False Priest had its moments, after that shit got sketchy

Is this worth listening to? He's been so annoying for the last couple years, like he's daring the world to hate him

Beatrix Kiddo (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 18 July 2013 02:51 (twelve years ago)

it's OK, i'm hoping that with only 11 tracks that maybe he might have made a great album again.

Bee OK, Thursday, 18 July 2013 02:53 (twelve years ago)

haven't really loved him since Skeletal Lamping. the last two i could never really get into as i have had in the past.

Bee OK, Thursday, 18 July 2013 02:55 (twelve years ago)

Really excited for this. Some of their early stuff is amazing and this seems to be going in a new direction so at leas that's something.

Belug, Thursday, 18 July 2013 03:10 (twelve years ago)

Also, is this going to be OM's equivalent to Deerhunter's Monomania?

Belug, Thursday, 18 July 2013 03:52 (twelve years ago)

so i have listened to this single four times and hasn't really moved me.

i think the whole album has actually leaked but i'm going to wait.

Bee OK, Saturday, 20 July 2013 02:17 (twelve years ago)

Woke up with this in my head this morning! Looking forward to the album.

timellison, Sunday, 21 July 2013 21:25 (twelve years ago)

Didn't realize it was recorded with different people than those who have been in the touring band. Lineup is listed here:

i just got this email:

Inspired by Dylan, the Stones, Neil Young, and more, Lousy with Sylvianbriar was created with a new songwriting approach, a different recording method, and a fresh group of musicians.

Recorded live to a 24-track tape machine during a frenetic three week period in Kevin Barnes' home studio, Lousy with Sylvianbriar is a throwback to early of Montreal albums and contains callbacks of an even earlier time.

"I knew I wanted the process to be more in line with the way people used to make albums in the late 60s and early 70s," reveals Barnes.

"I wanted to work fast and to maintain a high level of spontaneity and immediacy. I wanted the songs to be more lyric-driven, and for the instrumental arrangements to be understated and uncluttered."

That single is alright. At least not as actively offputting as some of the recent albums. That bad rubberstamp cloning on the grass under the bike is driving me nuts though.

Ok, this album is going very well so far. Really laid back.

Evan, Friday, 13 September 2013 16:27 (eleven years ago)

Suddenly Of Montreal wouldn't be out of place next to Cass McCombs in a mix with this new material...

Evan, Friday, 13 September 2013 16:30 (eleven years ago)

i have really liked what i have heard so far, this is great news.

Bee OK, Saturday, 14 September 2013 01:17 (eleven years ago)

Maintains the same sound throughout!

zingon grammar (Treeship), Saturday, 14 September 2013 02:08 (eleven years ago)

i can see myself playing this album a lot more than the last two.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 01:28 (eleven years ago)

Have you heard it?

Evan, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 02:40 (eleven years ago)

not all of it, some songs are on youtube but now going to wait to hear it in album form.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 03:41 (eleven years ago)

It's SO good.

Digging this more than any ofM since Skeletal. Great stuff!

mr.raffles, Saturday, 5 October 2013 15:22 (eleven years ago)

Me too!

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Saturday, 5 October 2013 15:40 (eleven years ago)

Since Satanic for me.

Evan, Saturday, 5 October 2013 16:16 (eleven years ago)

so you are not a fan of Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? which is their masterpiece?

imo

Bee OK, Sunday, 6 October 2013 04:40 (eleven years ago)

That's my favourite too, but faced with Paralytic Stalks I'm happy to hear this new one.

Bee, did I know you on diaryland back in the day?

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Sunday, 6 October 2013 05:39 (eleven years ago)

Oh well it's more that hissing fauna sent them on that trajectory until now. This one is closest in sound to satanic but is still much much more restrained. Satanic has always been closest to me, and this one is so measured and laid back especially for Of Montreal but its exactly where my had is at currently. The Of Montreal of hissing fauna through the last album is very far from my preferences in music these days so I was not prepared to like any new albums by them.

My head*

Evan, Sunday, 6 October 2013 06:12 (eleven years ago)

to Finefinemusic, no that wasn't me. i came from CMJ/Obner.

Bee OK, Sunday, 6 October 2013 18:18 (eleven years ago)

Ah. I knew a Bee there who was quite into the same music you are :)

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Sunday, 6 October 2013 18:33 (eleven years ago)

Seriously, this record is bananas good.
I was SO not interested in their last record... and False Priest was a def drop from Skeletal and Hissing too. Thought they bit it.

