Cyrus is quick to point out that, having left one bandwagon, she's not about to jump on another. "I've always wanted country-rock influences, but now I'm moving over to a more urban side," she says. "It's not a hip-hop album, though-it's a pop album. I'm not coming in trying to rap. It's more like, 'I don't see any girls out there doing what Miguel and Frank Ocean are doing.'" Cyrus pauses, giggling. "We've been calling it 'count-step,' because it's like country, dubstep and a little trap," she says. "I love the Lumineers, but I also love French Montana, Juicy J, Wiz Khalifa and Dolly Parton. If you could put Dolly, some Adele and Juicy J together, you'd have that weird balance."

you people. "I'm moving to a more urban sound" is literally the same line every Disney/teenpop/boy band/girl band singer in history has given when promo-ing their solo work. it is as cliched as "it's our best album yet."

put another way: I don't like Miley's new single at all but there is no way she isn't receiving a disproportionate amount of shit because "Miley Cyrus" is still a punchline.

i dunno. a couple years ago Demi Lovato had that line and had some awkward Timbaland club songs on her album, but there was no twerking w/ Juicy J or whatever. even Britney working with the Neptunes back in the day was kind of polite and dignified in comparison to what Miley's doing.

some dude, Friday, 21 June 2013 00:42 (twelve years ago)

So this is what you guys were talking about when you wanted to name the rolling rap thread "nurse ratchet"?

how's life, Friday, 21 June 2013 00:54 (twelve years ago)

even Britney working with the Neptunes back in the day was kind of polite and dignified in comparison to what Miley's doing.

i don't think the difference between this video and "i'm a slave 4 u" is that the latter is "polite and dignified" when britney was in the middle of a fucking orgy in that clip

da croupier, Friday, 21 June 2013 01:38 (twelve years ago)

there's nothing undignified about orgies, necessarily. there is something undignified about that miley video, especially wrt the way she tries to incorporate elements of hip hop culture and imagery.

Treeship, Friday, 21 June 2013 01:39 (twelve years ago)

have you seen the "i'm a slave 4 u" video

da croupier, Friday, 21 June 2013 01:40 (twelve years ago)

the better touchstone for miley is obv xtina's "dirrty" tho, both were going for that LOOK A FURRY thing rather than just sweaty humpa pumpa

da croupier, Friday, 21 June 2013 01:41 (twelve years ago)

also if we're going to talk about a short-haired white lady in a white tank top incorporating elements of hip hop culture and imagery we should probably acknowledge gwen stefani.

da croupier, Friday, 21 June 2013 01:56 (twelve years ago)

gwen pulls it off better. the reason this doesn't work isn't so much about cultural appropriation -- which is a fraught issue i don't want to get into bc i am not sure what my feelings are, really, on that topic as a whole -- as it as about the fact that the hip hop stuff seems lame and forced.

Treeship, Friday, 21 June 2013 01:59 (twelve years ago)

britney and xtina similarly had swagger and stage presence. miley lacks charisma.

Treeship, Friday, 21 June 2013 01:59 (twelve years ago)

oh yeah it's definitely less spirited than xtina or gwen's forays

da croupier, Friday, 21 June 2013 02:01 (twelve years ago)

i like the artier, surrealisty elements of that video sort of. although i don't really understand why miley cyrus is a pop star. that sounds harsh, but i don't think there is anything distinctive or compelling about her.

Treeship, Friday, 21 June 2013 02:05 (twelve years ago)

for some reason i have trouble picturing people playing this song at their high school parties or whatever. maybe it'll be background music for the next morning when they're all hungover, cleaning up broken beer bottles and vomit or something.

dyl, Friday, 21 June 2013 02:24 (twelve years ago)

the kids still listen to broken english for that.

Treeship, Friday, 21 June 2013 02:25 (twelve years ago)

welltris (crüt), Friday, 4 September 2015 20:02 (ten years ago)

"It's both of them that is making it all about Nicki. She is just saying something is wrong here."

Um, Adam, Nicki did make it about her, as well as the bigger issue, from the off, specifically mentioning the Anaconda video. And the last two winners of best video were Miley and Taylor so if she didn't mean them who did she mean? The broader point stands but there was nothing selfless about it. She's a pop star pissed off about being snubbed - everything else she said stemmed from that.

