Anyone watch this show. And could someone tell me the song or artist that was playing in last nights episode when Furio and Carmella dance. As well as when Tony and Carmella get it on. Help.

(Can I make a joke about The Soprano's being a show about a stressed-out New Jersey greengrocer without seeming like a dick grammar pedant? I just think it's a funny idea.)

You're talking about the fourth series, aren't you? You utter, utter bastards.

am i right in thinking that aside from the very beginning and the very end of the show there's no non-diegetic music ("diegetic sound" = something that has a specific source in the story i.e. car-radio, etc) in the Sopranos, ever?

1st Episode of Season 3 has them switching between "Peter Gunn" and "Every Breath You Take" while the FBI try to sneak into their house to plant a bug.

The show messes with that diegetic shit pretty routinely. In the first episode of the new season, there's that scene with airline stewardesses and drugs at the hotel. It has separate music in the bathroom and the bedroom, and it isn't clear whether there are actual sources for these songs (do mobsters carry boomboxes?), or whether they're just hot-wired into the mood of the characters.

Bookending that same episode, "World Destruction" by Afrika Bambaataa and John Lydon plays over the thoughts of Tony (at the start), and then his nephew (at the close). These guys would never know/hear/hear of this song. But it's perfect for their mental noise, right? This is how they see the world coming down around them. 9/11 and all that. Remember, Quasimodo predicted all this shit.

Sorry, haven't yet seen the episode you mean. A friend tapes them for me...

Mr Noodles I'd forgotten that. It's the exception that proves the rule - that they only use music very deliberately. It's such a welcome contrast to the willy-nilly whatever-deal-we've-made-with-Interscope approach used in other movies etc.

Does Christopher hit on his mom in the first episode??

No, he's smelling her breath for alcohol.

heh okay I remember now - she says "mouthwash" or something and then in a horrible little snap "don't come in here with that SHIT" as she turns to stir the food

That song is "Vesuvio" by Spaccanoli, Simona. Being Italian I know these things (as well as checking the HBO message board).

Spaccanapoli, excuse me.

By the way, the episode guide at www.sopranoland.com often lists what songs are played in each episode.

isn't it Arling & Cameron who coordinate the music for The Sopranos?

a slightly bizarre choice.. with some interesting consequences.

"1st Episode of Season 3 has them switching between "Peter Gunn" and "Every Breath You Take" while the FBI try to sneak into their house to plant a bug."

More than switching, it's actually a sort of mashup, isn't it?
