what a MONSTER year, might be my favorite of the 1970's so far.

Bee OK, Thursday, 25 July 2013 01:30 (twelve years ago)

Yeah it's kind of crazy.

_Rudipherous_, Thursday, 25 July 2013 01:34 (twelve years ago)

Bee OK, Thursday, 25 July 2013 01:36 (twelve years ago)

Not feeling this year so much. Would probably vote Future Days, partly to avoid voting for Steely Dan two years in a row.

o. nate, Thursday, 25 July 2013 01:39 (twelve years ago)

Eno just barely over Cale and Roxy. Definitely a tremendous pre-punk year.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 25 July 2013 01:59 (twelve years ago)

Voting for Stevie over Elton, but the Skynyrd, Isley's and Little Feat below the 25 are pretty great too.

jetfan, Thursday, 25 July 2013 02:15 (twelve years ago)

If it weren't for Quadrophenia, I'd vote for Stevie or Roxy or Eno or Mott or Al.

Esperanto, why don't you come to your senses? (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 25 July 2013 02:32 (twelve years ago)

Presently conducting a one-man TS: Innervisions vs. Houses of the Holy.

Warm Jets

schlock corridor (WilliamC), Thursday, 25 July 2013 03:07 (twelve years ago)

here are my picks for the year (lots of great prog this year - also I feel that Innervisions would make it but I've never heard it in full)

1. Todd Rundgren - A Wizard, a True Star (how was this not in the top 25?)
2. Magma - Mekanik Destrukiw Kommandoh
3. Can - Future Days
4. King Crimson - Lark's Tongues in Aspic
5. ELP - Brain Salad Surgery
6. Faust IV
7. Genesis - Selling England by the Pound
8. Triumvirat - Illusions on a Double Dimple
9. Brian Eno - Here Come the Warm Jets
10. Peter Hammill - Chameleon in the Shadow of Night

frogbs, Thursday, 25 July 2013 03:10 (twelve years ago)

Sad that I'm not able to vote for Head Hunters.

Boven is het stil (Eric H.), Thursday, 25 July 2013 03:21 (twelve years ago)

isn't that number 16?

Bee OK, Thursday, 25 July 2013 03:27 (twelve years ago)

Sad that I'm voting for something else obvious that deserves it more.

Boven is het stil (Eric H.), Thursday, 25 July 2013 03:28 (twelve years ago)

oh, that is what you mean

Bee OK, Thursday, 25 July 2013 03:29 (twelve years ago)

i could easily vote for any of these: Here Come the Warm Jets, Houses of the Holy, Innervisions, Quadrophenia, Raw Power, Let's Get It On, For Your Pleasure, Countdown to Ecstasy or The Dark Side of the Moon.

Bee OK, Thursday, 25 July 2013 03:35 (twelve years ago)

I love Can and Herbie and Eno and a lot of things on here but this has to be Stevie.

loosely inspired by Dr. Dre (crüt), Thursday, 25 July 2013 03:42 (twelve years ago)

New York Dolls. They got one vote in the '74 poll--they were such a big deal around the time I caught up with punk, but they seem to gone back to being forgotten. (The two recent albums probably chipped away at whatever mystique they had left.) My second pick would be Paris 1919. The American Graffiti soundtrack influenced me as much as anything on the list.

clemenza, Thursday, 25 July 2013 04:15 (twelve years ago)

voted Fresh. the cover photo alone seems like a triumph of the human spirit after the apocalyptic "there's a riot goin' on".

Treeship, Thursday, 25 July 2013 04:19 (twelve years ago)

could have voted eno.... tbh that album has probably meant more to me over the years. i hope quadrophenia received zero votes.

Treeship, Thursday, 25 July 2013 04:25 (twelve years ago)

Headhunters with competition from Eno and Zep. Rundgren would be up there too.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Thursday, 25 July 2013 04:27 (twelve years ago)

some great albums here but Innervisions just towers above the rest

( (brimstead), Thursday, 25 July 2013 04:30 (twelve years ago)

Also want to send some praise to the "Mott" album. I didn't vote for it, but if you haven't heard it, go give it a stream.

jetfan, Thursday, 25 July 2013 04:40 (twelve years ago)

It has to be Here Come The Warm Jets, that album is perfect.

Marvin Gaye, Lou Reed, Stevie Wonder, Can and Roxy Music would be up there too.

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 25 July 2013 05:20 (twelve years ago)

Sad that I'm not able to vote for Head Hunters.

Esperanto, why don't you come to your senses? (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 25 July 2013 14:02 (twelve years ago)

Voted for Dark Side because Pink Floyd Rules but probably should have voted for John Cale.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 25 July 2013 14:04 (twelve years ago)

oh good god. this is a fucking year. i feel that i am morally obliged to vote for:

Stevie Wonder - Innervisions
Iggy and The Stooges - Raw Power
New York Dolls - New York Dolls
Marvin Gaye - Let's Get It On
Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells
Eno - Here Come the Warm Jets
Herbie Hancock - Head Hunters
Can - Future Days
Sly and the Family Stone - Fresh

all of them. how how how can i choose? it's like trying to decide which liver i could do without.

IIIrd Datekeeper (contenderizer), Thursday, 25 July 2013 14:39 (twelve years ago)

If you have more than one liver, you can probably do without at least one of them.

Boven is het stil (Eric H.), Thursday, 25 July 2013 14:40 (twelve years ago)

but that's the problem see

IIIrd Datekeeper (contenderizer), Thursday, 25 July 2013 14:42 (twelve years ago)

giving it to stevie, but not without regrets

IIIrd Datekeeper (contenderizer), Thursday, 25 July 2013 14:42 (twelve years ago)

I didn't know Stevie needed a new liver.

