Sad to hear. I've been reading his stuff on the Rolling Stone DVDs. He did a tremendous piece/reporting job on the 1979 Who Cincinnati tragedy.

Aw. I heard he was a real sweetheart too. His Hank Williams bio was great. Plus, Chet Flippo is one of the all-time great music writer names.

Also a key component in Doug Sahm and Willie Nelson getting signed to Atlantic.

Just posted this to my fb, the conclusion of his notes to the Rhino Doug Sahm best of:
"I once asked Doug to define his musical landscape for me, the mythical and magical land he refers to as his "Texas Groove." This is how I understood the land of Texas Groove: It's full of righteous barbecue joints and Mexican food restaurants and jumping music clubs populated by soulful cats and spiritual chicks. Every day is payday and every night is Saturday night. And the music goes on forever."

His skeptical McCartney bio was a favorite of mine when younger.

Reading Flippo's piece, I saw a bizarre Jann Wenner column linked at the bottom, in which he takes Dave Marsh and Greil Marcus to task for not loving the Stones and Dylan as much as he.

Wenner finally wised up and wrote the Goddess In The Doorway review himself. Five stars, of course.

this is fun - also always a lol to be reminded of how long people have been complaining about how old the Stones are (ie, basically since before I was born)

rip. read his mccartney book years ago, don't remember it too well except that it was a bit irreverent.

And then came the day in 1975, when I sent Chet the galleys of his RS Interview with squeaky-clean John Denver. The phone rang.Chet: "Why did you take out the word 'fuck?'"Me: "I didn't. There were hardly any expletives. It's John Denver!"Chet: "He said it! Check the transcripts."I went to the fact-checkers and got a copy of the transcripts. They were the rawest transcripts I had ever seen. Chet didn't draw Xs through paragraphs or cut line by line. He took what looked like a Number One pencil, soft leaded, and obliterated entire pages with a series of whorls that looked like two-dimensional tumbleweed. I spent about an hour poring over the pages, going cross-eyed, when I suddenly spotted a tiny "fuck" peeking through a tornado of whirls. When I determined that it had actually come from Denver's mouth, we decided where to place it, satisfied that we'd show the world a G-rated folk singer could swear like a sailor on shore leave.
