Spread far and wide...

Ned Raggett, Monday, 5 August 2013 12:45 (twelve years ago)

Quick immediate apology that the SoundCloud link is being VERY weird/fussy right now. Will look at it later but I have to go into work.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 5 August 2013 12:47 (twelve years ago)

downloading omg

a blessing and an inspiration (flamboyant goon tie included), Monday, 5 August 2013 12:56 (twelve years ago)

I don't mind that you've used it for these pre-cover projects but just FYI I'm not really using the Fuguguffu name anymore

staind in the place where you live (crüt), Monday, 5 August 2013 12:56 (twelve years ago)

huh so is Spotify mangling my MP3 or did I do a terrible job mastering this ;_;

THE WORINÐLVE (DJP), Monday, 5 August 2013 13:43 (twelve years ago)

Sounds OK here (I downloaded the album from sendspace)

slamming on the dubstep brakes (snoball), Monday, 5 August 2013 13:44 (twelve years ago)

the beginning and end definitely sound glitchy but I don't know if that is because I am playing it through Spotify or if it really starts/ends that way (the ending probably yes, not sure about the beginning)

btw who is Gypsy Chips, because A+infinity for channeling Twitch-era Ministry

THE WORINÐLVE (DJP), Monday, 5 August 2013 13:46 (twelve years ago)

does "Everything" end with a sample of a sink draining? lololol

stellar work so far, everyone

THE WORINÐLVE (DJP), Monday, 5 August 2013 13:55 (twelve years ago)

crut: noted! Sorry, I thought you were still using it as a backup there.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 5 August 2013 14:35 (twelve years ago)

holy shit DJP

da croupier, Monday, 5 August 2013 14:47 (twelve years ago)

i'm taking a break after the first side (#1-8) but man that was strong. Almost sounds like 4AD Pre-Covers NIN's "Hesitation Marks", in part because the pace suggests real Ivo Watts-Russell consideration on Ned's part, even if we know people were calling dibs on a web forum.

da croupier, Monday, 5 August 2013 15:04 (twelve years ago)

We should get Wim Wenders to build a movie around this soundtrack

da croupier, Monday, 5 August 2013 15:08 (twelve years ago)

we should tweet this to Trent, right

THE WORINÐLVE (DJP), Monday, 5 August 2013 15:29 (twelve years ago)

Hahah if someone wants to do the honors...

Ned Raggett, Monday, 5 August 2013 15:33 (twelve years ago)

This is very good. These projects rock.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 5 August 2013 15:39 (twelve years ago)

done and done

THE WORINÐLVE (DJP), Monday, 5 August 2013 15:39 (twelve years ago)

omg snoball

da croupier, Monday, 5 August 2013 16:22 (twelve years ago)

ok i thought side 1 would be hard to beat but three tracks in to side 2 (#9-14) and this is outstanding

da croupier, Monday, 5 August 2013 16:26 (twelve years ago)

I think this may be the high water mark of the pre-covers. Kudos to all.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 5 August 2013 16:30 (twelve years ago)

100%. Just finished it and the pacing was perfect.

da croupier, Monday, 5 August 2013 16:41 (twelve years ago)

I was completely out of it last night when I gave it a test listen through so today after work I will properly zone out to it.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 5 August 2013 16:45 (twelve years ago)

I love everything on here; I don't want to single any particular song out because they are all awesome but I will say that Trayce's nerves on the other thread were SO SO SO unfounded

THE WORINÐLVE (DJP), Monday, 5 August 2013 17:07 (twelve years ago)

as was your self-deprecation re your guitar playing

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 5 August 2013 17:10 (twelve years ago)

haha thanks, but what you're hearing is basically me looping myself after I managed to play a given phrase cleanly

also there's a reason there are no chords in there

THE WORINÐLVE (DJP), Monday, 5 August 2013 17:13 (twelve years ago)

three quarters through and as always, it's a surprising mix of styles... most people's tracks were waaaay more serious, musical and professional than my joke effort (I did the Gypsy Chips one DJP).. Never Embers and snoball are seriously great...

