four years pass...

their streamed Slowly We Rot set was really awesome.

they had their usual stage lighting, the mix was great, the band was performing with lots of energy like they had a crowd, and had a good sense of humor. worth the spend.

recommend checking out the Cause of Death one next week (it also stays up on demand if you can't watch it live, for a little while).

Cause of Death set is even better in many ways

Where do you stand on the Cause of Death/Slowly We Rot/The End Complete run?

Do you have a consistent favorite or does it change?

I like all of the first four albums a lot. i've grown fairly attached to Slowly/Cause cos they were the first two I listened to (I found a twofer set used). between the two though, usually my favorite is which one I'm currently playing. World Demise and End Complete are really good too, a little less heavy, a little more 'groove'-y, which they do a really good job of, and which kind of influenced their post-reunion material.

I was surprised to find out from a friend who was 'there' at the time that apparently a lot of fans considered Cause of Death a letdown from Slowly. feels weird to me - they're both part of the same Celtic Frost-cum-death metal formula, and Cause is just about as savage. probably the only misstep = having a goddamn "Circle of the Tyrants" cover which is fine but completely unnecessary.

I will say the downside to the limited scope of their formula is that it didn't give them much of anywhere to go, and it started to feel a little too domesticated. not that I don't like the stuff from Frozen in Time onward, but it tends to get old faster. I am completely sick to death of "Redneck Stomp" - it's a good song, but they had it as their set opener for too long.

as for newer material, Inked in Blood was kind of eh. it wasn't bad, but none of the songs really did much for me. the latest one, though, the self-titled, while not amazing, is actually quite good. they added some ear-wormy stuff to the sound and it actually helps a bit!

I am kind of spoiled, they play(ed) Florida all of the time, so I've seen them more than almost any other live band in the last decade.

fun fact - the latest Obituary is the only one Pitchfork has reviewed, lol...

Cheers for that...yeah, I dunno, it’s like the ‘Chaos AD’ argument, maybe to a less dramatic extent where a lot of heads fell off once there was anything resembling groove in the metal

Tbh in retrospect I have no idea what is was like in that sort of 88-92 period where you were getting masterpieces out of so many death/thrash bands; maybe for some heads at the time they may have realised that experimentation was expected in the aftermath, but that it wouldn’t be the same? Like, some level of intensity or singularity would be lost amid whatever was to come next

the new one dropped. first song is probably one of the best openers I've heard from them in years. hopefully this will replace the played out "Redneck Stomp" as the opener at shows.

this new one might be my fav of all of the post-2005 reunion albums. I liked the one before this as well, but this one seems sharper songwriting wise.

I still miss the really dank slow-as-molasses CF-ish doom riffs on the first four albums - nowadays they prefer to oscillate between mid-tempo groove and fast scorcher, without ever doing the whole "grind to a halt" doom riffs. but this is a quality effort. not stylistically different, just sharper songwriting wise.

I need to give this one another listen — as of now, I like the 2017 s/t better. It's definitely a really good record; the gross fuzz bass on the title track absolutely destroys. But I think my problem is that John Tardy's too prominent in the mix and you can understand him too easily. I had the same problem with the last Eyehategod album. Mike Williams is supposed to sound like an indecipherable jabbering maniac, and instead he sounded like...Keith Morris.

but also fuck you (unperson), Friday, 13 January 2023 23:54 (three years ago)

yeah I do miss when Tardy was just an indecipherable roar

fentanyl young (Neanderthal), Saturday, 14 January 2023 00:11 (three years ago)

on "The Wrong Time" it sounds like he's shouting "Roll Tide".

I also find the low crescendo roar trick that he does 300 times on this (which appears to be a cut/paste each time) kind of amusing.

but still enjoying tf out of it.

Obituary are doing a crazy 5 shows in FL mini tour which started yesterday, including Pompano Beach, Orlando (tonight), two shows in Tampa (one a classics set, the other the new album front to back), and one more in who gives a fuck ever.

i'm only going to tonight's. really hoping for once "Redneck Stomp" doesn't open. not a bad song, but incredibly overrated song, and there are much better openers they could choose.

man, they were so good last night. played Cause of Death in entirety (wild as they didn't announce they were doing it until the day of the show), plus other regulars.

i go back and forth on Obituary, like for years I couldn't bear to watch them again because i'd seen them so many times and the setlist never changed but the last few years I haven't seen them as much as they've been welcome to my ears.

it was extremely loud, the light show was awesome, Jon Tardy was amped up, the crowd was sold out, and it was in Tampa, so a homecoming show.

i am done with shows for the year after going to 8 in the last 3 weeks.
