirdest remastering ever? Hearing it reminded me why I liked Suicide to begin with.

Pangolino 2, Tuesday, 28 February 2006 19:02 (nineteen years ago)

huh!
i have the orig cd. now, i'm curious...

senseiDancer (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 19:06 (nineteen years ago)

reminds me of this coltrane remaster cd I have where they took the reverb OFF.

senseiDancer (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 19:08 (nineteen years ago)

... that's not possible is it? Technically I mean

Rotatey Diskers With Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 19:10 (nineteen years ago)

maybe for the orginal vinyl they added artifical reverb at the mastering phase?

senseiDancer (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 19:16 (nineteen years ago)

it might be possible to remove the reverb if you know what kind of machine they used to apply it in the first place. reverse-engineer the algorithm into max/msp or pd. hard but doable.

lf (lfam), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 05:38 (nineteen years ago)

I've just put Why Be Blue on to check this out (bought the reissue, hadn't ever played it) and it does indeed have some strange phasing and reverb on it.

It sounds like you're driving round a roundabout with the windows up, in the centre of which is a portable stereo at half volume. IN A GOOD WAY.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 12:24 (nineteen years ago)

Haha, Pump It sounds like the Red Arrows impersonating Suicide. AWESOME.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 12:30 (nineteen years ago)

Cheat Cheat: Vega sounds French at the end, it's so indistinct. Kind of like Marco Neves.
Play The Dream: The Italo-house piano moves from ear to ear. Vega sounds like Barney Sumner.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 12:35 (nineteen years ago)

Mujo: drumming now far more like Steve Morris. Vega very low in the mix.
Chewy Chewy: Vega sounds like he's speaking in tongues. So much reverb on his voice the vocal track is completely full. Vega yelps far more prominent than I remember.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 12:43 (nineteen years ago)

Flashy Love: main riff now sounds like a vocoder. Vega prominent, but so much phasing the backing truck comes in lumps.
Hot Ticket: first real misfire, but I'm not sure whether the song could ever have really been saved. Reverb trowelled on.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 12:50 (nineteen years ago)

Last Time: the reverb accentuates the drone behind this massively and it now sounds like Suicide at last.
Universe: Vega could be reading out a shopping list, there's so much reverb on him here. The backing track sounds like the On-U Sound System.

This really has been incredible. It's now not only a good album, but possibly a great one.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 13:00 (nineteen years ago)

one year passes...

Alan Vega is back !

Listen to a new 2007 track from Alan Vega on myspace: http://www.myspace.com/revega - track: station station

Very interesting, sounds like Cabaret Voltaire and Mark Stewart and the Mafia - dub heavy arty industrial music !

Alan's new album "Station" is released in America on 31st July on Mute USA (mute.com)

djmartian, Monday, 30 July 2007 22:41 (eighteen years ago)

Sounding good. The 'Black Crucifix' track off 'Resurrection River' with Pan Sonic a couple of years back makes me want to catch up with the rest of that as well. (GREAT whistling!)

Soukesian, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 19:23 (eighteen years ago)

NOT A GOOD LOOK

s1ocki, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 19:27 (eighteen years ago)

still dapper motherfuckers after all these years

creme1, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 19:51 (eighteen years ago)

I have reviewed their outfits at length for the next issue of the Wire. Suffice it to say for now that I consider it Suicide's finest fashion statement since their debut, indeed may even surpass their debut. It is to haberdashery what Hendrix's "Banner" at Woodstock was to Vietnam. A classic.
