haven't heard the Havoc yet. picked up the Styles P yesterday since I love all his stuff, and like it a lot.

around the time, a.w.o.l. came out, az was making statements something like: if i don't come out with a smash, it's time to hang it up. my understanding of music business politics and finances is limited but even in 2005, it was pretty clear that album sales weren't ever going to be the same, regional rap markets were never going to be the same, radio was never going to be the same, and a.w.o.l. was a minor success and broke the billboard 200 but that was about all that could be expected and it would probably be the peak.

same time, when established rappers said fuck it and dropped an album on koch, it was a punchline. it looked desperate to put out mixtapes that should have been part of the hype cycle for a big album because there wasn't such a thing as big albums or omnipresent big radio hits getting a major label push. so, when the albums finally came, they were disconnected from the reality of what dropping an album meant, lots of radio records that would never get on radio with big producer beats that shouldn't have been in the budget, mixtape griminess replaced with cassidy guest spots.

after all the grinding and the radio records and trying to put out another bad boy-financed lox album and g-unit tattoos and summer jam beef, styles and havoc and az have ended up at about the same place, ra the rugged man labelmates dropping hard, focused albums for underground heads and 90s rap nostalgics.

the havoc album is my choice: frozen soul sample loop choirs and shushing buzzing synths and sinister piano highlights, havoc on some personal confessional sick of the game type super conventional raps that never descend into the stomachturning fucked up zone that prodigy goes to and more compelling than styles' summer of 98 nostalgia and coke chopping imagery that sounds hollow coming from a 45 year old rapper in 2013.

dylannn i've often wondered if you have listened to or enjoyed the first Boldy James album.

wrist game colder than an oreo blizzard

dylannn, Tuesday, 2 July 2013 08:09 (twelve years ago)

i did enjoy the first boldy james album. the fader/pitchfork attention kinda put me off recently but i'm never not going to rep for authentic dope game raps + monotone voice.

I really love "Tell Me to My Face"

Neanderthal, Sunday, 7 July 2013 13:50 (twelve years ago)

d-40, i'm sure you're cool, didn't really notice your stuff. it's just i had problems with this david drake guy in the past.

dylannn, Sunday, 7 July 2013 16:19 (twelve years ago)

steer clear of him at the fader christmas party.

dylannn, Sunday, 7 July 2013 16:20 (twelve years ago)

nah, man, sorry. i was just being a dick + i didn't notice you wrote like a dozen fader things about him. apart from fader and pitchfork, i don't really know of any place to read, like, a considered piece of writing longer than 50 words about rap releases and i don't really check tumblr or whatever. so, there you go.

dylannn, Sunday, 7 July 2013 16:26 (twelve years ago)

i dont write for them any more but boldy was nev really a 'fader' artist i just liked his music & posted him.

i guess i was more curious if you had a problem w something in particular or it was just, ew the smell of fader & pfork

i met this hipster turkish girl at an 18 year old's birthday party at a fake irish pub. at one point she was listing bands she had on her phone and asking if i knew them. "tv on the radio" "yeah i know them," etc. at one point in the conversation, i claimed to have written for pitchfork but it wasnt clear whether or not it had any effect.

dylannn, Sunday, 7 July 2013 19:37 (twelve years ago)

when i drove her home the next morning, she asked how old i was, i didn't have the heart to say i was ten years older than her so i dug my drivers license out of my pocket and handed it to her and she said, "nooooo, it's cool, my friend's rachel's boyfriend is like 32."

dylannn, Sunday, 7 July 2013 19:42 (twelve years ago)

to add insult to injury, my friend pietro said she looked like a fat emma watson.

dylannn, Sunday, 7 July 2013 19:44 (twelve years ago)

i want an 8.9 review of the havoc lp on pitchfork by the end of next week.

dylannn, Sunday, 7 July 2013 19:48 (twelve years ago)
