The B-side of Cameron's original record was "Ah want tae be a Punk Rocker", a satire of the then-current punk rock movement written by Peter Nardini.

A song guaranteed to bring a tear to the eye to anyone who was 8 years old in 1990 (me, for example). Where to start with the borrowings? There's:

* The chorus is the Spanish football chant Olé Olé Olé
* The other chorus (btw more songs should consist entirely of choruses) is from Ally's Tartan Army as seen in the original post, which was in turn taken from an 1867 rebel song called God Save Ireland
* The riff to end all riffs is taken from Dearg Doom by The Horslips, who borrowed it from everyone's favourite blind harpist of the 17th century Turlough Carolan

Bigger influence on wee Boaby was the punk Scottish football song released by Rabbie Burns & His Ticket Touts, featuring a v drunk J Rotten on the back of the sleeve

voted for ally's army, i remember being really excited by seeing that on totp and it feels like it really galvanised support for scotland amongst me and my friends at school in north london. that chelsea song is just a pale imitation of 'nice one cyril', tottenham was boss of football tunes from that through the chas'n'dave glory years of 81/82 and on to hods and wads in 87

john wahey (NickB), Tuesday, 5 August 2014 10:58 (eleven years ago)

(The chelsea song predates "Nice one Cyril")

Not sure if Andy Cameron's song for the 1974 World Cup was better or not.

Oh right, now I see how Lydon ended up on that record cover: Jock McDonald's, the Bollock Brothers (C/D?)

Correct result. Ally's Tartan Army is a better song. Much more fun and delivered by a seasoned comic/performer. No surprises that it would win on that alone. The mention upthread of the b-side is key. Many people purchased this for I Want To Be A Punk Rocker - written by one Scottish icon and performed by another. Also check out Nardini's solo single which had a sequel song "Ma Maw's A Mod" on it's b-side. Finally, the entire Scottish 1978 world cup bid, from the qualifying rounds to the dramatic exit was a massive cultural event that overshadows pretty much any other football related event in the UK throughout the 70s. Certainly more than whatever Chelsea were doing in 1972.
