You've had a couple of months to play now. Has anyone had problems? Anything you'd like changed? Does anything feel a little bit clunky? etc etc

(Anyone caught thanking me will be snuffed out)

why no live chat?

Just a tiny little suggestion concerning the search. It only returns 100 results and it does not seem to be possible to go beyond those 100. Would it be a problem in that case to have a link at the bottom of the results page to the next hundred results and so forth like in most search engines?

The search is truly awesome besides that.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Monday, 7 October 2002 12:23 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't get the search engine to work when my keywords contain an apostrophe.

Underclocked, Monday, 7 October 2002 13:01 (twenty-three years ago)

For no good reason, i tend to logout and back in frequently. Sometimes after I log in, the system asks me for my password again when submitting my first post of the day (so in fact I end up being logged in twice)

Jeff W (Jeff W), Monday, 7 October 2002 13:05 (twenty-three years ago)

(it didn't happen on that occasion)

Also, the read/unread distinction doesn't seem to be as consistent as it used to be on greenspun. A number of threads I have clicked on today are now shown as not read. (This may be a problem at my end of course)

Jeff W (Jeff W), Monday, 7 October 2002 13:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I was too lazy to add paging to the search engine. I'll get on it, and I'll look into the apostrophe problem. The asking for the password thing is a problem with the ilxor.com domain name that'll email the people responsible about to find out what's what. There was a brief period today when I was updating when logging unread messages wasn't working, or have you had it at other times?

Graham (graham), Monday, 7 October 2002 13:13 (twenty-three years ago)

re (un)reads: I'll alert again next time I notice it, Graham. Thanks.

a suggestion and i don't know how feasible -- alex noted the search limit thing -- what i notice is "latest answers -- latest 100" which may go back one day or five days, depending on the number of threads -- would it be possible to have the number of days the user wanted to look back at or the number of threads, ie whichever depending on conditions, yet dependent on preferences ? eg most popular/answered x back for y days ? ie some server friendly permutation of the extent to which past threads viewed could be variable(s) within "settings", maybe tied to no. of threads, no. of days, most popular threads, some user toggle-able variable(s)

it's just that some days can be overwhelming what with new threads being listed that have little activity
the motivation is that i think it shouldn't be the frequency of "news" but the content that determines it's decay rate -- ok threads always staying current largely addresses that, but allowing threads to gestate in peoples' heads over y days can't be a bad thing either -- semi-forgotten threads disappearing at the expense of "the cure"/one-off threads appearing, keeping up with threads at the pace of new ones, that's what i'd make variable using days

all very well in theory, and perhaps i haven't read my settings page properly anyway -- um, that's my suggestion

agree with alex, the search engine is very good, will discourage redundancy the more people use it hopefully

and the ability to scroll over the whole thread while answering, however big the thread, that's very useful for the thread as a whole, and beats the newsgroup format and the greenspun format

.. and i'm trying to be concise -- thank you for making the site so much use/fun -- good hyperlinking/programming wins again

george gosset (gegoss), Monday, 7 October 2002 15:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Alert! I'm logged out currently and this thread was marked unread just now (all but one of the other threads I've clicked on today were still marked as read tho') wtf?

Jeff W, Monday, 7 October 2002 16:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it looks like the login/domain name problem is the result of the setup in joker.com. it's just doing a redirect - the DNS records should ideally be transferred over to wh3rd.net's DNS servers, or at least set up properly at joker.com

michael (michael), Monday, 7 October 2002 16:08 (twenty-three years ago)

They are set up properly. They have both the IP address and the ilx.wh3rd.net address for redierect, and was hoping that ilxor.com would point directly at the server after a few days of propogation. Ocassionally it does work, other times it doesn't I'm not sure what's up.

Graham (graham), Monday, 7 October 2002 16:13 (twenty-three years ago)

If you're logged out, the threads won't be marked read. And also there shouldn't be unread counts on the New Answers page if you're logged out.

Graham (graham), Monday, 7 October 2002 16:14 (twenty-three years ago)

(you mean the threads you read when you were logged in aren't marked read anymore, whereas the threads you read when you were logged out previously will be. Moral: don't be such a ditherer, worrell)

Jeff W, Monday, 7 October 2002 16:33 (twenty-three years ago)

No, if you're not logged in it obviously can't note down that you've read them.

Graham (graham), Monday, 7 October 2002 16:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I've just deleted the ilx.wh3rd.net redirect from Joker.com's records. ilXor.com may stop working at all, or may start working properly, I don't know. ilx.wh3rd.net will always be there for you though.

Graham (graham), Monday, 7 October 2002 16:37 (twenty-three years ago)

ilxor.com has gone funny for me.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 7 October 2002 16:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Funny, as in unusable?

Graham (graham), Monday, 7 October 2002 17:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'not found' eep

I've changed the settings back. Sorry.

Graham (graham), Monday, 7 October 2002 17:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Can the search engine be programmed to make people look better by filtering out only the repetitive and rash posts that they wish they'd never made? =) Pleeease?

Ok, seriously, unless I'm mistaken the search defaults to the 100 earliest results. Would this not be better if it were the 100 most current instead?

vic (vicc13), Monday, 7 October 2002 19:08 (twenty-three years ago)

More search quibbles, you can't search for words under 4 letters, as I just found out.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 01:56 (twenty-three years ago)

The 4 letters thing isn't my fault, it's the database software. You can search for short words if you combine them in quotes with a longer word, eg "in quotes". Search engine paging is on the agenda.

Graham (graham), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 01:58 (twenty-three years ago)

My Spam volume has been cut by abt 90% since the redesign, that is a good thing. It is good stuff.

mt, Tuesday, 8 October 2002 13:31 (twenty-three years ago)

They have both the IP address and the ilx.wh3rd.net address for redierect

Exactly, they're not set up properly, they're redirecting. An nslookup on ilxor.com returns the IP address of the Joker redirect server, whereas it should return the IP address of the server at wh3rd.net that it's on.

michael (michael), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 14:04 (twenty-three years ago)

The four letter word problem is a real bummer when looking for "add n to x". Very common words are ignored as well.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 14:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh for fuck sake Michael. The DNS records for ilxor.com are set up with joker to point to ilx.wh3rd.net. For some reason they quite often don't (sometimes they do). WE ARE NOT STUPID.

(Very common words = appear in more than 50% of messages = not many at all)

Graham (graham), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 14:19 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah i like the idea of the most recent or past or randomised x returns for a search

and i suppose in my previous post i meant run back y theads per z days, or perhaps the threads with above average activity etc., some other variable or setting

george gosset (gegoss), Thursday, 10 October 2002 04:56 (twenty-three years ago)

What's going on with the search? Looking for Itsuki Oshika gives the four letter/common word error message. Strange...

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 15:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Another thing I just noticed. When the submission of a message doesn't work and I get an error message (don't remember what it actually says) and I then want to go back to my message it disappears. The page is reloaded for some reason. I found a workaround by disconnecting myself from the internet and going back. In this way the message is preserved. I guess this is a problem on the ilx side and not of my browser as it didn't use to happen with the old ILM as far as I remember.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 18:53 (twenty-three years ago)

two months pass...
eh?