Stop the tape I got spittle all over my moustache. (Talcum Mucker), Monday, 5 August 2013 17:20 (twelve years ago)

I love everything on here; I don't want to single any particular song out because they are all awesome but I will say that Trayce's nerves on the other thread were SO SO SO unfounded

x2

pplains, Monday, 5 August 2013 17:22 (twelve years ago)

i am not going to say my track is the best one but i think i definitely did the most shredding

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 5 August 2013 17:25 (twelve years ago)

really disappointed in how little shredding there is on this overall tbh

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 5 August 2013 17:25 (twelve years ago)

you and adrian belew

da croupier, Monday, 5 August 2013 17:26 (twelve years ago)

yeah Trayce yours is super lovely. Everyone else is also sounding cool on my quick flick through, can't wait to take on the full thing.

Merdeyeux, Monday, 5 August 2013 17:27 (twelve years ago)

brag all you want n/a, but I don't think you came anywhere close to my shredding. After all, this was my inspiration.

FUCK
Your love
I'm going to the club

^^^^ gonna be running through my head for a while

THE WORINÐLVE (DJP), Monday, 5 August 2013 17:40 (twelve years ago)

DJP's is great, pure haunted-Gahan-era Depeche

Ismael Klata, Monday, 5 August 2013 17:40 (twelve years ago)

gah it's even called 'haunted', I promise I had that thought independently

Ismael Klata, Monday, 5 August 2013 17:41 (twelve years ago)

2nd listen even better than the first - esp listening to it in one fell swoop

da croupier, Monday, 5 August 2013 18:42 (twelve years ago)

my dream is that trent actually listens to it, takes the breadth as a challenge to more fully explore the textures and palettes of his influences, and drops NIN's The White Album.

da croupier, Monday, 5 August 2013 18:44 (twelve years ago)

also that he calls in Ned to sit on the studio couch and answer the question "what would an ilxor do?" inna rick rubin stylee

da croupier, Monday, 5 August 2013 18:47 (twelve years ago)

ned like a mole

pplains, Monday, 5 August 2013 18:51 (twelve years ago)

I'd rather mod than give you a POLL

slamming on the dubstep brakes (snoball), Monday, 5 August 2013 18:53 (twelve years ago)

Oh dear. (Then again, that could be the dream worth chasing.)

"...and yeah there was that one MBV show I saw, that really inspired me, are you drinking that wine, thanks there, anyway yeah..."

Ned Raggett, Monday, 5 August 2013 18:56 (twelve years ago)

HOLY SHIT DJP.

Matt M., Monday, 5 August 2013 19:23 (twelve years ago)

omg you guys thanks! I just woke up to this haha. time to get a listen in.

It is like ganging up on Enya (Trayce), Monday, 5 August 2013 21:33 (twelve years ago)

Wow you're not fucking kidding abou DJP channeling Gahan on this. Thats amazing!

It is like ganging up on Enya (Trayce), Monday, 5 August 2013 22:10 (twelve years ago)

thanks everyone! (humblebrag: there was a point earlier this year where I was blasting Delta Machine on my computer and my wife came over and said "wow, you're getting really really good with Garageband")

THE WORINÐLVE (DJP), Monday, 5 August 2013 22:14 (twelve years ago)

loool

staind in the place where you live (crüt), Monday, 5 August 2013 22:14 (twelve years ago)

that is kind of a hilarious nu-Depeche zing

staind in the place where you live (crüt), Monday, 5 August 2013 22:15 (twelve years ago)

yeah, it's a little "omg thanks"/"wait did you accidentally diss my boys ;_;"

THE WORINÐLVE (DJP), Monday, 5 August 2013 22:16 (twelve years ago)

I wasnt zinging in the least!

It is like ganging up on Enya (Trayce), Monday, 5 August 2013 22:18 (twelve years ago)

My only bother is as always my mix is slightly low. I dont know why that keeps happening? I need to learn how to use Reaper better.

It is like ganging up on Enya (Trayce), Monday, 5 August 2013 22:18 (twelve years ago)

mine sounds like I threw it together in <2 hours which is true

staind in the place where you live (crüt), Monday, 5 August 2013 22:20 (twelve years ago)

I need to do that next round, the studio bills are killing me

Ismael Klata, Monday, 5 August 2013 22:21 (twelve years ago)

crut meant my wife, I think (I certainly did)

I don't know how Reaper works but GarageBand has a normalization feature that basically makes your output super quiet, so you have to reimport the quiet file and push it through some other filter to boost the volume (I got this tip via Google) so Reaper may do something similar?