Going back to Paralytic Stalks now, I kinda like it too.
Maybe they just wore me out for a minute?

mr.raffles, Sunday, 13 October 2013 02:15 (eleven years ago)

damn this got an awful review in quietus

http://thequietus.com/articles/13605-of-montreal-lousy-with-sylvanbriar-review

i'm feeling it though. the beat he's working in hegira emigre is reminding me a lot of what neil hagerty's been up to lately

reggie (qualmsley), Tuesday, 15 October 2013 23:30 (eleven years ago)

i super like this

socki (s1ocki), Wednesday, 16 October 2013 00:33 (eleven years ago)

this is nice, it makes me wanna gratuitously diss foxygen

oh shit you psyched yourself into liking mbv (Hunt3r), Wednesday, 16 October 2013 04:31 (eleven years ago)

so i have still yet to get around to hearing this. because of this thread i went ahead and bought this album.

Bee OK, Saturday, 19 October 2013 03:30 (eleven years ago)

so it's like the old days were you buy stuff and hope for the best.

Bee OK, Saturday, 19 October 2013 03:31 (eleven years ago)

whats up with the cover of this album tho rite

socki (s1ocki), Saturday, 19 October 2013 04:02 (eleven years ago)

I can't get into this one. Just feels really flat compared to his last few albums.

silverfish, Saturday, 19 October 2013 13:42 (eleven years ago)

this is 1000x more listenable than the last 2

twist boat veterans for stability (k3vin k.), Saturday, 26 October 2013 01:50 (eleven years ago)

I'm with silverfish on this one. Not my thing. Just has nothing appealing for me in the opposite way Paralytic had waaay too much stuff going on.

Pingu Unchained (dog latin), Saturday, 26 October 2013 08:37 (eleven years ago)

the first song is hella E6-y, almost sounds like a unicorns song actually

twist boat veterans for stability (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 30 October 2013 16:26 (eleven years ago)

k3vin k. otm. it's really hard to fathom how people would find this less listenable than the previous two turds. this album has completely restored my faith in of Montreal.

JACK SQUAT about these Charlie Nobodies (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 30 October 2013 17:12 (eleven years ago)

False Priest was booyakasha

PaulTMA, Wednesday, 30 October 2013 17:30 (eleven years ago)

I have a feeling all of his shit will make more sense in retrospect, we all just need some distance

Beatrix Kiddo (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 1 November 2013 02:36 (eleven years ago)

This is great, his best, easily, since Hissing Fauna; I have no idea what the haters are hearing.

Simon H., Friday, 1 November 2013 02:55 (eleven years ago)

two months pass...

argh i got maybe 1 minute into the track nominated for the year-end poll? now listening to 'ye, renew the plaintiff' and it is like an entirely different language let alone a different band. paralytic stalks still an absolute fucking masterpiece obv

VENIET IMBER (imago), Wednesday, 8 January 2014 17:42 (eleven years ago)

yeah, I'm not convinced this is good, but it's at least an interesting left turn

Ornate Coleman (Moodles), Wednesday, 8 January 2014 17:45 (eleven years ago)

paralytic stalks was an interesting left-turn for the entirety of indie rock. one of the most interesting left-turns. this is not a left-turn, this is a clumsy barge thru those dismal saloon doors marked 'get back to your roots, they're authentic!!'

VENIET IMBER (imago), Wednesday, 8 January 2014 17:50 (eleven years ago)

shit maybe this whole ALBUM is an 'authentic pyrrhic remission' IT WAS PROPHESIED

VENIET IMBER (imago), Wednesday, 8 January 2014 17:50 (eleven years ago)

alright, who pissed in imago's wheaties this morning?

an enormous bolus of flatulence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 8 January 2014 17:56 (eleven years ago)

i'm compiling my 2013 lists. critical faculties set to kill

VENIET IMBER (imago), Wednesday, 8 January 2014 17:56 (eleven years ago)

have in fact stopped compiling my 2013 list to relisten to paralytic stalks, which is still a goddamned amazing fucking masterpiece fucking insanely brilliant achievement which you are all and I mean all wrong about

VENIET IMBER (imago), Wednesday, 8 January 2014 17:57 (eleven years ago)

I kind of like this album now. It's still a pretty big disappointment though, coming off a pretty amazing run of albums.

Paralytic Stalks keeps getting better.
