I vote Rez and company. have floor seat to see em on Halloween.

Neanderthal, Sunday, 11 August 2013 14:50 (twelve years ago)

i couldn't possibly understand how someone could like Phoenix more than NIN and yet

yung humas (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 11 August 2013 14:52 (twelve years ago)

they should have been forced to wear 'shame' signs in public after naming an album "Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix"

Is NIN supposed to be 'likable'? They aren't.

sleepingbag, Sunday, 11 August 2013 15:03 (twelve years ago)

if by that you mean "do I think I could spend a day on the Ferris Wheel with Trent?", then no.

if by that you mean "do I think their music is ace", then hell yes. Pretty Hate Machine, Broken, Fixed, Downward Spiral, and to a lesser extent, The Fragile are dope fucking albums.

I can't really listen to phoenix in doses greater than 5 seconds.

dunno what 'likable' has to do w/ it when Whiney is clearly talking about the music itself, not the people.

yung humas (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 11 August 2013 15:26 (twelve years ago)

well, if we're talking musically, i've been hearing NIN singles since elementary school and never had the slightest inclination to listen to them any more than I had to, whereas phoenix is ok i guess, so phoenix

sleepingbag, Sunday, 11 August 2013 15:31 (twelve years ago)

i almost thought this would be an alex in nyc thread except it's about how great the 90s were instead of the 80s, and it's 2013 not 2003

da croupier, Sunday, 11 August 2013 15:46 (twelve years ago)

That was an easy one: NIN.

Beatrix Kiddo (Raymond Cummings), Sunday, 11 August 2013 15:47 (twelve years ago)

this thread is just 'festivals are getting smart about counterprogramming' i guess?

some dude, Sunday, 11 August 2013 15:49 (twelve years ago)

the only time i've seen NIN live was at a festival where they were playing the same time as Kanye. i watched a few songs of Kanye (this was summer '08, when all of his songs were becoming long proto-808s brooding Vegas vamps), then went to see NIN kill it for the rest of the night.

some dude, Sunday, 11 August 2013 16:00 (twelve years ago)

obviously NIN but i'll vote phoenix just to piss off whiney

akm, Sunday, 11 August 2013 16:16 (twelve years ago)

he anticipated that move. a thousand socks, all ready to deploy at a moment's notice.

Neanderthal, Sunday, 11 August 2013 16:32 (twelve years ago)

'entertainment' has been stuck in my head since it was posted, i'm trying to think of a catchy NIN song to replace it but i'm pretty sure all the stuff i'm thinking of is actually by Korn

sleepingbag, Sunday, 11 August 2013 16:35 (twelve years ago)

i heard a Phoenix song recently that was like a decent 2nd rate Sloan song, and i was like ok, maybe these guys aren't completely worthless.

some dude, Sunday, 11 August 2013 16:40 (twelve years ago)

i've always kind of hated nin but that video whiney posted is sick... so punk

flopson, Sunday, 11 August 2013 16:43 (twelve years ago)

NIN are mostly average and Phoenix are slightly annoying. Neither is worth a vote.

OutdoorFish, Sunday, 11 August 2013 21:08 (twelve years ago)

Phoenix because they don't sound like a Wax Trax band.

I'll take the jangle-jangle over the throb-throb (brg30), Sunday, 11 August 2013 21:41 (twelve years ago)

"let's do a hipster racist version of 'Turning Japanese'"

Neanderthal, Sunday, 11 August 2013 22:49 (twelve years ago)

don't blame me, I voted for hipster racists

alpine static, Sunday, 11 August 2013 22:54 (twelve years ago)

as a whole i prefer "it's never been like that" to any NIN album, but i would never seen phoenix live over NIN live. i mean come on.

failed skirty tropes (Noodle Vague), Monday, 12 August 2013 10:50 (twelve years ago)

Phoenix's new album might hurt your ears but that's just bad mixing, not because of, like, pain and angst and shit. None of the guys have goatees or dreads. They've probably never even cut themselves. "Rock band" my ass.

Lambo Sedan (Whitey on the Moon), Thursday, 15 August 2013 04:56 (twelve years ago)

lmao

some dude, Thursday, 15 August 2013 09:22 (twelve years ago)

Pushing the boundaries of what a rock band can do, passing through some genuinely strange dark places but ending up collapsing back into a 'rock band'

vs

Being 'a rock band'

cardamon, Friday, 16 August 2013 00:15 (twelve years ago)

Consistently failing to write the scary lyrics you want to write

vs

Managing to call your album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix and succeeding at doing whatever it is that that is

cardamon, Friday, 16 August 2013 00:18 (twelve years ago)

This is like comparing Tang to New Clorox with Bleach. They're entirely different things.

Alex in NYC, Friday, 16 August 2013 19:28 (twelve years ago)

someone out there would drink both of 'em

markers, Friday, 16 August 2013 19:35 (twelve years ago)

I aint gonna front; I love "1901" but that is like one great alt-rock single versus NIN's five or six (at the very least)

mucus has a right to children (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 16 August 2013 19:40 (twelve years ago)

Consistently failing to write the scary lyrics you want to write

Do either of these bands actually have lyrics? I had no idea. I just listen to them as yammering rhythmic/musical placeholders.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 16 August 2013 19:59 (twelve years ago)

Reznor's lyrics are a big one-note but i really wouldn't go that far

some dude, Friday, 16 August 2013 20:02 (twelve years ago)

*bit

some dude, Friday, 16 August 2013 20:02 (twelve years ago)

I particularly like the lyrics to "The Great Destroyer"

OH MY GOD HE'S OOGLY (DJP), Friday, 16 August 2013 20:06 (twelve years ago)

I get the general gist of his lyrics, but darned if I'm going to pay attention for anything close to wit, humor, subtly or anything beyond that same one-note. I mean, they fit perfectly, that's for sure, but they might as well be squelching synths as little as I am emotionally invested in his yearbook margin gloom.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 16 August 2013 20:21 (twelve years ago)

They don't cohere into a narrative, or even a conceit, usually. That doesn't have to be a problem. You can have fragmented lyrics. But he isn't as good at free association as Thom Yorke, say

cardamon, Sunday, 18 August 2013 03:02 (eleven years ago)

Another way we can parse this:

The dark musical alchemist in his mysterious chamber

vs

Some guys making some tunes and having a good time! You will also have a good time! Are you having a good time yet? No? Why aren't you having a good time? etc

as then sheltered high schooler - nin to make things more dramatic/angsty
as now aged office drone - phoenix to make things more carefree/fun

i think mikey t. reznor does his best work now when he's doing tense grinding instrumentals. relieved every time he pops up and is not doing something embarrassing like al jourgensen. his career longevity is impressive.
