imo this is the masterpiece. hard for me to vote against "sick as a dog," terrible "you/loo" rhyme and all - for me a big part of the classic aerosmith run's appeal is how possessed steven tyler can sound - this reaches its apex in the last verse of "draw the line" but some combination of the performance & the mic/mic pres & the mix really make "sick as a dog" special. like on some of those "pleeeeaaaase"s it sounds like his jaw is shaking from his mouth being opened too wide or his teeth clenched too hard or something. still, though, the hits are hits for a reason: "back in the saddle" sounds incredible, "last child" is absolutely perfect.

feel like we did this already and 'combination" had a crowd of partisans, no?

god gonna repeat a lot of things i've done in other aerosmith and rocks threads but idk if r.e.m. would exist without "sick as a dog"

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

"Rats in the Cellar" for me. that song is insanely rockin', probably one of the most 'metally' things they did in the 70s.

close second "Nobody's Fault".

and Tyler's singing "sweathog ready to make a silk purse/from a J Paul Getty and his ear" is Caruso level.

"na na na" chorus on "lick and a promise" is properly exhilarating after all that subterranean crawling

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 03:08 (twelve years ago)

BradNelson's "Sick as a Dog"/R.E.M. comparison is p. good - appropriately, I've never cared much for either one.

mix on this record is a real dark wonder but it hits some kind of exquisite entropy on "combination," which i've decided is my vote

so hard and it's obvious but goddamn back in the saddle

"sweet sassafrassy" rhyme makes it even better (Freddy Cannon never thought of that one!) Tyler really had a gift for syllables.

“Nobody’s Fault” by a zillion miles. Why no one reps for this song is an eternal mystery to me. Apocalyptic proto-Sunset Strip badassness

it's weird how you don't think the album can possibly get any better than it is already and then "lick and a promise" happens

american bradass (BradNelson), Monday, 23 September 2019 23:29 (five years ago)

or you listen to the opening of "Home Tonight," assume it'll be a boring Tyler attempt to repeat the glories of "Dream On," and holy shit

I never really paid any mind to Aerosmith, and hadn't heard anything off of it but "Back in the Saddle", but I have ILM to thank for getting me to listen to this album. It's SO good.

I find the lack of hyperbole in this thread curious.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 24 September 2019 13:40 (five years ago)

Somehow I missed this.

I was an indie snob and looked down my nose at Aerosmith. Then I heard this record and it was pretty much the only thing I played for a straight year.

kornrulez6969, Tuesday, 24 September 2019 17:55 (five years ago)

Thread inspired me to pull this back out. I still narrowly prefer TitA but this one is a close second. Can't fathom how anyone could have voted for "Get The Lead Out," though, which to me is the very definition of a filler track, and is one of only two songs on this album I don't love ("Home Tonight" is the other). Missed the poll but I'd be pretty torn between "Last Child," "Lick & A Promise," and "Sick as a Dog" (which pretty much invents Royal Trux, no?)

Paul Ponzi, Friday, 27 September 2019 18:54 (five years ago)

I think Back In the Saddle is better than anything else, but two things here: 1) It's really an accomplishment in itself that the album can hold it after such an opener; and 2) I think Back in the Saddle must be better than practically anything else not just in this album but in any album, not just of this band but of any band.

cpl593H, Friday, 27 September 2019 19:08 (five years ago)

"Sick as a Dog" (which pretty much invents Royal Trux, no?)

They do have a song called “Sickazz Dog”; not sure if the title is a tribute…

Despite the RTX & R.E.M. references, to me this song just sounds like… Aerosmith, lol

Wet Legume (morrisp), Sunday, 11 December 2022 18:32 (two years ago)

Sick as a dog is not that great of a tune but it’s the kind of thing they tried really hard to create again around Permanent vacation

calstars, Sunday, 11 December 2022 18:36 (two years ago)

Having now listened to the album a few times through, I'd say "Get the Lead Out" is my favorite... kinda interesting song. (I do hear some RTX in that and "Combination," fwiw)

Overall, the band's playing isn't as tight as I was expecting; but it's also not appealingly "loose" to my ears (it doesn't really swing)... it kind of occupies a "stiff" middle ground? Idk
