I live in Rhode Island.
I am 21 years old.
I am a computer programmer and student on hiatus.
My musical taste focuses mainly on indepedent rock from around 1977 onward; to be overly general.

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 00:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Welcome to us. :-) There are a couple of other intro threads around, read up on them to discover who the hell we all are. ;-)

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 00:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I kept reading your intro thinking "but he wasn't even born til 1981!!!!!". But then I'm stoned.

Still, though, you should check out '60s indie. teh best.

Aaron A., Tuesday, 8 October 2002 01:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Aaron, I'm open to suggestions.

I think I have some killing joke mp3s, but I need to explore them more.

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 02:18 (twenty-two years ago)

regarding Jess' commentary:

I thought my introduction made it perfectly clear that I was aware of how many people share my general taste.

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 11:25 (twenty-two years ago)

joan vich (joan vich), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 11:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I suppose I could list some fascinating facts about myself:

- I was king of the circus when I was ~5.
- I was in a band called the Hives. Ha ha.
- I run Linux at home and have for 5 years.
- I mountain bike.
- I like noise. I play noise.
- I punched the lead singer of Sum 41 once.

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 12:02 (twenty-two years ago)

...let's hope you do it again.

g.cannon (gcannon), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Hi Jonathan. I'm Rockist Scientist and I especially like salsa monga, Anglophone 70's pop (in other words, the music I grew up with as a kid in elementary school), Arabic oldies, and Sun Ra; but I like a lot of other stuff as well. I'm 36.

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 8 October 2002 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I've heard of this Sun Ra stuff. Tell me about it!

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 13:12 (twenty-two years ago)

You punched that clown from Sum 41? Outstanding.

Back at you:

- I love Killing Joke. So should you, dammit!
- I once had dinner with Rush, and they're cheap, boring and quiet guys.
- Many men my age have a receding hairline, but I have an advancing one, which is just as disconcerting.
- I'm married and am poised dangerously on the threshold of fatherhood.
- I once broke up with a girl I was fleetingly dating because of the cover art of Celtic Frost's TO MEGA THERION. No regrets about it, either.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 13:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Killing Joke sounded pretty good to me when I was about 13 or 14, but their appeal has slowly faded over the years.

Jonathan, do you know anything about Sun Ra already? I think I will revive the Sun Ra: C or D thread instead.

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 8 October 2002 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Has anyone heard the Celtic Frost cover of "Mexican Radio?" How about the Polvo cover?

I'll check out that Sun Ra thread.

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Mark....how did you get my passport photo, you treacherous knave you!

Celtic Frost's "Mexican Radio" cover is brilliant....but don't bother listening for any actual sonic affinity to the Wall of Voodoo original.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

My name is Chewshabadoo, really, it is!

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

hi jonathan,

in a reaction to the over-representation of indie music on the internet, you may find that this site fronts an attitude of indie-backlash and pop-supremacy. This thread about indie apologists is a good introduction to this phenomenon.

i once accused jess of having indie guilt but then again, he keeps promising some Gravity records overview which sounds particularly tasty so i'm gonna keep bugging him about it every week until he decides to run it himself because the person who he keeps bugging to run it seems more rooted in more conservative (ie, safer) musics.

gygax!, Wednesday, 9 October 2002 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I work with one of said people. He runs an really small Indie label.

Wanna play 20 questions and guess the label? :)

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 9 October 2002 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I like genre music.

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 11 October 2002 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

It's the best kind, RS.

These intro threads have been made redundant by the links to profiles, surely?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 12 October 2002 11:21 (twenty-two years ago)

If the Gravity recs thing is Jess' hardcore article then it's running tomorrow. I've been busy on other stuff.

Tom (Groke), Saturday, 12 October 2002 11:25 (twenty-two years ago)
