some albums just missing the Top 25 27 include: 29 Kraftwerk - Radio-Aktivität, 30 Elton John - Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy, 31 Earth, Wind & Fire - That's the Way of the World, 32 Lou Reed - Coney Island Baby, 34 Emmylou Harris - Pieces of the Sky, 35 Guy Clark - Old No. 1, 39 The Dictators - Go Girl Crazy!, 37 Tony Bennett and Bill Evans - The Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Album, 38 Spinners - Pick of the Litter, 40 Emmylou Harris - Elite Hotel, 42 Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes - Wake Up Everybody, 44 Nils Lofgren - Nils Lofgren, 45 Curtis Mayfield - There's No Place Like America Today, 46 Eno - Discreet Music, 48 Allen Toussaint - Southern Nights, 49 Hank Williams, Jr. - Hank Williams Jr. & Friends and 50 The Who - The Who by Numbers.

Bee OK, Thursday, 11 July 2013 01:27 (twelve years ago)

I'm a bit disappointed with this list. 1975 was probably my favourite year for amazing soul albums, but apart from Mothership Connection none of them are here.

Minnie Riperton - Adventures in Paradise (My favourite album of the year)
Curtis Mayfield - There's no Place Like America Today
Smokey Robinson - A Quiet Storm
Ohio Players - Honey
Commodores - Caught in The Act
Allen Toussaint - Southern Nights
Sam Dees - The Show Must Go On
Earth, Wind & Fire - That's The Way of The World

Plus great albums by The 3 Pieces, Isley Brothers, Natural Four, Millie Jackson, War, Bobby Womack, Hot Chocolate, Sly Stone, Kool & The Gang, Isaac Hayes, Labelle and The Spinners.

Will probably vote for Parliament just ahead of Eno.

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 11 July 2013 01:52 (twelve years ago)

Voted for Queen.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 11 July 2013 01:57 (twelve years ago)

Eno - Another Green World

Steely Dan - Katy Lied
Burning Spear - Marcus Garvey
Bob Dylan and The Band - The Basement Tapes
Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks

Neil Young - Tonight's the Night
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
Parliament - Mothership Connection

g simmel, Thursday, 11 July 2013 01:59 (twelve years ago)

the last three are great albums by artists I don't usually care much about. the Dan/Spear/Band/Dylan albums are classics. the Eno is sublime

i think this list is pretty great. the Top 12 is about as good as you can get for any year in the '70s.

one of these: Blood on the Tracks, Katy Lied, Tonight's the Night, Wish You Were Here and Another Green World.

Another great year. Like all of these a lot:

2 20 Patti Smith - Horses
4 97 Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti
5 134 Queen - A Night at the Opera
6 148 Neil Young - Tonight's the Night
8 217 Eno - Another Green World
11 361 Aerosmith - Toys in the Attic
16 579 Keith Jarrett - The Köln Concert
20 806 Fleetwood Mac - Fleetwood Mac
25 1018 Steely Dan - Katy Lied
27 1201 Jeff Beck - Blow by Blow

Zep vs Eno vs Jeff Beck. Might actually be leaning towards Beck!

Big fan of Another Green World but this has got to be Neu! 75, what a freakin amazing album that is

frogbs, Thursday, 11 July 2013 03:17 (twelve years ago)

I should listen to it. I like what I've heard by Neu!.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Thursday, 11 July 2013 03:36 (twelve years ago)

the split nature of it puts off a few (essentially Rother and Dinger both had creative control over one side of the record) but both of those guys were hitting their peak right there - Rother was doing Harmonia, Dinger was about to form La Dusseldorf and release their incredible debut album...if you don't fall in love with "Isi" right away I'll eat my hat

frogbs, Thursday, 11 July 2013 03:40 (twelve years ago)

Wow. Eno, Parliament, Bruce, double Neil, Burning Spear and Zeppelin among my all-time favorites.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 11 July 2013 03:45 (twelve years ago)

Def a few albums here I should've heard but I am going w Mothership Connection, which is likely my fave from the P-Funk I've heard

the gospel of meth (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 11 July 2013 05:39 (twelve years ago)

