The Aging Alternative Canon

By this point, there is a significant amount of recent material by 80s and 90s alternative acts. What are the best records? To qualify, they have to be 40+ when they made it, in the last 10 years.

My favorite is Lee Ranaldo, Between The Times and the Tides.

The Obliterati by Mission of Burma is better IMO

Dino Jr reunion has been surprisingly fruitful

You talking original / reformed bands still making records or people from the scene in new bands? If the latter counts then Off!

Grant hart

You pieces of shit. (jjjusten), Wednesday, 24 July 2013 05:36 (twelve years ago)

Greg Dulli's Twilight Singers - Powder Burns is a pretty good record. Still haven't heard the last one, but both of those were made in his 40s.

Nick Cave with Grinderman and the Bad Seeds has been working as much as ever in the past decade. I haven't heard enough to qualify compared to the earlier records, but what I have has been of similar quality to his classic records.

the latest Ultrasound record ain't bad at all and there's no way those peeps aren't all 40+

Early returns yet, but the new Grant Hart record is surely a good candidate for this thread.

I've only picked it up recently, but I'm liking Funplex - a surprisingly solid return from the B-52s.

Do people care or rate highly enough Bob Mould's Silver Age?

Master of Treacle, Wednesday, 24 July 2013 16:32 (twelve years ago)

Off! is a pretty good call.

There's a bunch I wish I could include like the latest Oblivians and Redd Kross records - but honestly I never listen to them.

brio, Wednesday, 24 July 2013 16:36 (twelve years ago)

I thought about suggesting "The Silver Age" but while it is truly a return to form, it hasn't made me love it like many other old punk's work. Also:

Killing Joke - Killing Joke 2003

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Wednesday, 24 July 2013 17:09 (twelve years ago)

It passed unnoticed here, but the last Eyeless In Gaza album (Everyone Feels Like A Stranger) was fantastic. Think I've enjoyed the second half of their career heaps more than the old 'classic' stuff a lot of which for me is either too shrill and dissonant (post-punk phase) or too upbeat and cheesy (indie pop phase). The more recent stuff from about 1995 onwards is a lot more meditative and droney and has more of a spooky folk quality to it. Great band, hope they never stop making records.

who killfiled cock robin? (NickB), Wednesday, 24 July 2013 17:22 (twelve years ago)

The last dB's album had some excellent material on it.

The Obliterati is seriously a candidate for best MoB album.

Swans - "The Seer" [if we don't rule out bands with substantial lineup changes]
Mekons - "Natural" ["OOOH (Out of Our Heads)" is probably the stronger album, but misses the ten-year cutoff]
Bark Psychosis - "Codename: Dustsucker"

Not sure picking a compilation mostly comprising material from the 70s-90s is in the spirit of this thread.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 25 July 2013 11:43 (twelve years ago)

How about Wild Billy Childish & The Musicians Of The British Empire - Punk Rock At The British Legion Hall instead?

American Music Club's The Golden Age is really one of the best of this field imo - gorgeous throughout, so aching - plus, Eitzel's schtick was always "youth is passing/has passed me by" backward-looking wistful/yearning stuff - it's only grown richer with time

I was waiting for that old chestnut to pop out. You can't have an alt rock thread without some white guilt.

1914 is probably the best Buff Medways album, I thought it was more than 10 years old but it came out in 2003 so you can have that one ;)
