We listened to the The Stonemans' All in the Family and The Late Great Townes van Zandt in the car yesterday. Asked my wife if she could tell they largely share a producer. She said not really.
I need knowledge, wisdom, expertise of others, please, re: the Jack Clement sound.

Misread for a second and thought this was an RIP thread. Other than that don't know enough to tell you anything, still got him filed under Topics for Further Investigation.

iirc, he was the guy who actually produced Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash at Sun. Also, after a hilarious drug-fueled mishap, handled the controls for Waylon Jennings' Dreaming My Dreams album.

Wrote a few hit tunes for those guys as well, iirc.

I'm not sure how thorough or accurate it is, but there's a list of his production credits on allmusic. of those, I'd highly recommend Elementary Doctor Watson by Doc Watson. Gum Tree Canoe by John Hartford is ok, but it lacks the humor and looseness of his best work. it's like a pop-country producer was trying to record a bluegrass band without really understanding the dynamics of the music. I haven't heard enough of Jack Clement's productions to know if he has a signature sound.

The wiki for Late Great Townes lists two producers, Clement and Kevin Eggers. Is Clement responsible for that dusty, sprawling sound on Pancho & Lefty? I adore the production on that one but honestly don't know how much of that is him.
