there's such a gap between the styles on intelligent hoodlum/saga of a hoodlum and against all odds that's jarring against the overall sound of them: a lot of memorable banalities and "tragedy's on the mic my flow is ill / my microphone got bullets i'm gonna kill / all the wack mcs"-type of raps. i remember why i never really got into early trag.

the great dj hollywood piano loop beat on "grand groove" off saga of a hoodlum-- when i hear that beat i automatically hear the opening mega bars: "i'm sick of gossiping bitches and niggas who gossip like bitches / claiming they live but if you pop them they snitching," but i forget that tragedy opens it with "i get funky like a monkey that ain't washed in years" and other memorable banalities.

just copped Against All Odds from Amazon and this truly might be the best 2001 release I never heard at the time.

also really not used to hearing Ja Rule actually rap a verse rather than that grunt'n'sing he does. granted I know he actually did this, but I mostly just heard his singles in the 2000s.
