OutdoorFish, Sunday, 21 July 2013 14:56 (twelve years ago)

Oasis one of the worst bands to ever gain widespread popularity. GnR are fine.

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Sunday, 21 July 2013 15:13 (twelve years ago)

GnR from about 1987-1991, sure. in its current incarnation....feck em.

Oasis's best release is "Wibbling Rivalry"

Neanderthal, Sunday, 21 July 2013 15:18 (twelve years ago)

when a great band gets worse, or changes its lineup entirely, it's not fair to hold it against them.as guns n roses themselves remind us, nothing lasts forever and we both know hearts can change.

Treeship, Sunday, 21 July 2013 15:26 (twelve years ago)

or changes its lineup entirely, it's not fair to hold it against them.

when the lineup change is due to "egomaniac frontman makes it impossible to be in the same room with him without contemplating homicide", sure it is!

nothing lasts forever and we both know hearts can change.

lol

Neanderthal, Sunday, 21 July 2013 15:32 (twelve years ago)

i think you might just need some time on your own.

Treeship, Sunday, 21 July 2013 15:34 (twelve years ago)

are there people who don't like classic era guns n roses? serious question.

Treeship, Sunday, 21 July 2013 20:49 (twelve years ago)

Izzy > Bonehead

Master of Treacle, Sunday, 21 July 2013 20:57 (twelve years ago)

They probably have about an album and a half's worth of great material each.

GNR the better rock band, the aforementioned Izzy and a much better rhythm section

Master of Treacle, Sunday, 21 July 2013 20:58 (twelve years ago)

Allowing that both have huge quantities of awful flab and ego dragging them down, GnR have less. Comparing the highs - "Wonderwall" crushes most of GnR's ballads, and I'd narrowly take "Champagne Supernova" over "November Rain," but right this second "Welcome to the Jungle" is sounding more awesome in my head than "Supersonic." GnR.

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 21 July 2013 21:18 (twelve years ago)

even though nothing lasts forever, even cold november rain, i'm pretty sure the campy magnificence of the final part of "november rain" -- starting at 6:47 -- with the ott soaring guitar solo, will be putting a grin on peoples' faces for centuries, millenia, to come.

Treeship, Sunday, 21 July 2013 21:22 (twelve years ago)

Oasis comparisons make GnR seem more interesting than they really, are

Drugs A. Money, Sunday, 21 July 2013 21:34 (twelve years ago)

Agreed, and I still basically like the first few years of Oasis, if one's allowed to sub in non-album stuff for the filler on "Morning Glory."

Wonder if "All Around The World" would be a better match for "November Rain"...

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 21 July 2013 21:35 (twelve years ago)

Like they have a song called Yesterday that has nothing ti do w the Beatles song! On the same album that they did a Live and Let Die cover! I'll bet Noel is still trying to wrap his head around that...

xp

Drugs A. Money, Sunday, 21 July 2013 21:38 (twelve years ago)

wasn't there a "guns 'n' roses are the american smiths" thread? too lazy to look. gnr is the obvious winner in oasis-v-guns but throw smiths in and i'm just not sure.

is appetite for destruction better than definitely maybe?

OutdoorFish, Sunday, 21 July 2013 21:59 (twelve years ago)

definitely definitely

IIIrd Datekeeper (contenderizer), Sunday, 21 July 2013 22:00 (twelve years ago)

I consider Oasis's songs generally better compositionally and yet, I fuckin' hate those well-composed songs by Oasis. Hence GnR.

tight in the runs (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Sunday, 21 July 2013 22:11 (twelve years ago)

I wonder how Winger would do in this lineup.

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 21 July 2013 22:21 (twelve years ago)

The best tunes on Appetite are easily greater than anything the cock bros ever made but does One In A Million alter voting?

kraudive, Sunday, 21 July 2013 23:00 (twelve years ago)

TS: TS vs. FACE OFF

rip van wanko, Sunday, 21 July 2013 23:20 (twelve years ago)

"live forever"'s the only oasis song that hits the highs for me that g&r does and nothing they've ever done floors me like "sweet child 'o mine" (my favorite kind of riff like that since "crazy train"), "patience," or "paradise city"

reggie (qualmsley), Sunday, 21 July 2013 23:23 (twelve years ago)

FACE OFF: FACE OFF Vs TS

OutdoorFish, Sunday, 21 July 2013 23:24 (twelve years ago)

i don't think so bub

rip van wanko, Sunday, 21 July 2013 23:24 (twelve years ago)

xxxxpost One in a Million does paint them in a much worse light for obvious reasons, yea, but Lies is definitely not part of my GNR canon.

