Word going around from Wilko Johnson and others. A friend on FB:
yep, Mick Farren has left the building. Collapsed onstage & died last night. Deeply shocked & upset here, natch. Just can't believe it.

He did — he was our first Tash: we called him and he came. I guess that won't happen again :(

Slap the cuffs on our Julie? My dear Mark S., you perceive but the vulgar fraction. Spanking is a classic dud, but decadence always a higher calling. Now I hit submit to post. It's all in the language, dog. -- Mick Farren― Mick Farren, Friday, July 27, 2001 12:00 AM (12 years ago)

Ugly Things essay on the dangers of hiring a keyboard player for your band may just be my fave writing of his. Got to meet him several times over the years....

This is sad, he was cool. I've read quite a few of Mick Farren's science fiction books, I thought they were great. They are fun reads and have some humor, which is something so many SF/Fantasy writers just lack.

Just finished his autobiography 'Give the Anarchist a Cigarette' over the last three days, reading it compulsively on kindle and iphone in any spare moment in coffee shops, cafes and the tube etc.
It reminded me a little of George Melly's autobiographies: slices of life recalled in surprisingly good observational detail through a mellow haze of good humour (and probably alcohol), and a relaxed view of his own follies.
I was interested to see he had made the Melly connection himself:
(from a 2011 interview) "I came here (the US) not only to flee Thatcher, but I felt that if I'd stayed in England, I would have become...do you know who George Melly is? Well, he really just kinda became a TV clown. He would come on wearing these silly suits, and it was a bit distasteful. And I could see that was the future. So I left for New York, where at the time, shit was really happening."
