You left 'Patchouli Hemp Caresses' off the tracklisting.

so far not a lot of standout moments for me, but i love the pretty, reich-ish arpeggio sections, like whatever song starts at 33:00.

love the in media res beginning too (fake jungle rush alert, although it's 160)

kool fm is so dope, excited for this
― the late great, Thursday, 3 October 2013 19:07 (eleven years ago)
So I'm not entirely sure what this is; short songs, not dancefloor focused, often feels lacking in melody, not ambient, not especially beautiful... Some of it is very nice indeed but I'm left feeling a little shortchanged so far.

yeah me too!
four tet's eight rinse set was epic though

warming up to this now

This is going to be a busy fall for the adventurous dance producer Four Tet, who produced all of Syrian singer Omar Souleyman's forthcoming album Wenu Wenu

Are you really that nonplussed by it? It doesn't feel any less dancefloor focussed than, say, a Field or Gold Panda album. In fact that whole middle section - from Kool Aid through to Aerial, feels pretty dancey. Or at least, he's putting house and techno and various post-garage genres through his usual aural hipstamatic filter.
I can understand feeling disappointed if "beauty" is all you go to Four Tet for but this is rhythmically and texturally interesting enough as it is. I'm usually faintly irritated by the doe eyes that Four Tet records usually seem to be pulling, so I'm quite happy with one that makes you work a bit harder.

What's the deal with the distribution of this?
My local independent record shop seem (genuinely) upset not to be stocking the album.
― djh, Friday, 18 October 2013 18:07 (eleven years ago)
I've seen it on the shelves where I am.
I'm also underwhelmed. Seems to me the album is a bit of blur until the HEY HEY HEY, which is annoyingly mixed way too loud and ruins Kool FM for me
― octobeard, Friday, 18 October 2013 18:27 (eleven years ago)
LOL HEY HEY HEY is the whole point of kool fm
― the late great, Friday, 18 October 2013 19:53 (eleven years ago)
currently digging parallel jalebi and aerial a lot
― the late great, Friday, 18 October 2013 19:54 (eleven years ago)
Aerial is... weirdly grimey.
― Matt DC, Saturday, 19 October 2013 11:17 (eleven years ago)
this album is so boring. what DO people see in four tet again?
― lex pretend, Monday, 21 October 2013 07:28 (eleven years ago)
havent heard either but the paul woolford special request thing pwns this surely
― r|t|c, Monday, 21 October 2013 07:44 (eleven years ago)
I keep meaning to listen to that given I like pretty much everything Woolford has put his name to with the exception of his actual album, which is pretty clunky.
― Matt DC, Monday, 21 October 2013 08:52 (eleven years ago)
3 day xpost to Matt: any nonplussed-ness was only temporary as I was getting to grips with it, I think. Pretty much in full agreement with what you're saying now.

the special request album is quite different to this
― the late great, Monday, 21 October 2013 18:15 (eleven years ago)
but also excellent
Finally got this. Initial feeling is that I'm missing the usual beauty. Need to live with it for a bit.

this mix is pretty great, and it presents the new tracks well:https://soundcloud.com/four-tet/live-in-tokyo

the last five tracks on this record slay. maybe they should have been the first five?
― festival culture (Jordan), Tuesday, 10 December 2013 15:03 (eleven years ago)
HEY HEY HEY
― the late great, Tuesday, 10 December 2013 16:07 (eleven years ago)
that too
― festival culture (Jordan), Tuesday, 10 December 2013 16:14 (eleven years ago)
Yeah, this album takes a while to get going. The first three tracks feel like doodles compared to what comes later.

as someone who finds a lot of his stuff beautiful but bland and a bit too samey/pretty, i like this album a lot. its dancey, but very detailed, structurally, but without it sounding anal. its the sort of thing he does better than i ever imagined he could/would.