Neanderthal, Sunday, 21 July 2013 23:26 (twelve years ago)

the spaghetti incident? vs be here now

OutdoorFish, Sunday, 21 July 2013 23:26 (twelve years ago)

OutdoorFish, Sunday, 21 July 2013 23:29 (twelve years ago)

Lies is definitely not part of my GNR canon.

otm. it's appetite and maybe half of use your illusion. the rest is silence.

IIIrd Datekeeper (contenderizer), Sunday, 21 July 2013 23:37 (twelve years ago)

Christgau gave "The Spaghetti Incident?" a respectable A-.

Treeship, Monday, 22 July 2013 01:10 (twelve years ago)

their cover of the Misfits "Attitude" should have resulted in jail time IMO

Neanderthal, Monday, 22 July 2013 01:14 (twelve years ago)

you win, because "welcome to the jungle" exists

the late great, Monday, 22 July 2013 08:37 (twelve years ago)

are there people who don't like classic era guns n roses? serious question.

I think they're overrated, consider "One in a Million" unforgivable, and find Axl Rose annoying, but even I have to grant that about half of Appetite is flat-out excellent.

(There are definitely people who don't like that sort of rock music at all, though.)

EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 22 July 2013 15:35 (twelve years ago)

"Mr Brownstone" and "Rocket Queen" are pretty amazing in particular imo.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 22 July 2013 15:36 (twelve years ago)

Guns n Roses is literally unlistenable and their fans should be ashamed, Oasis is ok sometimes

sleepingbag, Monday, 22 July 2013 15:38 (twelve years ago)

i think you must have g 'n r confused with some other band. for referene:

Treeship, Monday, 22 July 2013 15:39 (twelve years ago)

I've never heard an entire Oasis album so I can't really answer this fairly, though. I like a handful of their songs.

lol I was about as serious as most people were in the Pippa's Arse thread.

ffs I'm a huge Radiohead fan!

Neanderthal, Wednesday, 31 July 2013 23:21 (twelve years ago)

the drummer thing.. i mean are drums even audible on those first two records? the guitars and vocals are so prominent in the mix, the drums sound like sidechain echoes.

( (brimstead), Wednesday, 31 July 2013 23:34 (twelve years ago)

"columbia" would be nothing without that big beat, though. that shit is funky.

( (brimstead), Wednesday, 31 July 2013 23:34 (twelve years ago)

Yeah the near-universal hatred towards Oasis is one of those unexplainable British things, without all the British votes Oasis would've won in a landslide.
I guess Oasis well respected reputation abroad is mainly because people are not exposed to British tabloids and are not reminded weekly that they're assholes.

I assume North American tabloids don't cover Oasis on a weekly basis because North Americans don't care about them that much? They don't have the second-best-selling album in the US, either. (I mean, you were probably joking but I highly doubt that Oasis would have won in a landslide without British votes.)

EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 31 July 2013 23:35 (twelve years ago)

as an american growing up in the 90s, i got a huge "drugged out" vibe from oasis. they actually sounded high. sublime and 311 shit, well maybe they smoked weed but they still sounded like fucking jocks to me.

( (brimstead), Thursday, 1 August 2013 00:07 (twelve years ago)

jocks? No.

kraudive, Thursday, 1 August 2013 00:13 (twelve years ago)

They were arseholes (ahem xxpst) but working class as they come. They made a great noise for an album and a few singles but were nothing like as important as the UK press made them out to be.

kraudive, Thursday, 1 August 2013 00:15 (twelve years ago)

Like GNR I guess.

kraudive, Thursday, 1 August 2013 00:15 (twelve years ago)

i got nothing against the country or its music as a rule, but British rock from the 90s onwards is mostly a sad joke and these guys are the punchline

i can imagine from a US point of view that the latter is a sad joke because it doesn't really - ie. rock.

