"Golden Years" by David Bowie
Whenever it comes on I'm like huh, I love this, what's it on, Them Or Us?

Also, the very end of "Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)"
Steve Vai - Flex-able. No shit, this is genuinely a really good Zappa-esque album, probably better than what FZ himself was doing at this time. Nothing like Malmsteem or even Satriani. I think solo Vai went in that direction later on.

I dunno, I'm no Zappa expert (or even novice), I own a copy of "Freak Out" and that's it.

"Golden Years" does sound a lot like Zappa, you're right, although I never thought of that before! I mean, I think he was going for more of a funk/soul pastiche but it ends up coming out closer to Zappa's own pastiches than to actual funk/soul.

Just noticed the other day, this 1966 film theme has a few orchestral timbres that remind me of Zappa circa Uncle Meat.

Although since Kaleidoscope predates Uncle Meat by a couple years, maybe "faux Zappa" isn't quite the right term here, or else we'd be posting Varese clips all day...

This Fireballet cut is totally faux-Z. I started a thread about them once that went nowhere.
