What music do you love?

This is pretty basic, but what albums/artist do you think are really really good, and maybe me (or other people) should go listen to them?

A Nairn (moretap), Monday, 7 October 2002 19:04 (twenty-three years ago)

most of the stuff I could write about would be pretty typical, and my writing would pale in comparison to the writing of others who like the same records (what could I say about "loveless", for instance?).
Some records that make me very happy that are never mentioned are...
Jazz:
Pete LaRoca Sims "Turkish Women at the Bath" (Eastern sounds)
Lee Morgan "Search for the New Land" (Similar mystical feeling)
House"
Mod Wheel "The Way" (Ronan you will love this one from 1997 by Tom Middleton)
Moodymann "The Dance (DJ Tonka remix)" The original is more "avant-garde", the Tonka remix is pure piano-house.
Oh and nobody has mentioned these labels: Schatrax, Plastic City, Combustible, Adult Only.
As for indie I can't think of anything right now.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Monday, 7 October 2002 19:15 (twenty-three years ago)

David Bowie. I won't date anyone who can't listen to Bowie. Pick an album, I tell em, or I'll kick you to the curb.

Everything else is pretty negotiable and subject to my own moods.

Boa Morte - "Soon it will Come Time to face the World Outside"
Beachwood Sparks - "Make the Robot Cowboys Cry"

You'd all have most stuff I'd suggest, but these are ignored on ILM.

That it's a life-changing experience that gives a vision to a greater universe? For example. :-)

If we're going to invoke B*******d S****s, let's talk the Walkabouts for a nice long time.

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Monday, 7 October 2002 21:42 (twenty-three years ago)

oh Ned I all I meant is that I couldn't be as eloquent as that! You proved my point with your post, silly!

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Monday, 7 October 2002 22:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I could go on about Star Time or Discovery or Entroducing or Since I Left You or Follow the Leader (that's Eric B. and Rakim, not KoRn) or Dig Your Own Hole or London Calling or Boom Selection Issue 01 or Paul's Boutique or Fun House or Stickyfingers or De La Soul is Dead or Giant Steps or Supermodified or The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan or Stankonia or better yet ramble on about Radios Appear for the hundredth time, but to be honest the one thing that I can say with full confidence is that the one thing I have heard most recently that makes me glad to have ears, to be alive, to know what music is like, is Eddie Hazel's cover of "California Dreaming". A simple, sort of sighing bit of nice-enough la-la-la pop is transformed into the pinnacle of all things tragic and heavy-hearted about funk, all the soul-wrenching beauty of "Maggot Brain" with the added attraction of Hazel's voice itself, haunting in its intensity and sadness.

blueski, Tuesday, 8 October 2002 10:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll be honest; I can't name 500 uber cool acts that speak to me at any given moment. There are only a handful of records at any given time that I feel deeply. Here are the records that are churning my butter at the moment:

The Golden Dream Of Hank Williams: Hank Williams

A cheap k-tel style comp put out by Candle Light Music in the late 70's. I bought this record at a garage sale for a buck. Settin' The Woods On Fire is really doing it for me.

Johnny Cash's Greatest Hits Vol. 1: Johnny Cash

Another comp bought for a buck at the garage sale mentioned above. Understand Your Man, Folsom Prison Blues, and I Walk The Line are getting a lot of play. I am noticing that I cannot get through an entire LP side anymore. I need to start making mix tapes.

Various tracks: Soledad Brothers

Johnny Walker is Jack White's Housemate in Southwest Detroit, and he is 1/2 to 1/3 of the Soledad Brothers. They are just about my favorite Detroit group at the moment. Shaky Puddin from the Sympathetic Sounds Of Detroit Comp, and Sugar And Spice from the Italy 7" are getting a lot of play at the moment.

The Fats Domino Story Vol.3: Fats Domino

Sweet Lord Jesus, I love Fats Domino! Blue Monday is the first song I listen to every day. On Sunday I gets my rest, because Monday sho' is a mess. I don't think a better couplet has ever been written.

There are others, the Jr. Walker And The All-Stars, and Martha And The Vandellas Motown Anthologies are getting quite a bit of play as well. The first Wire album is getting a good chunk of play as well. That is about it really, for now at least.

My favourite pop album for ages was Haircut 100's Pelican West. Don't think I've ever heard anyone else heap praise on this wonderful record.
Other stuff that maybe doesn't get recommended enough: Big Star: #1 Record/ Radio City, Teenage Fanclub: Bandwagonesque, Boo Radleys: Giant Steps, Duran Duran: Decade, Throwing Muses: The Real Ramona, X-Ray Spex's first album, Simple Minds: New Gold Dream, Orange Juice: Orange Juice, The Posies: Frosting on the Beater, the Sugarcubes' 1st and third albums, Echo and the Bunnymen: Crocodiles.
Plus I despair of anyone who hasn't heard the Pixies, but jealous of anyone about to discover them for the first time. Try Surfer Rosa/ Come on Pilgrim or Doolittle first.

Skeleton Key - Fantastic Spikes Through Balloons

Yes! Yes! YES! And in this vein Soul Coughing (Ruby Vroom if you're just going to have one), dEUS, Firewater, and New Wet Kojak.

I don't hate you if you're not swept away by the Afghan Whigs' Gentlemen and Black Love, but I'd like to hear why.

Arthur (Arthur), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 13:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Ooh. Last one. "I Feel Insane," the first song on Daisy Chainsaw's ELEVENTEEN album might very well be the best song *EVER* recorded (shitting from a great, splattery height on your precious Stevie Wonders and your Bob Dylans).

...or not, but it certainly conjures that impression in my head when I hear it.