1) Zuma, 2) Tonight's the Night, 3) Blood on the Tracks, 4) Katy Lied, 5. Another Green World. (To counteract such rock-critic orthodoxy, I'll note that Alive! would have been my #1 in '76, just before I started buying Neil albums.) Guessing I'll be the only Zuma vote alongside a few for Tonight's the Night.

the split nature of N75 puts me off far less than that of N2. love both sides, agree that R&D were both operating at max cap, but i'm finding another green world's sonic & emotional palette extremely affecting these days. relative to 75, it may not be as immersively blissed or viscerally thrilling (side 1 vs 2), but it's every bit as deeply sunk in vibe and moves in a great many more directions. it may be corny, but just "the big ship" alone...

twerking for obvious reasons (contenderizer), Thursday, 11 July 2013 09:57 (twelve years ago)

Voted Eno, but my favorite album of 75 is actually Caetano Velosos Joia. Such an amazing album, talk about an affecting sonic palette.

Probably Physical Graffiti, which is the one I most enjoy as a complete album off this list.

I ended up going that way, despite i) Fripp's work on Another Green World being one of my favourite things ever and ii) Plant's voice being pretty far from its best on PG. Page's production was probably at its peak at this time. "Kashmir", "The Rover", "The Wanton Song", "Ten Years Gone": all classics.

i just think there are so many good albums from this year that it's really hard to crack the Top 25. most of those do show up, lets see:

n/a Minnie Riperton - Adventures in Paradise
45. Curtis Mayfield - There's no Place Like America Today
"bubbling under" the all-time top 3000 Smokey Robinson - A Quiet Storm
n/a Ohio Players - Honey
n/a Commodores - Caught in The Act
48. Allen Toussaint - Southern Nights
n/a Sam Dees - The Show Must Go On
31. Earth, Wind & Fire - That's The Way of The World

hell even Black Sabbath Sabotage only made the "bubbling under" the all-time top 3000 list.

Bee OK, Friday, 12 July 2013 01:27 (twelve years ago)

i've given up griping about it, but yeah, these lists always skew heavily toward canonized white rock

twerking for obvious reasons (contenderizer), Friday, 12 July 2013 01:31 (twelve years ago)

...by dudes. i thought of going with mothership as a protest vote (and because it's easily top 5 here), but i just really like that eno album.

twerking for obvious reasons (contenderizer), Friday, 12 July 2013 01:34 (twelve years ago)

contenderizer: Well, two out of three is pretty good, since you voted for a canonised white dude whose album is arguably not 'rock'. I wonder how many people were in your position and voted with the same belief in mind, and how much of that audience skews the poll here in ILX-land.

Blood on the Tracks for me, though it is a toughy. Lots of good stuff in there. Love that Patti Smith album. But Blood hits all the right spots for me.

It would be easier to vote for the one I like the least. I was never a huge Aerosmith fan.

c21m50nh3x460n, Friday, 12 July 2013 01:45 (twelve years ago)

i figure the overall electoral body represented in these RYM lists isn't worlds away from ILX, demographically, so i'm not surprised to similar patterns replicated here (and still more clearly in my own tastes tbh). suppose it's mostly the not wanting to belong to an army of me thing.

and that's a damn good aerosmith record.

I don't think that 'poptimism' really extended to populist 70s guitar rock. Quite the opposite, if anything.

NB: I haven't heard Alive and don't think that highly of Kiss myself, although I like a few songs.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Tuesday, 16 July 2013 04:36 (twelve years ago)

for a generally smart guy, C.E. had an incredibly irritating posting style -- used to make me crazy when he'd write shit like "i'm gonna list 20 things that are better than 20 other things, at least i think so, i haven't actually listened to any of those things in a decade or more." love the absolutely OTM response to that bullshit post:

So does that make Horses the best album recorded by someone with a vagina (or is there another connection between these artists that I am missing)?

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Tuesday, 16 July 2013 04:37 (twelve years ago)

tbh 'horses' isn't even my favorite patti smith album, i'd definitely rate 'easter' ahead of it. the title track and obv 'gloria' are great, but there's some throwaway stuff on there too.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Tuesday, 16 July 2013 04:40 (twelve years ago)

The Eno record is great, but the Joni Mitchell album is possibly her best, therefore the best overall IMO
