songs where the singer stutters

This morning when I drove to work they passed You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet by BTO on the radio. A song I used to love when it came out in 1974. I still like that part when the singer stutters during the chorus.

In which other songs is stuttering used?

there is something rather reassuring hearing that Bachman Turner Overdrive are still getting airplay in Germany. it certainly reminds me not to waste another fucking second of my life reading anything by Polly Toynbee or Will Hutton, at any rate.

robin carmody (robin carmody), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 17:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Late rockabilly legend Charlie Feathers recorded a song called "Stutterin' Cindy" in which--you guessed it--he stutters. He also recorded "Tongue-Tied Jill," in which he aped some unidentified speech impediment or language disability ("Me dot what me want when dot 'u"--something like that).

Polly Toynbee or Will Hutton
Who are these and what did you want to say about German radio, Robin? It is really awful by the way. At least the commercial and most public radio stations.

Thanks Dan. I had "My Generation" in my mind as the classic example but I somehow couldn't name it.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 10 October 2002 07:53 (twenty-three years ago)

So many of these songs listed seem to be instances where the singer
doesn't sound like they are imitating a stutter, more like just filling in time so the line can scan.

Can't believe that no-one has said this:

"N-n-n-n-n-never stop" - Echo and the Bunnymen

as well as

"Blind Vision" by Blancmange ("It's .. it's....getting harder)
"Solid" by Ashford and simpson ("The thrill is still h-h-h-h-h-h-hot")

Morrissey must have done it loads of times, but I'm buggered if I can think of one.

Alex, count yourself lucky never to have heard of Toynbee or Hutton. They are the exhausted bores who give the British liberal-leftie press a bad name ...

robin carmody (robin carmody), Saturday, 12 October 2002 03:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Stewart: one of my own songs ("Shagpile Sexuality", written in April this year) lifts the chorus of "S-S-S-Single Bed". the lyrics over the melody line are a comment on the mentality and the worldview that the song incarnates (though the specific inspiration was my uncle - I mean, he was the basis for the character in the song). Write to me privately and I'll send you it, if you're interested.