Boven is het stil (Eric H.), Thursday, 25 July 2013 14:43 (twelve years ago)

Wow. Easier to pick the one or two I don't like.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 25 July 2013 14:46 (twelve years ago)

IIIrd Datekeeper (contenderizer), Thursday, 25 July 2013 14:48 (twelve years ago)

Quadrophenia. Steely Dan #2, my favorite album of theirs (King of the World rules). Would have voted Sabbath Bloody Sabbath if it were on there.

Dark Side Of The Moon.

I wanna live like C'MOWN! people (Turrican), Thursday, 25 July 2013 15:50 (twelve years ago)

Album I listened to the most at the time: Floyd (I'll confess!) Album I've listened to the most overall: probably Roxy. Current fave and likely vote: Eno.

Byron E. Coli (Dan Peterson), Thursday, 25 July 2013 15:50 (twelve years ago)

Even The Wings album is not bad. But this was also actually an easy choice for me. (I did not vote for McCartney.)

_Rudipherous_, Thursday, 25 July 2013 15:57 (twelve years ago)

Future Days! Best Can-album, easily, such a masterpiece. But Cale and Roxy isn't far behind.

Frederik B, Thursday, 25 July 2013 17:25 (twelve years ago)

fucking john motherfucking bonham for the motherfucking win.

what a year ..
really struggling to single out one.

mark e, Thursday, 25 July 2013 18:57 (twelve years ago)

Innervisions is one of my favourite albums of all time but Cale, Roxy, Eno, John Martyn, Al Green and the Stooges were all on fire in 73, and Fresh may not be peak Sly but it's close.

guess I'll be the lonely vote for John Martyn since this is probably my favorite album of his. Mind you i could vote for Innervisions for the same reason.

Lee626, Friday, 26 July 2013 08:03 (twelve years ago)

Nobody else going for Aladdin Sane?

paolo, Friday, 26 July 2013 08:51 (twelve years ago)

Haha Xgau gave Berlin a C. Goat's Head Soup & Brothers and Sisters came out that year too.

The soul records owned the year though, I voted for Marvin's.

^ this. I love both, but Stranded is my all-time favorite Roxy record. I think Eno even said it's their masterpiece.

Esperanto, why don't you come to your senses? (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 26 July 2013 13:56 (twelve years ago)

There you go Mr. Bowie - Paolo will love Aladdin Sane! After 40 years that must come as quite a relief. Whew.

rage over a lost empire (rattled), Friday, 26 July 2013 14:27 (twelve years ago)

What a golden age. I'll say Can: one of my most-played albums ever. I used to listen to it every night.

Träumerei, Friday, 26 July 2013 14:42 (twelve years ago)

Seven of these are my favourite albums by those artists. I like Aladdin Sane a lot but no way is it my favourite Bowie.

Deafening silence (DL), Friday, 26 July 2013 14:45 (twelve years ago)

Top 5:

Countdown to Ecstasy
Paris 1919
Innervisions
Future Days
Houses of the Holy

Favourite album missing from the 50: ZZ Top - Tres Hombres

Gavin, Leeds, Friday, 26 July 2013 16:16 (twelve years ago)

i love that frogbs and know it rules. i, however, have hot heard even one of those albums. so much to still learn.

Where does raw power fit into the ilm iggy pop canon? I'd put it as the best thing he did with the stooges but sometimes only fun house will satisfy my stooges craving. Lust for Life is, i think, the masterpiece. 1,000,000 commercials and film trailers can't ruin "the passenger" for me.

fervently nice (Treeship), Saturday, 27 July 2013 03:54 (twelve years ago)

― fervently nice (Treeship), Friday, July 26, 2013 8:54 PM (Yesterday)

raw power's the most accessible & popular ("dog" notwithstanding), but afaic, it's the stooges at their least. for ages i'd have said funhouse crushes the rest like insects beneath its giant greasy ass-boot. which is true. these days, though, in my banana softened dotage, i'm just as likely to spin the debut.

lust for life is a great pop album, but so different in spirit as to render comparisons pointless. still, i'll always take the stoochis over solo iggy.

IIIrd Datekeeper (contenderizer), Saturday, 27 July 2013 16:35 (twelve years ago)

i don't know if there is anything in music more satisfying than iggy yelling "No Walls!" on Down on the Street. but i love iggy in sinister mode and "gimme danger" is ace in that regard. impossible to choose between those.

as for lust for life, that album is just one of the best in my view. from the cover to the lyrics of the title track it's totally punk in spirit. it's only pop in the sense of each of the songs having catchy melodies.

fervently nice (Treeship), Saturday, 27 July 2013 16:41 (twelve years ago)

maybe there is no single "best" iggy pop album.

fervently nice (Treeship), Saturday, 27 July 2013 16:42 (twelve years ago)

lotta worst though

IIIrd Datekeeper (contenderizer), Saturday, 27 July 2013 16:48 (twelve years ago)

i love iggy in sinister mode and "gimme danger" is ace in that regard.

no doubt, it's up there with "dirt" & "open up and bleed". raw power's a great album, don't get me wrong. but the competition is hard to beat (sorry).

IIIrd Datekeeper (contenderizer), Saturday, 27 July 2013 16:52 (twelve years ago)

Cale

Chris L, Saturday, 27 July 2013 17:01 (twelve years ago)

i don't like that album for whatever reason. it seems like the kind of thing i would love -- i love the velvet underground -- but it just doesn't click.

fervently nice (Treeship), Saturday, 27 July 2013 17:03 (twelve years ago)

I know it was an extremely strong year but can't quite believe 'A WIzard, A True Star' isn't in there somewhere...
