Johnny Fever's Not Pop Not Indie Shambhala 2013

The second annual edition of this thread wherein JF and 3 or 4 other people mindmeld on the usually girl-led, mostly synth-driven, pop-not-pop music we like.

Just discovered this X PRIEST X track earlier in the evening and made a youtube for it.

There's supposedly an EP being recorded for late summer release. Hope so. She's the business!

Rebeka's Hellada album is among my favorites of the year. Here's a video for the track "Melancholia".

This is a little more on the goth end of the spectrum, like something you'd hear on a Sunday club night in 1986. The duo is Tempers. The track is "Strange Harvest".

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Monday, 8 July 2013 06:50 (twelve years ago)

Heloise & The Savoir Faire was sort of blip on my radar when her first album came out a few years back, but the new one is way more in line with my tastes. "Time Lords" goes crazy with some autotune, but makes it work.

Is Rebeka the same Rebeka on the recent Mirror People EPs?

boxedjoy, Monday, 8 July 2013 22:06 (twelve years ago)

Indeed.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Monday, 8 July 2013 22:09 (twelve years ago)

Then this is probably worth investigating.

The 2012 version of this thread was a favourite, by the way.

boxedjoy, Monday, 8 July 2013 22:19 (twelve years ago)

Cool. Hopefully other people will join in.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Monday, 8 July 2013 22:20 (twelve years ago)

I have very vague memories of Dënver's last album, so hearing "Tu Peor Rival" and it's funkiness strikes me as something kind of different than they were doing before (but I could be completely wrong). Either way, it's cool.

Empress Of returned with the Systems EP, and Lorely Rodríguez includs a couple songs in Spanish, which sound uncannily like a Latino Liz Frazier.

Me So Hormetic (Sanpaku), Thursday, 11 July 2013 14:23 (twelve years ago)

IAMX returned with a late 2012 release, which hasn't been mentioned on ILX (it does slip between partisan camps). I wanted to call attention to this spectacular promo video:

Me So Hormetic (Sanpaku), Thursday, 11 July 2013 14:47 (twelve years ago)

I came across Polish synth poppers Rebeka (above) via Portuguese nu-disco producer Moulinex, who did a remix of "Melancholia", while Rebeka's Iwona Skwarek performed vocals on Moulinex's "Deja Vu".

Me So Hormetic (Sanpaku), Thursday, 11 July 2013 15:03 (twelve years ago)

that X Priest X is great.

I love that track by Heloise and the Savoir Faire. The vocal arrangements/harmonies are beautiful.

re: IAMX

I always preferred the Sneaker Pimps records with Chris Corner singing over the first, popular, one. They totally became a better band when they kicked out Kelli Dayton. I've still only ever heard the very first IAMX album, though. I should catch up.

MØ was a favorite (of mine, at least) in last year's thread. Here's her latest single. Album soon, presumably.

I'm into this IAMX track, btw. Gonna check out the whole lp asap.

Another newish band that ILX appears unaware of:

haerts are great - i like "wings" a ton

monotony, Friday, 12 July 2013 14:46 (twelve years ago)

And, may I also suggest Little Daylight for your music consumption habit?

Me So Hormetic (Sanpaku), Friday, 12 July 2013 14:48 (twelve years ago)

I like "Wings" a ton too, so much so that I went to see them based on that song. Too bad it's their only good one (of the few that I heard).

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Friday, 12 July 2013 15:46 (twelve years ago)

Was a big fan of We Are Enfant Terrible leading up to and including their first album in 2011, and they're back with some new stuff. Sorta accidentally melodic cheap keyboard pop/electro. I'm not embedding the video for "Melted" in the event that eyes and mouths put in the wrong places on faces freaks anyone out (it does me, a little bit).

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Monday, 15 July 2013 07:29 (twelve years ago)

Kind of irritated that this girl is going by the name Sundays, since there's already a The Sundays which plays a pretty big role in my music listening life. But hey, it's a good track.

Loving this thread! I think XPriestX is my fave so far... though the chorus could be better. And my god, this girl is so gorgeous:

(sorry for the pic size :)

daavid, Friday, 19 July 2013 06:33 (twelve years ago)

I'm guessing most people here are already aware of Tove Lo but whatever, "Habits" is still my favourite song (and video) of the year so far:

Yeah, great song.

A #1 song in NZ (by a 16 yr old singer songwriter), but I think it still qualifies:

Lorde - The Love Club
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ca50eYQR58Q

Also, Fallujah had a good single.

Fallulah, that is. Kinda fortunate/unfortunate name

sinking in the quicksands of (Sanpaku), Friday, 19 July 2013 17:18 (twelve years ago)

song title doesn't help. at least it's not "bombed-out"?

katherine, Friday, 19 July 2013 17:22 (twelve years ago)

I liked the song "Bridges" on Fallulah's first album, but the rest of it left me sorta meh. This one's pretty good, though.

Know little about MS MR's major label debut Secondhand Rapture, but lead single seems apropos to this thread:

Chvrches has a new single. The accent is toned down a bit from Cranberries territory.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ktoaj1IpTbw

Came across a promising group Dræmings with a lovely alto just on the dreamy side of overwrought. They're calling their EP a mixtape.

Sanpaku, Monday, 22 July 2013 18:08 (twelve years ago)

There's something very Eastern European about that "Reno" song. I wasn't sure at first, but I liked it by the end.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Monday, 22 July 2013 18:12 (twelve years ago)

Recent francophone pop act from Montreal. I'm not sold on all of their stuff but I'm liking this one:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ODjsQiNMhFo

daavid, Monday, 22 July 2013 23:35 (twelve years ago)

The MS MR song could almost be a Florence track.

daavid, Monday, 22 July 2013 23:41 (twelve years ago)

I posted about The Preatures in the Haim thread a while back because I think "Is This How You Feel?" has a lot in common stylistically and feel-wise as what Haim's released so far, though I think the rest of their stuff may have more of a classic rock/Lauren Canyon thing. Either way, this song still pumps my blood after 3 or 4 months in rotation.

More X Priest X from late last year:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTJYkzd8-Dw

I'm taken with Naomi Elizabeth at the moment. She's kind of an American equivalent to a lot of the Russian performance-art homemade-electro-pop i listen to. It won't be to all tastes and i can see how people might find something like I Have Got Your Password (which has had 607 Youtube views in three months) rather grating) but i really like it.
