Katie Jane Garside thread (Queenadreena, Ruby Throat, Daisy Chainsaw and more)

I really became a fan quite recently. Got Daisy Chainsaw's Eleventeen, Queenadreena's Drink Me and Live dvd, and I'm listening to Ruby Throat's Ventriloquist right now. I'm utterly fascinated by her image, not just because she's beautiful, but the whole mad disorientated faery thing is just so brilliant.

I have to say that her voice impressed me most on the Daisy Chainsaw album, the variety and the pitches she managed were amazing.

Is there much of a consensus on what is her best work?

There also seems to be recurring comments about her bands always being support and rarely headliners, people always saying they are superior to most bands they support.

I simply didn't "get" Eleventeen when it came out. Love Your Money was a cool single, but the rest of that album made no sense to me. A few years later, I LOVED IT! They were ahead of my time.

Queenadreena was pretty good as well. Probably even more out there than Daisy Chainsaw. Haven't heard Ruby Throat.

I don't know her stuff too well cos I didn't really enjoy Daisy Chainsaw much at the time, but I do have that Ruby Throat album and it's pretty great.

The other bands were Lalleshwari and Hector Zazuo/Katie Jane Garside.

I didnt know she lived on a boat and did broadcasts from it.

Listening to Ventriloquist more, the whole boat thing is really reflected in the music (and the great sleeve photo of her in the water), the music is mostly languid, but there are rockier moments, especially one of the bonus tracks.

she's underrated for sure

I have a few albums (DC's Eleventeen, QA's Taxidermy, and the Lalleshwari disc). I've come to consider myself a fan, but only take her in small doses. Her vocals are compelling and I'd agree that Eleventeen is probably the best example of her range. It sounds like she's constantly gulping for air as she sings. I'd imagine that probably irks a lot of listeners, but I happen to like it.

She also does visual art, some of which gets posted and sold on her website. One of these days, I think I may actually shell out for a CD with handmade cover art if she does it again.

Crispin Gray is such a weird guitar player. I love it. Sounds sloppy and out of tune and careless, but dude is in total control at every moment of every recording.

Whenever he's performing he looks pretty concentrated to me.

I'm in the irked category when it comes to her vocals but re-listening to Eleventeen now, I'm amazed how heavy-goth their sound was. Some of the music sounds like a rockier Fields of the Neph

Underrated album imo. There's a great interview on Vice that's not been linked here: Searching for Utopia: An Interview with KatieJane Garside (with lots of photos of said boat)

"Happy Now" is the song that really stayed with me from that album. Wonderful stuff.

yeah I think he's a bit underrated. I realise Daisy Chainsaw weren't for everybody but the guitars always sounded great to me
