"Lately there ain't been much work on account of the economy" is the perfect combination of actually moving but also hilariously dumb

ramona & yeezus (some dude), Sunday, 16 June 2013 23:02 (twelve years ago)

otm

still surprised that song won our poll

Euler, Sunday, 16 June 2013 23:11 (twelve years ago)

well it's a great line because it's comparing the shit actual real working people have to go through with the thoughtless news prose bullshit that doesn't effect all of the people who cause that economy to go tits up. 'on account of the economy' is like an act of god - something actual working people can never deal with or fight.

so yeah, deceptively good line.

Jamie_ATP, Sunday, 16 June 2013 23:48 (twelve years ago)

oh that was a terrible sentence. sorry BROOCE.

me too, ftr

ramona & yeezus (some dude), Tuesday, 18 June 2013 18:28 (twelve years ago)

feel like it's an easily regurgitatible soundbite from pundits that an unemployed person from the 80s would use in a bar as an oversimplified excuse. and it's the way he sort of belts the line with extra drama that sells it with irony

ty based gay dead computer god (zachlyon), Tuesday, 18 June 2013 18:30 (twelve years ago)

or at least it's something an imaginary bruce working class gentleman would use

i think a more pointed and poignant line about that shadowy scapegoat known as "the economy" is "hiring man said 'son if it was up to me.'" it's saying the same thing as the line in "the river," but this time there's someone actually saying it rather than it just being so. it's a human moment and it's delivered nonjudgmentally. should we be angry at the hiring man, or should we feel sorry for him too?

seven years pass...

Was emailing with a friend of mine in France and mentioned that I'm looking for a teaching job but don't expect to find one for next year because hardly any jobs are being posted. She just emailed back to ask why, and honestly the best I can do is, "Uh, idk, the economy?"
