Post-Bop / Pre-Fusion Recommendations, or, Help me find my Chick Corea album

My jam(s):

Red Clay and Straight Life by Freddie Hubbard
Power to the People by Joe Henderson
all the Mwandishi-era Herbie albums
In A Silent Way (duh)

Where to from here? Obviously I'm talking albums with lotsa Fender Rhodes, maybe electric bass...that brief intersection where 'electric' and 'fusion' didn't mean rock drumming and squealing guitar solos. The sorta stuff CTI put out before they got bad. I bet there is a STUNNER of a Chick Corea album out there for me, but hell if I know what it is. Or maybe a Joe Zawinul LP I'm missing? Did George Benson make any good records in this style? Help me out, jazzbos, yr my only hope!

Joe Zawinul - Zawinul

Thanks! The only one of these I know is Fille de Kilimanjaro. Always suspected there was a Zawinul album I should hear, and the Eddie Henderson recommendation makes sense, given how much I love Mwandishi. I think I owned that Woody Shaw album at one point but can't say I remember ever listening to it! Great tips here, gang, thanks.

You definitely need to hear Herbie Hancock's soundtrack to The Spook Who Sat By The Door, too; it's a lost Mwandishi record. Also Buster Williams' Pinnacle (though that gets a little '70s at times) and Weather Report's Live in Tokyo is much more like the debut than anything after.

Just bought Pinnacle - thanks! What Chick Corea should I hear? I don't mean the RTF stuff, I mean solo / bandleader, preferably with a Rhodes as opposed to an acoustic piano (Ive heard a few of the acoustic trio albums). Yall haven't let me down so far!

For non-RTF Chick, I like that Circle Paris Concert album a lot, but that's acoustic...

...after swearing off electric piano after Miles, not sure why he went back in '73 for this one album.

Sanford, Saturday, 6 July 2013 18:52 (twelve years ago)

yeah that's a great album

I never checked out the first Weather Report before. As much as I like their later material, this is quite different and really pretty great, up there with Hancock and electric Miles, probably.

that's an interesting 60s/70s album list on the kosmigroov thread

Lots of good suggestions here ... another in the same vein:

Wayne Shorter - Super Nova

Brad C., Sunday, 7 July 2013 19:36 (twelve years ago)

Super Nova cannot be fucked with. It's a shame Shorter never really returned to that well (and by "well" I mean Sonny Sharrock).

Also, fun fact: Chick Corea's first band, in the early 60s, was a Latin jazz combo with Milford Graves.

It was mentioned on that Kozmigroove thread, but Julian Preister's "Love Love" album is really great. Seventies Terje Rypdal lp's I've heard inhabit this zone nicely sometimes.

there's a link in that thread to this list which is a good resource
