Mazzy Star: Seasons of your Day

new album out in September, their first for 17 years. One track 'California' is available for preview. Are you looking forward to the album or do you think their time has passed?

well i rather like this new track! much better than the one that came out in 2011 which i forgot instantly. call me cautiously optimistic?

haven't listened to the track. i am excited that they still want to make music but i do feel like the first two albums are all that i need, and not even all of the first two albums, just most of them. i bought a used copy of among my swans a few years ago but i haven't even listened to it.

that said, i really love them. they occupy a weird place for me in that they make some of my favorite music but i only actively listen to like 60% of what they do.

just listened, the new song is cool.

also, hope sandoval is so beautiful.

As much as I like the spell that So Tonight That I Might See cast, I could listen to a whole album of "Take Everything"

I love all three albums, but it's true some tracks are much better than others. You could make a great 15 track album out of them, but the question is which 15 would you choose?

i always thought that bavarian fruit bread was totally underrated. "on the low" used to put me straight to sleep, for weeks on end.

I listened to the new album by droney Gothic-country act True Widow yesterday, and it put me in a mood to listen to Mazzy Star. So I put all three albums, and everything by Hope Sandoval and the Warm Inventions, into my iPod last night. Now today they announce a new album. I'm not a big believer in convergences and whatnot, but that's odd.

Common Burn? That is my favorite song of theirs. Clearly it is the greatest thing they have ever recorded. Everyone thinks so, man.

Lay Myself Down is way better!

'Five string serenade' was almost ruined for me after it was sampled in Trik Turner's friends and family. Don't know if it was popular but a friend played it enough to annoy me.

"California" is stunning on first listen. Whatever it was, is intact.

haven't listened to this yet. Part of me is excited but another part feels that by Among My Swans the well had run dry. At this stage, I think the debut is still the only classic they made.

Excited for the news! I never did check out the 2011 single. Really enjoyed the last Hope Sandoval album that came out, too lazy to look up, around 2011 as well? I would be shocked if this new album is terrible.

There's a collection out there, not sure if it was an official release or an Internet compilation, called The Other Side: B-Sides, Live Cuts and Rarities that collects most essential non-album Mazzy Star tracks. Probably very easy to hunt down. Includes all the tracks electricsound listed above and some soundboard stuff and an acoustic "Ride It On." It's a good listen, more eclectic than their albums, but it gives the impression their vault isn't really all that deep.

agreed. it's good, but it sounded exactly the way I' expect it to.....not sure I like it any more than the other three records, and less than Hope Sandoval's two albums. It's still good though.

indeed an otm impression. some of it is very nice as many other parts just kind of drift boringly. i'll probably just cherry-pick a few tracks to keep. "california" is one of my singles of the year for sure.

feel like she started out w/ more of a twang on the first album, and then ditched it. but yeah, it's kinda back in parts here.

Like this a lot. Won't pretend to understand any carping about "more of the same" cause a) the same is awesome. It's called having a style. It's why I buy every Motorhead album, every Cannibal Corpse album, every Sade album with confidence.

yeah, I don't really want a Mazzy Star record that's attempting to surprise or challenge me.

the songs "Seasons of Your Day" and "Spoon" are really doing it for me here in this early autumn. I already knew Common Burn and Lay Myself Down were awesome.

will get round to hearing it soon. the older I get the more anal I seen to become.

"in the kingdom" is so great, the guitar strings sound as if they had smoked a joint and popped some acid afterwards. the notes are stretched for an eternity, that slide guitar is terrific. the next two songs are still quite nice but after that i only love the slightly melancholic "lay myself down" which starts as a kind of stomper and finishes as a surreal painting by the pedal steel guitar. mazzy star know how to give the rural country music an urban psychedelic touch.

I don't know. After the dust has settled, I've kind of looked at this as one of the less fruitful reunions/come backs. Seasons of Your Day was good, but I'd have no issue with calling it their "worst" album.

Dave's guitar ventures off into genuinely new sounds (for him) all throughout the album. Phase shifters, different delay types, and a sort of ring modulator effect are all over it. It's always been their most sonically pretty album to me. And I happen to like that sort of thing.

So Tonight That I Might See + Seasons of Your Day >> Among My Swan >> She Hangs Brightly

I love all their albums, but She Hangs Brightly is definitely the weakest of the four for me, with Seasons and So Tonight sharing the top tier. I like the narrative that they nailed down what they were going for on the second album and stayed in that groove for the next two, but honestly if you look at the timeline for the recording of Seasons of Your Day, that doesn't really hold up at all. It has songs (or at least parts of songs) that were recorded in 1990. Maybe it's progression in production only?