THE WORINÐLVE (DJP), Monday, 5 August 2013 22:23 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, I was complaining to Ned about this last night - I think effectively GarageBand rebases everything to set your loudest track back to normal, so if you've mixed one track up it resets it to mid-volume and everything else comes out v. quiet. I gather djp's tip will be the solution, but sadly hadn't worked that out by deadline.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 5 August 2013 22:30 (twelve years ago)

Is how I understand it anyway, no doubt there's *technical wizardry* involved.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 5 August 2013 22:33 (twelve years ago)

Yeah Ive been using a normalize function on my vox at least, but Im not sure why the overall output is low, maybe i need to run it over the whole kaboodle. I use FLStudio for all my synth/drum work, and Reaper for guitar/bass/vocals. Still learning the ropes, only been doing this for a year or 2.

It is like ganging up on Enya (Trayce), Monday, 5 August 2013 23:16 (twelve years ago)

happy to master anything you do trayce, hit me up sometime

failed gravy (electricsound), Monday, 5 August 2013 23:36 (twelve years ago)

great work everyone btw, i'm impressed

failed gravy (electricsound), Monday, 5 August 2013 23:36 (twelve years ago)

Jim thats a really grand offer, thanks mate. Might hit you up sometime once I decide which of my recent tracks are worth mastering/redoing properly for a Bandcamp release (which I'm hoping to do eventually)

It is like ganging up on Enya (Trayce), Monday, 5 August 2013 23:44 (twelve years ago)

coolio

failed gravy (electricsound), Monday, 5 August 2013 23:46 (twelve years ago)

I love Turrican's bit, it segues nicely after mine and it sounds a bit like Tones on Tail.

It is like ganging up on Enya (Trayce), Monday, 5 August 2013 23:57 (twelve years ago)

LJ is that your missus singing?? She's good!

It is like ganging up on Enya (Trayce), Tuesday, 6 August 2013 01:02 (twelve years ago)

She is! I am a big fan of everyone's vocals actually, everything really matches well to their respective songs.

THE WORINÐLVE (DJP), Tuesday, 6 August 2013 02:03 (twelve years ago)

Yeah same. Such variety and it has just made me want to go and write even more awesome songs, now.

It is like ganging up on Enya (Trayce), Tuesday, 6 August 2013 02:11 (twelve years ago)

Yep, a talent she has usually hidden. Beats me. xps

These are really well thought-out from an initial listen, and yeah the whole thing flows like a badass. I really enjoy PP's minute of madness, feel it deserves a mention

imago, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 07:14 (twelve years ago)

Holy shit, I missed the unveiling of this! Going to give it a listen right now! :)

does "Everything" end with a sample of a sink draining? lololol

― THE WORINÐLVE (DJP), Monday, August 5, 2013 1:55 PM (Yesterday) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

Pitched down sample of a toilet flushing, but with beginning of the sound edited off :) There's also a floppy disk drive loading up, a sped-up sample of a chainsaw and a heavily pitched down sample of some people screaming on a rollercoaster.

I wanna live like C'MOWN! people (Turrican), Tuesday, 6 August 2013 19:14 (twelve years ago)

I just loved that, it came across as a track full of all of these sampled noises and then... the kitchen sink, too

THE WORINÐLVE (DJP), Tuesday, 6 August 2013 19:16 (twelve years ago)

aw, thanks, imago, you old stranger. one of these days, i may be able to submit something that doesn't have a young pup yelping in the background.

pplains, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 19:22 (twelve years ago)

Really enjoying this, guys!

