how can one make such a choice?

Shock G Mo Collier (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Friday, 14 June 2013 22:29 (twelve years ago)

The one that rap fans actually think of if you call them just "Face"

Do you think about work in original bands (Geto Boys and Wu Tang) in something like this cos that changes the idea somewhat i think. Mind Playing Tricks being an all time classic v a few Wu Tangers too I suppose. This is just a coin flip for me - maybe go with Scarface for MPTOM.

Hinklepicker, Thursday, 20 June 2013 05:43 (twelve years ago)

ghostface. this is primarily a music board right??

Treeship, Thursday, 20 June 2013 06:13 (twelve years ago)

dylannn, Thursday, 20 June 2013 06:30 (twelve years ago)

There is a methodical approach - Geto Boys v. Wu + Scarf v Ghost, but my gut says Brad. But wait, Dennis. I don't know. Brad.

viacom dios, Thursday, 20 June 2013 06:45 (twelve years ago)

face was always on the periphery of a lot of music cloverland thug era dylannnnnnnn was deep into and geto boys was key inspiration for a lot of it but honestly it old scarface, geto boys sounds tame and dated to me even now when a lot of for example old rap-a-lot the more i dig into it, the better it sounds. too much 90s thuglife universalism, less connected to neighborhood politics, less constrained by formal constraints of south rap-- i get it but i'd be the one trying to shut down a geto boys discussion by bringing up street military. my appreciation for face starts around last of a dying breed, balls and my word, the fix, old man rap gravitas on new york records and i've managed to backtrack into his catalogue and appreciate it, dig him popping up on like a ganksta nip track, master p feature, whatever.

stick and stones may break a nigga bones
but when i up chrome, i get a motherfucker gone
shoot patron chased with lemon drop
smoke purple til i'm too high
cryin, vibin to pac (all eyez on me)
done wrong, gon get done wrong
but how i feel and how i live
homeboy, won't fit in one song
free, i know you feel me, daddy
all a nigga know was to get money
and once you got your money niggas stole
cause who knows how shit goes when this shit plays out
rap music brought a nigga paydays without a doubt
but what do you do when it's all said and done
ain't nobody checkin for records and won't nobody come
life goes on
i don't want to be another joke
fifty five doin concerts, relying on the shows

dylannn, Thursday, 20 June 2013 06:54 (twelve years ago)

nah, let's be real. it's gotta be ghostface.

dylannn, Thursday, 20 June 2013 06:59 (twelve years ago)

ha dylann

Shock G Mo Collier (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Thursday, 20 June 2013 14:57 (twelve years ago)

feel like ghost has the broader vocabulary, certainly he gets weirder with his imagery, but both are super emotionally-heavy dudes. scarface may not rhyme about fruits or whatever but he has a direct-ness and an eye for detail that can just rip yr guts out

temporarily embarassed millionaire (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 20 June 2013 15:35 (twelve years ago)

i agree with that. ghostface i guess was also on the periphery of the other key music for me but up north i was always into more conventional rappers from a clear lineage working within carefully defined vociferously defended formal constraints and rap rules. to me, wu was like... meth & red, kinda goofy, that speed racer video, not taking it seriously enough. so, like if we were debating who had the best verse on 'verbal intercourse'-- man, nas killed it! i can quote that line for line, I UNFOLD THE SCROLL PLANT SEEDS TO STAMPEDE THE GLOBE and i got a lot of time for that style of hardly defined bars and overwritten and written over looseleaf paper raps and project hallway realism and it took me a while to come around because part of the appeal of ghostface in a certain mode is exploding those rules, stretching the lengths of lines, varying tempos, constructing intricate lines or couplets that encompass their own little worlds within a verse and have their own internal rhythm, their own layers of language, and using those intricately built bars to build something bigger and more compelling. but never sounding jerkoffy or overthought or joyless or anything but effortless and perfectly natural.

point me to some great scarface storytelling raps
i think i'd give that point to ghost anyday

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Friday, 21 June 2013 18:19 (twelve years ago)

Oh damn, sooo many. Like stated above Ghost is more creative but Face's directness is more affecting. Altho Ghost W Mary is one of the most affecting rap songs ever

Like stated above Ghost is more creative but Face's directness is more affecting.

part of my problem here is I'm not sure which one is more affecting tbh. Ghost's stuff about childhood (Whip Me With A Strap, Child's Play, All That I Got Is You) is so evocative. or the line about the murdered 2yo in Cold Outside is just... damn.

the Spanish Porky's (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 21 June 2013 19:19 (twelve years ago)

Yeah word, I guess I just keep trying to give one the edge up on the other but it's hard.

Shock G Mo Collier (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Saturday, 22 June 2013 21:34 (twelve years ago)

voted Facemob but it was too close to call, gave Scar the edge as he's replied to my tweets, holding out the possibility of him coming to my next b'day party.

Neanderthal, Saturday, 22 June 2013 21:35 (twelve years ago)

I think Ghost's a better writer but I listen to Scarface more. "Never" was like a daily listen for a while there. idk really good contest here

Oral Sex in Sharp’s Ridge Park (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Saturday, 22 June 2013 21:41 (twelve years ago)

I love both pretty equally, feel like I listen to later-era Scarface more than I do later era Ghost though (Emeritus rulz)

Love both but feel like the choice is clear. Which makes me think that Ghost should do an album called "The Ghost is Clear"

tbf, rapper vs. character in a movie is a more provocative pairing.

Treeship, Sunday, 7 July 2013 14:55 (twelve years ago)

technically both were movie characters

Neanderthal, Sunday, 7 July 2013 23:12 (twelve years ago)

I voted Scarface. feel like he had higher highs, plus I go back to his solo albums more often.

Neanderthal, Sunday, 7 July 2013 23:13 (twelve years ago)

And you could never catch me on the block without a strap
And I would never pull it out unless I'm bouts to black
And I could never forget my homies dyin for they scratch
Forever pourin out liquor for em, God send me back

And I'll never shed tears, my heart is like a stone now
Never thought I'd live to see 21, look I'm grown now
Never say never, they tell me all the time
Cuz never means it's forever but it's never crossed my mind

And I'll never go broke, I promise Ima shine
Never come short on my issue, I'm on it every time
And I'll never be past it, you better gimme me mine
It's my money and I want it, every motherfuckin dime

Neanderthal, Sunday, 7 July 2013 23:22 (twelve years ago)

scarface def has higher highs, plus he never fully settled into the complacency ghost seems to find himself in
