the only time i've seen NIN live was at a festival where they were playing the same time as Kanye. i watched a few songs of Kanye (this was summer '08, when all of his songs were becoming long proto-808s brooding Vegas vamps), then went to see NIN kill it for the rest of the night.

I get the general gist of his lyrics, but darned if I'm going to pay attention for anything close to wit, humor, subtly or anything beyond that same one-note. I mean, they fit perfectly, that's for sure, but they might as well be squelching synths as little as I am emotionally invested in his yearbook margin gloom.

They don't cohere into a narrative, or even a conceit, usually. That doesn't have to be a problem. You can have fragmented lyrics. But he isn't as good at free association as Thom Yorke, say

i think mikey t. reznor does his best work now when he's doing tense grinding instrumentals. relieved every time he pops up and is not doing something embarrassing like al jourgensen. his career longevity is impressive.
