In The Nursery: how to buy?

I started with L'Esprit, it seemed the closest thing to a safe crowdpleaser for an obscure band like this and I loved it, it had some spectacular imagery in it. But they have a large output and I'm not sure where to go from there.

Stormhorse! And the singles comp Counterpoint. The Twins LP is not so hot. Jeez, they have tons of stuff now! I only know them up to the early 90's.

And after that a SLEW of great stuff. I've done just about all the reviews of them in the AMG, so that might help a bit. Off the top of my head (generally echoing sleeve), Sense and Duality as a paired set, nearly all their silent film soundtracks, Deco, Lingua and Blind Sound are worth the exploring. And I'm not kidding at all about the silent film soundtracks -- they've done something like six or seven and they're all excellent.

two years pass...

I'm really enjoying Twins; L'Esprit not so much. That big, orchestral industrial thing just sounds like one guy with a Casio hitting Orchestra Stab over and over to me. Twins has an idiosyncratic industrial/something wave sound I find kind of charming.

I still haven't bought anything since L'Esprit. Next time I'm buying albums I think I'll get a bunch of these.

Don't really know much about these goofs but picked up Counterpoint today for two quid. From the cover I would guess they're the midpoint between 4AD and Nitzer Ebb - am I close?

Not much like Nitzer Ebb.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Saturday, 26 September 2015 17:22 (ten years ago)

that's okay by me!

Haha they have radically changed since those days, much more 4AD leaning in the classic sense, but not really -- shifted from imaginary soundtracks to actual soundtracks. They've done a slew of commissioned soundtracks for silent movies, plus continuing with their own work. Their latest is a soundtrack for an early Poe adaptation; either out or about to be released. Great guys, met 'em both.

(I see I said as much two years ago, but just to restate!)
