DOOM Reunion/Comeback Albums

The snipes at Black Sabbath's 13 continue, such as this recent gem from MetalSucks -- "Black Sabbath fans have been left with two choices. We can either a) keep complaining about the overhyped pile of slightly-above-satisfactory riffs and embarrassing lyrics that is 13, or b) we can embrace the great onslaught of today’s Sabbath-worshipping bands who are doing early Sabbath better than Sabbath currently are..." I still don't understand what people expected from Sabbath, that they surpass Vol. 4? I've been listening to a playlist of the albums below, and it seems a more appropriate context and benchmark to measure 13 by. It seems nearly every traditional doom band has put out something recently except for The Obsessed. So which will actually come out on top?

Mythical & Magical was the last Pagan Altar (and their best)
Candlemass was with Messiah and was awesome.
Alone was great.
Simple Mind Condition was a bit meh (theres a new album btw)
Last Rites was shite.
Lillie:f-65 was terrific.

I shouldn't have put Lord Vicar in there, as it was their first one, oops! Lords of Hypocrisy was a reunion/comeback album, Mythical & Magical was not. I liked Last Rites much better than Lillie: F-65!

Last Rites was dreadful!

Yr crazy! BTW, The Obsessed did reunite for Roadburn and Maryland Death Fest, so there is some hope for a reunion album..

Fastnbulbous, Friday, 26 July 2013 21:58 (twelve years ago)

We need a Goatsnake reunion too

have only heard the 13 and the new saint vitus. both decent, 13's more ambitious and impressive, but i've gotten a lot more use out of lillie.

Ah crap. I don't suppose an admin/mod is able to substitute Bedemon - Symphony Of Shadows (2012) for the Lord Vicar?

I did not know there was a new Dream Death album.

all other cassettes are better off crushed (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Sunday, 28 July 2013 06:06 (twelve years ago)

As much as I truly like 13, I'm going with Candlemass here. That is hands down the best reunion album I've ever heard by any band.

Been listening to them all week and 13 is holding up well, though Candelmass is definitely challenging.

Iron Man has been signed to Rise Above!

eight months pass...

I'd forgotten this one:

Revelation - Release (Leaf Hound, 2008)

Shadow Kingdom just reissued this band's first album, Salvation's Answer (Rise Above, 1991). The mp3s I had didn't sound too great, hopefully the reissue is an improvement. They later incorporated some Italian style prog on Never Comes Silence (Hellhound, 1992) and ...Yet So Far (Hellhound, 1995). They released three more albums from 2009-12.

I'm of course lovin the shit out of this:

Blood Farmers - Headless Eyes (Resurrection, 2014)
NYC doom, occult/horror, influenced Electric Wizard. Self-titled full-length came out in 1995 on Hellhound, but their 1991 demo Permanent Brain Damage is a trip too!

There have been some rumors of albums coming from Sleep, Spirit Caravan and Goatsnake! If that happens, maybe I'll do the poll again and get 10 votes!

two months pass...

Las Cruces - Dusk (Metal Rising, 2010)

This was the San Antonio doom band's first album in 12 years since Ringmaster (1998). I just listened to them for the first time after missing them at Days of the Doomed IV -- they headlined Friday and I could only make it for Saturday.

Also at Days of the Doomed was Orodruin. If they do another album it would be their first since Epicurean Mass (2003). Still no solid news on any Obsessed/Sleep/Spirit Caravan/Goatsnake recording activity.