Fetchboy, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 19:25 (twelve years ago)

I'm only five tracks in and this is fucking great so far! :D

I wanna live like C'MOWN! people (Turrican), Tuesday, 6 August 2013 19:31 (twelve years ago)

Right, just finished listening to all of that and my god is it hard to pick highlights, everyone has put in some sterling work here! My favourites on first listen were da croupier's, DJP's, Gypsy Chips, Never Embers, snoball's (absolutely love this one!) and Identify 9, but really, everything here is just fucking great. I also love the "fucked Pong machine" vibe of Mark's opener, the coda on the Glass Half Inserted track, and the way Ismael Klata's 'Satellite' has those synth trumpets at the end (which remind me of the ones from Depeche Mode track of the same name!?) ... Well done all, that was great to listen to! :)

I wanna live like C'MOWN! people (Turrican), Tuesday, 6 August 2013 20:12 (twelve years ago)

Well spotted! Those are they: sampled, chopped up and doubled.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 20:19 (twelve years ago)

Oh my goodness xps, my one has OUR dog yelping in it! End of the second chorus. The daft thing :)

imago, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 20:19 (twelve years ago)

oh yeah? what kind do you have? ours is one of those shorthair mutt breeds, possibly with some english bulldog or scottish terrier in him: http://i.imgur.com/HOdo5an.jpg

I thought it was! I heard it and wondered if you'd slotted them in there as some kind of personal in-joke, or a musical play on the fact that both songs shared the same title :D

I wanna live like C'MOWN! people (Turrican), Tuesday, 6 August 2013 23:26 (twelve years ago)

More than that, really. The sample was kind of my starting point, in that the three notes used there gave me my chord progression; which when I transposed down for the verses suggested a flamenco feel for the intro - which mostly didn't survive because I couldn't play it well enough, though there's some Spanish guitar still on there.

It was a struggle not to borrow the melody to Eurythmics' Sweet Dreams, because it turns out that's the same chord progression too - but there's a horrible cover of it that plays at my gym, and it's ruined it forever for me.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 08:40 (twelve years ago)

Tis frustrating, can't listen to any of these due to being 'away' (you late bods grrr)

But it can be a nice thing to come back to, and shall add to my nice burned cdr collection with sleeve and all that...

Mark G, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 08:47 (twelve years ago)

I've been listening to this in one ear at work (having only one earphone in is my concession to the fact that nobody else wears headphones and people might disapprove) and it all sounds rad so far, got to remember to give this a proper stereo listen this evening

nice work everyone!

slippery kelp on the tide (a passing spacecadet), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 10:39 (twelve years ago)

I think MaresNest's is inevitably emerging as my favourite (alongside PP's), and Matt M's is sneaking up very slowly and gracefully too. Finally gotten around to giving it a proper listen! Hurrah for us.

imago, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 21:15 (twelve years ago)

o and lol PP :D

imago, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 21:17 (twelve years ago)

o o and talcum mucker's is also really good; it reminds me of none other than EARL BRUTUS a bit and its author need not be so denigrating of it

imago, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 21:59 (twelve years ago)

Can't stop listening to snoball's one, it sounds like something that could have been on Mute in the VERY early '80s... like fucking Fad Gadget or something! :D

sarahell and I did a listen-thru the other week and we agreed that large parts of it were pretty good yeah. your own pitch-perfect Depeche Mode impression included (I mean, previous tracks you'd submitted to ILX comps were instrumental, which is a criminal waste of voice)

Who whom kissed? (imago), Friday, 6 June 2014 19:52 (eleven years ago)

the lyrics to my "copy of a," which i think are better than trent's ("why all the change of heart?" gtfo)

it ends today
the pain must go away
i tear the skin
just to feel the blood kick in
fuck your love
i'm going to the club
i must be moving on
time to shake my bon-bon

the drums kick in
the delicious sense of sin
the heat gets hotter
gonna drop my drawers and say "welcome back, kotter"
gettin' freaky tonight
dancin' in front of the floodlight
all the girls and all the boys
flap your arms and make some noise

we don't need a copy of a...
we don't need a copy of a...

when the kids come 'round with a brand new sound
just bob your head and give 'em a pound
it may be strange or re-arranged
but the game was made to be changed

driving home, getting dome
feelin' like the last days of rome
hey, if it all ends tomorrow
at least i didn't beg or borrow
what happens next, you send a text
and ask if i'm possibly down for sex
"what's the deal?" baby, here's the deal
you got no love, no love you'd call real

we don't need a copy of a...
we don't need a copy of a...