Master of Treacle, Thursday, 1 August 2013 00:17 (twelve years ago)

no i said the AMERICAN stoner bands at the time were total jocks. jocks, i really meant loud manic dudes that punch people and stuff and are decidedly unchill.

( (brimstead), Thursday, 1 August 2013 00:20 (twelve years ago)

right ok. Oasis were still fucking pricks to be around though.

kraudive, Thursday, 1 August 2013 00:25 (twelve years ago)

ha yeah, especially after hearing Def Maybe i got that these guys were drunken pricks. i'm thinking maybe the wonderwall video caused Americans to think these dudes were charasmatic beatles types.

( (brimstead), Thursday, 1 August 2013 00:37 (twelve years ago)

and champagne supernovar

how's life, Thursday, 1 August 2013 00:38 (twelve years ago)

there was a kid in my class who used to sing Oasis songs to himself, but the dude had somehow combined "Champagne Supernova" and "Wonderwall" into one song and he would sing "I saw you walking down the hall/faster than a cannonball/you're my wonderwall".

I think he either died or got a job at Radio Shack. can't remember which.

Neanderthal, Thursday, 1 August 2013 00:39 (twelve years ago)

The best part of a year of constant live performances and recordings, along with a hedonistic lifestyle, were taking their toll on the band. This behaviour culminated during a gig in Los Angeles in September 1994, leading to inept performance by Liam during which he made offensive remarks about American audiences and hit Noel with a tambourine.

― christmas candy bar (al leong), Wednesday, July 31, 2013 2:52 PM (3 hours ago)

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-OcrHR0CJ7io/UfnBhCNZE8I/AAAAAAAAAjw/JV_v4K9tdOM/w426-h320/oasis.jpg

as you can see i was at this show, it was an impossible ticket, they did four dates, Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York and not sure of the other place before they came back for a proper tour.

Liam did talk a bit but no one understood a word he was saying when he was not singing. i do remember him throwing things but it was not as bad as it was made out to be. they were just learning, very raw and didn't know what to do on stage.

Bee OK, Thursday, 1 August 2013 02:05 (twelve years ago)

does soundgarden, stone temple pilots and matchbox 20 count?

OutdoorFish, Friday, 2 August 2013 09:11 (twelve years ago)

Surely that's a reference to the post-grunge crowd

'underground' wise there's obviously no comparison

Master of Treacle, Friday, 2 August 2013 09:30 (twelve years ago)

Weird it just now occurred to me that there's really not an ongoing underground rock culture in the UK in the same way there is in the US.... it's like when you think 90s music board dorks from UK think of Blur & Oasis and we think about like Unwound or Jesus Lizard

hello :) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Saturday, 3 August 2013 02:32 (twelve years ago)

I think it's because a lot of the underground-styled/sounding bands in the UK take all their cues from their US counterparts.....but if you already have the latter, what use is the former, watered down?

Master of Treacle, Saturday, 3 August 2013 03:14 (twelve years ago)

oh gosh i meant MTV rock, sorry i left out all the indie rock bands.

( (brimstead), Saturday, 3 August 2013 05:02 (twelve years ago)

the fact you are aware of underground us music and not underground uk music is clear. after all if uk underground music were being marketed in america it wouldn't be very underground, would it?

some really great stuff in the early nineties. aside from mbv, there was lush, pale saints, curve, stereolab, some brilliant cocteau twins and morrissey, and not as good but entertaining the stone roses and happy mondays.

americans love their oasis too. bros at my college, which was in gettysburg pennsylvania, would listen to wonderwall every time they smoked weed, as a kind of ritual. they were more unguarded about their affection for one another when this song was playing as well.

one year passes...

for some reason I was listening to the last Oasis album for the first time a couple days ago (I blame spotify and boredom).
It was bad, as expected.
but it actually reminded me a little of GnR's "Chinese Democracy".
Obviously, I don't know these albums enough to elaborate but there's something in the production/sound on some parts (I may not go as far as comparing the songwriting since I'm not sure there are actual songs !).

As for this thread in general, I haven't read it all but there's clearly an interesting parallel between these two bands. except oasis produced more albums. and therefore more crap !
