on friday at the tribal sessions birthday party in manchester francois kervorkian played just about the best set i've ever heard in a club. the crowd was grebt, the sound was out of this world, f.k. fucked about with the f.x. until it sounded like the music was bouncing around from every corner of the club into your head and back, every slight nuance enunciated intensely. at the end he even gave a speech telling everyone what an amazing night he'd had. then the whole club sang happy birthday and he dropped 'pacific state'. wow. tunes i can remember:
maurizio - m4
u.r. - transition
c.l.s. - can you feel it?
jam & spoon - stella
inner city - big fun (remix)
octave one - blackwater
jeff mills - the bells
red planet - ultraviolet images
aztec mystic - jaguar (remix)
georgio moroder - theme from midnight express
aphrohead - in the dark (dave clark remix)
microworld - signals
808 state - pacific state.
had these swimming around my head and a semi-insane grin on my face all saturday. ronan, who did you choose to go and see in the end? what did everyone else do at t'weekend and did you have a good time?

Shh! Don't ask Ronan!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 09:46 (twenty-three years ago)

sounds great Michael ('Pacific State' is usually my favourite track of all time), wish i'd been there instead of at home with a badly bruised foot (no dancin for me :(

this weekend looks better - We Got Westway this Friday night at Subteranea, probably the only decent club night in West London unless anyone else knows better...?

it's interesting to notice how François has put the emphasis back on a more techno related sound in his recent sets...

i'm sure his set was great (as he is a true master behind the decks, no doubts there)
but looking at this playlist i feel he played a kinda "old skool greatest hits" set which i would find rather dissapointing, lacking surprises
but then again i don't know how long he played and maybe the surprises are not mentioned in this list so i wished i could have been there nevertheless :-)

Well on Saturday at 7pm my friend rang me to say he couldn't hack coming out and was tired. Then on Sunday at the same time he rang again. I forgive him since this is the first time he's ever ever ever not come out to anything and I was more worried than annoyed. I went out on Sunday to a new night another friend is starting, it was very good in the end, I met Andrew there and he was lucky that he left early because later the Bangles were played.

The rest of the music was cool. I've made a half decision that since I took one week off drugs this past Saturday, and it's a mates 21st the coming Saturday, I might as well give up for a while. Like another 2 weeks! I'd been having loads of nightmares and scarily one night I was waking up and falling asleep so many times the gap between dreams and reality became blurred and I had to go and watch TV for an hour to calm myself down.

My enthusiasm, unlike my seratonin, will never die. Dave Clarke in about 3 weeks is tempting.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 15:28 (twenty-three years ago)

johan, he played for 4 hours so there was plenty of stuff i'd never heard before. you're right about him being a 'true master' of the decks. sankey's has a phazon sound system which, i get the impression, is regarded as just about the best in the country. f.k., on his first encounter with it, twerked, probed and explored the fucker like no one before.

ronan, you've just got to hit that plateau, man! and forget talk of giving it up, it'll never happen.

michael wells (michael w.), Wednesday, 9 October 2002 10:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh I'm still loving the nights out, lots of plateau! Just want a bit more and less of the nightmares. Dave Clarke in a few weeks is my target night out.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 9 October 2002 13:14 (twenty-three years ago)

4 hours: i wish i could have been there...

He knows Phazon alright.
It was installed when Vinyl became Arc (the venue where they Body & Soul was held) so he played on it a for a few weeks before they decided to stop having Body & Soul there.
What i understand was that there were some complaints about that soundsystem (by FK but also by Danny Tenaglia who plays/played there on fridays) but maybe this was only because they still had to properly install it, i lack technical knowledge about this kinda stuff.

If you're interested in that kindastuff
google "Top Ten ways to improve the sound in your club"
and you'll find his top 10 ways to..

Anyone else remember the time Maurizio posted to the Greenspun ILM? That was cool (even if I was dissing one of his tracks at the time).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 9 October 2002 20:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Maurizio Van Oswald posted to ILM?

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 9 October 2002 21:03 (twenty-three years ago)

and you dissed one of his tracks?

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 10 October 2002 07:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Last night I had about 8 pints and then went to a techno night and broke my diet of no pills, oh well, it was fucking amazing. Anyway I'm still keeping off stuff a bit.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 10 October 2002 07:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Highlight of the night, DJ plays Dark and Long (Dark Train) and my mate runs up to the DJ box, "I HATE DANCE MUSIC, I HATE GOING OUT EVERY WEEKEND, I HATE TALKING TO THE DJS, I HATE DANCING, OH WOW I HATE IT ALL SO MUCH, BRILLIANT!"

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 10 October 2002 07:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyway I'm still keeping off stuff a bit.

Just every *other* night, then?

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 10 October 2002 08:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I was actually talking to this guy last night whom I hadn't seen in ages, and he said "no I'm in final year now, I'm off them all together". "well I've cut down to just doing them at weekends anyway". Er.....what?

I don't think I was ever as drunk popping as I was last night, I can remember bounding around the club to Dark Train as if there were 3000 people there instead of the 500 or so.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 10 October 2002 08:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I met Andrew there and he was lucky that he left early because later the Bangles were played.

Razzinfrazzin...