Pretty sure she mixed up Kendrick and Rocky though, which is ugh.

how's life, Friday, 4 September 2015 23:04 (ten years ago)

She might have mixed up Kendrick and Asap but honestly, her point stands. Miley making songs about acid is treated differently from male artists making songs about acid. She's an incredibly easy target right now but there's no reason to bury her point about gender under the Miley is rascist lead.

longneck, Friday, 4 September 2015 23:54 (ten years ago)

There's levels to this

Spottie, Saturday, 5 September 2015 00:14 (ten years ago)

Her awkwardness is not there, the new album is not psych or crazy or weird or anything it sounds like very safe and boring (stoned/spaced out) pop music. I made it til halfway through "Space Boots" before realizing it was just going to be this safe coffee house friendly music with the occasional line about weed and a viral marketing campaign. It sounds like a decent lofi attempt at pop but it is not weird or strange. Even compared to her pop contemporaries (esp Nicki Minaj).

― AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, September 4, 2015 11:20 AM (9 hours ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

^^^ this is exactly what I like about this record (except it's not really lofi at all, just has that aesthetic). I have been playing it in the background, it's relaxing and pretty, but not like wallpaper because every now and then there's a kinda clever lyric or production touch I can admire before going back to what I was doing.

i would say this cuts both ways, and more in her favor than against -- the day after the VMAs, there were all these stupid "Kanye admits to smoking pot before the show" headlines, which of course were contrasted with no headlines about Miley referencing pot all damn night.

Thanks for linking to that review. It's the first one I've read that actually engages with the music. Over the past few days, I've fallen in love with this music. It's a vanity project in the best sense and I don't understand how that's suppose to be a criticism of her. I never even liked the Flaming lips much but the ballads on have won me over.

JacobSanders, Monday, 7 September 2015 04:00 (ten years ago)

Black males really get a free pass with drugs from America, Mikey, great point

Does it ever occur to her that Asap & Kendrick might have grown up in places where there was more at stake than getting criticized on Twitter?

Ma$e-en-scène (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 7 September 2015 04:02 (ten years ago)

In general terms I'd say you were right but ASAP Rocky rapping about LSD comes off as a fashion statement. If there's more at stake for him it's lost on me.

longneck, Monday, 7 September 2015 07:24 (ten years ago)

Asap has a ton at stake that she will never have every day of his life, because his dad is not Billy Ray Cyrus and he wasn't born rich

Ma$e-en-scène (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 7 September 2015 12:11 (ten years ago)

She can fuck around and "rebel" with Wayne and it doesn't really matter

Ma$e-en-scène (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 7 September 2015 12:11 (ten years ago)

So her (musical) rebellion will never count because she was born into money? And A$AP's shitty music will always matter because he was born poor? I'm not even saying Dead Petz is all that but this doesn't sound quite right.

longneck, Monday, 7 September 2015 12:59 (ten years ago)

No, but don't sit there and talk about boo hoo these guys get all the breaks they can really about drugs and no one gets mad life is so unfair & ignore the lives you and they have had, it's fucking gross

Ma$e-en-scène (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 7 September 2015 13:01 (ten years ago)

And if we've decided this mess is better than asap and Kendrick I missed the memo

Ma$e-en-scène (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 7 September 2015 13:02 (ten years ago)

Do we have to treat Kendrick and A$AP as one entity though? Kendrick is obviously leagues beyond almost everyone else these days. The A$AP album was DOA to me, as in there's no life in it. Dead Petz is a mess but I still vastly prefer a handful of Dead Petz songs to all of the empty vessel A$AP album.

Oh!

Miley Cyrus was sued for $300 million on Tuesday by Jamaican songwriter Michael May, who claims the singer’s 2013 hit “We Can’t Stop” infringes upon the a song he released in 1988 called “We Run Things,” according to Reuters.

Cyrus is one of several writers credited on the song, along with coproducers Mike Williams (a.k.a. Mike Will Made It), Pierre Slaughter (a.k.a. P-Nasty) and Theron and Timothy Thomas (a.k.a. Rock City), along with sampled or interpolated contributions from rappers Douglas Davis (a.k.a. Doug E. Fresh) and Ricky Walters (a.k.a. Slick Rick).
